Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

E-Trailer service is the very best. O ordered 4 tires a month ago, only got two, probably due to UPS thinking strike. Called four days ago. What usually takes a week for here on friday. Thank you again E-Trailer.
Satisfied customer again.

Excellent tire for heavy trailers wears great and excellent on wet roads

by:

I received my tires very soon after placing my order. I ordered these tires as a replacement to what came on my horse trailer. I had put two of the same tires on the trailer the year before. I liked the cost and the quality of the tire. So I decided to replace the other two tires with the same, so as to have the same tires all around on the trailer. I bought them with the mindset to keep everything alike. I am more at ease when pulling the trailer knowing that I have maintained my trailer as well as keeping good tires on it as well. Too many times have I seen people on the side of the road with a blown out tire on a trailer. No problem right? I've even seen trailers unhooked sitting on the side of the road, what would I do with three horses if it were me? Certainly not leave them on the side of the road. I prefer to prevent an emergency then to cause one. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you. These tires and E-Trailer have allowed me to do so in an affordable manner. Thanks for checking in on me!

too early to give an excellent rating

by:

Still looking great. Went to Alaska and back as spair tires. Just getting ready to put
them on the trailer. I have purchased the other two so now the test begins. I ran the last pair 30+ thousand miles and still look good but time to change. Have great load capacity for my big 5th wheel. Thanks

by:

You did a great job

  • Recommended 235/85R16 Trailer Tires for 2011 Blue Ridge 3525 5th Wheel Trailer
For your 2011 Blue Ridge 3525 5th wheel, I recommend the Goodyear Endurance ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # 724860519 as your tire replacements. These tires are rated for 3,640 lbs at 80 psi. They are constructed with triple polyester plies and double steel belts for increased durability and endurance. They are also rated for speeds up to 87 mph and come with limited warranty that includes tire replacement. I've attached a video to assist further.

  • Tire Choice for 18K-Gross Weight 5th Wheel Toy Hauler that Has Frequent Blowouts
The most common causes for a tire blowout on a heavy trailer are incorrect inflation (too low or too high), overloading beyond rated capacity, running them at too high a speed or a problem with the trailer suspension or hubs that causes the tires to run out of proper alignment. This can place more stress on a small portion of the tire and lead to failure. If tires on all axles are failing then this last possibility is unlikely. It is always best to use the same trailer tire all around....

  • Replacement 235/80-16 Tires on a 2013 Big Horn 5th Wheel Trailer with Frequent Blow Outs
What seems to happen is if the 5th wheel trailer is towed nose up in the front, more weight is put on the tires. Since the axles are rated for a total of 12,000 pounds, that is under the gross vehicle rating of 14,000 pounds. So if there isn't at least 2,000 pounds pin weight at the front the trailer tires will be overloaded, get hot, and that is what is leading to the failure. Also, make sure the tires are always inflated to the maximum psi indicated on the tire. Trailer tires have a...

  • Is There Reason to Upgrade from Tire Size 235/80-16 to 235/85-16 on Trailer
The larger size of 235/85-16 will have a bit higher capacities typically and a very slightly larger size than the size you currently have of 235/80-16. If you need to replace all the tires you want to go with the part # AM10295 that you referenced which has a capacity of 3,640 lbs at 95 psi. But if your current size is working well for you there would really be no compelling reason to upgrade. We even have a higher weight rated tire in the smaller size as part # PRG80235 which has a capacity...

  • Highest Capacity ST235/85-16 Trailer Tire Available
The highest rated tire we have for size ST235/85-16 is an F load range, # AM10501. It has a ply rating of 12 and is rated for 3,960 pounds at 110 psi. This is the highest capacity trailer tire that we carry. Kenda does not have a load range G tire in this size. The Kenda/Karrier trailer tires are good tires and can stand toe to toe with any brand of trailer tire out there. They are comparable to other leading tire brands including Load Boss.

  • Can a Boat Trailer Use a Mix of Bias Ply and Radial Tires
You will need to keep the tire type the same for all wheels on a trailer. The reason for this is that bias ply and radial tires do not track the same so you would end up with uneven tire wear and it can also lead to suspension issues in more extreme cases. And radial tires run cooler than bias ply so using the two together could cause issues leading to overheating the one side. In the short term, like if you had a flat on the trailer and only had the opposite tire style, you would be fine...

  • Are There Benefits To Using a 17 Inch Wheel on a Trailer Over a 16 Inch Wheel
There is not a really a benefit to increasing from a 16 inch wheel to a 17 inch wheel. If you want to go with a larger wheel on your trailer, you first will want to make sure that there is room to accommodate the larger wheel. Most trailers are not designed to accommodate wheels larger than 16 inches. Additionally, if you go with a 17 inch wheel for your trailer, you may find that tires are more expensive and harder to come by than tires for 16 inch wheels. If you are wanting a tire...

  • Can ST235/80R16 Tires Replace ST235/85R16 Tires on 5th Wheel Trailer?
The Provider ST235/80R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # TTWTRTM2358016E have a 30.79 inch outer diameter with a section width of 9.25 inches. The Kenda Karrier ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire - Load Range E # AM10295 like what you have is a little larger at 31.61 inches diameter and 9.37 inches wide. I recommend using the same size tires that you currently have on your trailer to avoid any issues. This tires are rated for a higher capacity and you do want all your tires to match...

