Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Ordered 14 inch rims and tires for my 2007 Jayco travel trailer. Easy ordering, prompt delivery, easy to install, very satisfied with every aspect of etrailer!!!

Were your original rims 13 inch? I have 13 inch rims with ST18580D13 bias ply load range D tires on my Jayco Jayfeather Ultralite 228 trailer and am looking to switch to radials in load range D... These are about as close to the original tire size as I can find. If you did up-size from smaller rims and tires, how is it working out for you?

Jim Y.

Ernest,Yes I had 13 18580D13s as standard equipment. Put on Hankook 195 75R14 8 ply load range D 2094 lbs at 65psi. Tires fit fine. There is hardly any difference in the width and height increased maybe 1 inch. I have taken the trailer on logging roads with pot holesbad washboard without any issues. With the 13 inch tires on i had 2 clearance on each side and about 7-8 from the top of tire to the wheel well Jayco will not give you any help and Dexter, axle manufacture, sent information but to check the clearances out required a lift which i did not have. Common sense dictated the 14 tires would work and they do. Hope this helps just check the side wall and top clearances.Hope this helpsclearances

purchased 2 Kenda trailer tires, date on tires were 2 months less than 3 years old. I HAVE BEEN PURCHASING TIRES, WHEELS AND OTHER ITEMS FROM E-TRAILER FOR MORE THAN 12YEARS.NEEDLESS TO SAY THE TIRES WERE SHIPPED BACK.As AN e-trailer customer, not at all happy with this purchase.

by:

Trailer camping is seasonal here in Colorado, so it took me a while to get the tires mounted and put to use. Now that they are on the road, I'm very pleased with them and feel much safer traveling on good rubber!

by:

Order arrived earlier than expected. Order processes was extremely easy. Exactly what we wanted. Will be ordering all our trailer tires from them from here on our.

by:

The tires are perfect, just what I needed. The Redarc break controller was easy to install with the plug and play wire harness for my 2013 Tacoma and it works great. Shipping was fast and reliable.

For the packaging the tires each had there strong cardboard box however, the Redarc break controller box was put in with one of the tire boxes and definitely took a light beating and almost fell out of its package. It still works fine and I’m happy to have it but etrailer I don’t think that’s a great idea to just put in with the tire box not protected. It could crack the plastic casing of the break controller housing and mess up its calibration . It makes sense for shipping to put with the tire but at least should give it some protection from the tire.

Thanks!

Ordering through Etrailer was easy. I was struggling to find the tire for my trailer and they made it easy.

by:

So I ordered these tires on the 19th and arrived on the 21st. Fast shipping. I havent installed them yet. But will soon. Overall impressions of this tire is very good so far. Came shipped in individual boxes. Will rereview after i get them installed and have a few miles on them.

So far these tires have exceeded my expectations. The wear is minimal and tracks good. No problems.2.5k miles.

by:

I can't say anything about it, as it was bought to replace a 10 yr old, rotted spare tire on my travel trailer. It balanced out good and still holds air, but has never been on the ground.

by:

Bought 2 of these tires in 2015, just bought another to replace one that had serious blowout at 60 mph after 16,000 miles. Fortunately no damage from the blowout. Very happy with the tires up until then and not sure of cause of the blowout. It was the tire on the passenger side so maybe picked up something on roadside, rumble strips or hitting a curb. I still like the higher air pressure and load capacity so that's why I got another one. I use these on a single axle light weight travel trailer. I'm including pics of damaged tire and comparison of new and used (~20,000 mi.) I think the wear rate is good for a trailer.

by:

Perfect match to what I had originally. Got it mounted this morning and back on the trailer. Ready for the next adventure.
Thanks again etrailer.com. And a shout out to Justin for being helpful on all my orders. etrailer.com is my go-to for all of my trailer needs.

by:

We've ordered these tires multiple times for a number of different trailers, they last a long time, durable and great prices.

by:

I ordered these tires for my rv trailer because my old tires were 7 years old and I had a blowout on one of them. The tires I received are already 2 years old according to the build dates on them. That doesn’t make me happy. I know you say they are kept in a climate controlled warehouse and all that , but who really knows. If I need more tires in the future I’ll look somewhere else.

by:

If you need anything, eTrailer is the place!!!

I have ordered multiple items over the years and have always received excellent customer service, great products, and quick shipping.

The most recent order was the Karrier "D" rated tire, which I have ordered 4 others of the same from eTrailer. This is one of the best trailer tires I have used in over 30 years of boating, and one of the few "D" rated 14" tires that meet my load requirements.

