Replacement Wheels for 4-Star LQ Horse Trailer With 235/85-16 Tires

Question:

I am looking for new rims for my 4 STAR LQ horse trailer. The Tires are 235 85 16 rims are 8 lug. I can haul up to 2 horses, so about 2200#. I currently have chrome simulator hub caps that ate just annoying and I would like to have a chrome type rim that would look good on the trailer. No painted steel. My questionis - what else do I need to know to replace these rims appropriately? width of rim? acceptable hauling weight of rim? Please educate me on this and offer your advice. Thank you.

Rim width isn't likely a concern since most 235/85-16 tires will fit a variety of trailer wheel widths. For example, the # AM10295 fits 16" x 6", 16" x 6-1/2", 16" x 7", and 16" x 7-1/2" rims. The GVWR of the trailer is nice to know so you can make sure the wheel capacity is enough to handle the trailer and whatever it is carrying.

We have a few different wheels that could work for your application. If you aren't against powder coat you could use the Dexstar Steel Mini Mod Trailer Wheel # AM20794. This steel wheel has a capacity of 3,960 lbs. To be clear, wheel capacity is per wheel so if you had two of these it would be 7,920 lbs.

If powder coat falls under your desire to avoid paint then I recommend the Aluminum Modular Trailer Wheel # LHJM513. These have an aluminum construction so they carry a higher price but you won't have to worry about the coating getting scratched off or corrosion. They're technically silver but fairly polished which is close to chrome and would look good on any trailer. They also have a 3,750 lb capacity. If you want a nice finished look you can add the Lionshead Trailer Wheel Center Cap # LHCS109-SI60C as well.