  • Bet Trailer Tire in Size LT235/85R16
At 6 years you would want to replace your trailer tires as that is the max age we recommend for tires even if they are still in good shape. In your tire size of 235/85R16 I would recommend you go with a # TTWPRG235R16 as this is a Load Range G, but what I really like about the radial Taskmaster tires like this is that they are rated for higher speeds. Most trailer tires are only rated for 65 miles per hour which most end up exceeding and these are rated for 81 mph.

  • Do Trailer Tires Need To Be Balanced?
You are correct. Tires on cars and trucks are balanced to even out the high and low spots, which inevitably show up during the manufacturing process, to smooth out the ride for the passengers. As there are no passengers in a trailer/camper (or at least there shouldn't be), this is not an issue and you do not need to spend the money to get them balanced. Especially since I have heard the weights tend to fly off trailer wheels. However, some people do still want their trailer tires balanced...

  • Trailer Tires and Wheels for a 6,700 Pound Trailer
To reach a capacity of 6,700 pounds you would need to go with a 16x6.5 Aluminum wheel like # AM22658HWTB. This wheel has a capacity of 3,580 pounds. You will need to have trailer wheels and tires that meet or exceed the gross trailer weight. The system can only carry as much weight as the lowest rated component. You could then add tire # AM10295 which is rated for 3,640 pounds at 95 psi. I have included a link to our trailer tire FAQ article for you. If the trailer has 2 axles for a total...

  • Valve Stems for Trailer Tires and Wheels Rated for 110 PSI on a 5th Wheel Trailer
Usually valve stems that are rated for 110 psi will be metal such as # AM20906. The valve stems usually match the tire capacity. The safe bet would be to use new valve stems so you can be sure. It is not a big expense and it will give you piece of mind.

  • Does Climate/Temperature Effect a Trailer Tires Maximum psi
Trailer tires should always be inflated to their maximum air pressure. As you noted, the sidewall of the # AM10295 tire that you purchased lists the tire's max as 95psi, and you will want to inflate the tire to 95 psi. The rule of thumb on tire pressure change due to air temperature is 1 psi for every 10 degrees (Fahrenheit) in temperature change. In the desert regions I would think 50 to 60 degrees (Fahrenheit) would be an average temperature change from day and night, meaning a psi...

If this would work for you, I'd recommend a Lionshead Castle Rock 185/80-13 Load Range D Radial Tire, part # LHCK105. Lionshead tires include complimentary roadside assistance for 2 years. • Can ST Tires be Used in Place of LT Tires on a 2000 Fleetwood 5th Wheel Trailer
Kenda, Karrier, Loadstar are all from Americana tire and wheel. Both an LT 235/60-16 and ST235/80-16 tire will have the same width, 9-1/4 inches so clearance between the tire and springs is not going to be a concern. But the ST235/80-16 is going to be about 3.7 inches taller. You will need to have over 1.85 inches of clearance above the existing tires to go to the ST235/80-16, # AM10248. And on a tandem axle trailer, the larger tire diameter will also means the tires on the front and...

  • Recommended 235/85-16 Tires for Horse Trailer
Let's begin with possible reasons for the blowouts you've experienced. The number one nemesis of trailer tires or any tire for that matter is excessive heat build up. Overloading, under inflating and exceeding the speed rating of a tire will all cause heat to built up and contribute to its early demise. Also, worn or damaged suspension or axle components can also cause premature wear. Make a practice of examining the wear pattern on your tires. The wear should be uniform, if it's not...

  • What is Correct Tire Pressure for Trailer Tires
That really depends on the tire. What you need to do is check the sidewall for the max PSI rating. With trailer tires you want to run them at the max pressure all the time so that you ensure you get the full capacity as well as prevent heat build up. It's not like passenger vehicles where you inflate the tire below the max rating. I attached a FAQ article on trailer tires for you to check out as well.

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation with Capacity Over 4,425 lbs
For a tandem axle trailer that weighs 17,700 lbs you'd need an individual tire capacity of 4,425 lbs. The closest tire we have to that in your size of 235/85R16 is going to be the Provider ST235/85R16 Radial Trailer Tire # TTWPRG235R16 which has a capacity of 4,400 lbs which is close but you'd be 100 lbs under capacity with these. Most tires in this size have a much lower capacity so I would not be shocked if the reason your current tires are junk is that you are overloading them. The...

I wouldn't recommend subtracting the pin weight of the trailer from the total weight to get what you would need as the tire capacity. Instead you would want to use the entire weight of the trailer divided by the amount of tires the trailer has to determine what each tire capacity you would need. Since you referenced a ST235/85R16 tire I would instead recommend the Taskmaster Tire part # TTWPRG235R16. This has the needed capacity as it has a 4,400 lb capacity at 110 psi and then also has...

You could potentially go to a larger tire/wheel combo as long as there is space all around the existing tires for the larger size. I would need to know the tire size you are using now to determine the next step up and the differences in sizes. Trailer tires fail because of heat and/or overloading usually.