These things ride amazing, no flat spots from sitting in the off-season, traction and wear is excellent. I don't see how you could get a better tire or at this price anywhere.

by:

Awesome as always. Item arrived as stat ed.

by:

Delivered sooner than promised! Have made one long 1800 mile road trip with rain and bad roads. Tires performed great. Trailer tracks well. Sat in storage for 4 winter months with no loss of tire pressure. Very satisfied so far.

by:

So far I am pleased with my purchase the only problem is the steel valve stem washer does not fit these wheels and the washer needed is a very special size that is not easy to find. I ended up having to mount them with standard stems.

by:

Quality was what I expected and delivery was even better than expected. I mounted the tire myself and everything worked great. The only issue I have is with the cost of the tire, but what do you do about this crazy inflation? I could not expect anything more from etrailer and will definitely buy from them again!

by:

Working great. The piece of mind provided by properly rated, balanced tires on my single axle trailer is phenomenal.

by:

This is my 3rd or 4th transaction with etrailer and each one has been great! Fast shipping and quality products. They will continue to be the first place I look when I need anything for our camper or my truck! The Kendra tires look great. Will update after a summer to see how they pull.

One year in and going strong. No issues at all after several long trips. The tires barely show wear and we are very happy with the purchase!

by:

Fast shipping, good to go.

by:

After checking all tire dealers in Tucson for a trailer tire with a load rating of 2200 lbs I found these at Etrailer! My trailer already has these and I needed a new set. Great tires..

by:

I bought two tires for my pontoon boat it had one axle under it tires are awesome and now I'm in the process of putting a second axle under the boat so I ordered two more tires for the new axle, old ones holding up great. Better pic later

by:

These tires were just what we needed. Long life and higher speed rating. After a couple of trips with our 16' Forest River Wolf Pup these tires have held up beautifully. Running these at 70 mph is no problem with the speed rating.
etrailer always has the best price and plenty of helpful information.

  • Availability of Replacement Tire For Size F65-14ST on Tow Master Boat Trailer
The replacement for the F65-14ST tire you mentioned would be a ST205/65-14, which is kind of an oddball size that we don't carry. The closest equivalent we carry would be 205/75-14. The tire you currently have is 24.6 inches in diameter, and 7.4 inch section width. The ST205/75-14 is 26.3 inches in diameter and 7.8 inches wide which is about a 1/2 inch wider and 1.7 inches larger in diameter. We have the 205/75-14 available in a bias-ply or a radial tire. The radial is available in a...

  • Choosing the Correct Travel Trailer Tires
The trailer you are using will not be a determining factor in the tires you select. In order to choose the proper tires, you will need to know your wheel diameter, wheel width, and the weight load you'll be carrying. For example, the Kenda # AM10235 is a 205/75R14 tire with a maximum weight capacity of 2,040 lbs at 65 psi and it fits wheels with a 14" diameter and width between 5" and 6-1/2". The best wheel and tire in the size you have of ST205/75-14 (F78-14ST) would be the Kenda Karrier tire part # AM10235 and then have that mounted on the Dexstar # AM20352. This is a great tire and wheel pairing. The tire is a load D with a 2,200 lb max capacity at 75 psi and a speed rating of 81 mph. It comes with complimentary roadside assistance and a 5 year warranty. The wheel has a 2-year warranty and is made in the USA.

Your F78-14 size tires are the same size as the current 205/75-14 tire size so that's what you'll want to replace them with. • How Much Air Pressure Should be Put in a Boat Trailer Tire
Trailer tires should always be inflated to the maximum psi as indicated on the tire regardless of the load on the trailer. The reason for this is because of how trailer tires are constructed. Trailer tires are made with a thicker sidewall than passenger vehicle tires to handle more vertical load. If they are under inflated, the thicker sidewall will then generate excessive heat and cause the tire to fail. I have included a link to our help article on trailer tires for you.

  • Is the PSI Rating of a Trailer Wheel on the Wheel Somewhere
It is possible that the wheel will have its psi rating stamped into the back. I can also make a fairly accurate determination based on the diameter, bolt pattern, and width of the wheel. On a 14 inch will though the load range D tires are rated up to 65 psi which means that any of the 14 inch wheels should be able to handle that pressure without a problem.

At this time we don't offer a 14 inch load range D trailer tire and wheel combination. We do have one 14 inch load range D tire # AM10235 but would need the bolt pattern of your existing wheel. The reason we need the bolt pattern is the bolt pattern of a wheel tells us the number of lugs (or bolt holes) and the diameter of the circle the lugs sit on. Also any tire shop can mount the tire on the wheel for a nominal fee. I have included a link to a help article that explains how to determine...

An ST205/75R14 tire like the # AM10235 has an outer diameter of 26.3" with an 8.1" section width. The Karrier ST225/75R15 Radial Trailer Tire # AM10256 has an outer diameter of 28.4" with an 8.9" section width.
