Note: Because free-backing brakes are designed to eliminate nearly all friction between the brake shoes and the drum when you are driving in reverse, a trailer breakaway kit will not be effective should your trailer disconnect from your tow vehicle while you are backing up.

Free-Backing Brake Assembly

Free-backing brakes let your trailer move in reverse without the brakes being activated by your surge actuator. These brakes are needed if your actuator does not have a reverse lockout, which is a mechanism that ensures that the actuator does not activate when your rig moves in reverse.

This free-backing hydraulic brake assembly has a fall-away shoe, which provides full braking when your trailer is moving forward, but supplies only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. During normal forward braking, the fall-away shoe expands to catch your brake drum. When driving in reverse, however, the fall-away shoe's extra spring will overcome the pressure from the brake cylinder. This keeps the leading edge from catching on the drum, so the shoe will not fully pivot into the drum. This exerts a smaller amount of friction, just enough to provide a minimal amount of braking when in reverse.

This trailer brake assembly acts as part of your trailer's hydraulic braking system. A hydraulic trailer brake actuator is required for this brake to function.

Thoroughly Tested for Safety

This brake assembly meets the requirements for certification by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). The CSA creates standards, which when complied with ensure a safe and quality product. This brake assembly underwent extensive testing to measure stopping distances when braking. This brake has also been tested by QAI for braking performance in a complete automotive setup and under real-world conditions to provide the most realistic scenario for the everyday driver.

Automotive-Grade Friction Material

Each shoe on this brake assembly is lined with automotive-grade friction material for improved stopping performance and longevity. The friction material is fully bonded onto the surface of the brake shoe. This lining is custom-molded for a perfect fit. The edges are tapered to ensure long-lasting performance. This taper, along with the circular grinding that the lining undergoes, helps to prevent cracking and crumbling. This durability helps to prevent mechanical lockup, which can occur when brake shoes are excessively worn or broken.

The friction material is also SAE-N certified, which means that it is an environmentally safe product that complies with California and Washington regulations regarding the composition of brake pads. As a result, this material not only provides high-performance braking that can endure the test of time, but it is also environmentally friendly and safe for use throughout the United States and Canada.

Video Transcript for etrailer Trailer Brakes AKFBBRK-7R-D Review

Today, we're going to look at the 12 inch by 2 inch Uni-Servo free-backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly with the Dacromet finish for 5,200 pound up to 7,000 pound axles. This is the right-hand passenger side assembly. Now, this hydraulic drum brake assembly is Uni-Servo and a free-backing design. They're used on trailers with search type brake actuators that have no reverse lock-out. This one also has the nice Dacromet coating over the whole assembly, which is used in ring applications because it provides superior corrosion resistance for fresh water or salt water use. Now the Uni-Servo design is the single plunger design here on the cylinder. The free-backing design ...

You can tell by the shoe. This fall away shoe has sort of a D shape to it. This free-backing design will let you back up without engaging the trailer brake, even if the actuator is activated. The fall-away shoe, which is the D design right here .. This will provide full braking when your trailer's moving forward, but it supplies only limited friction when the trailer is moving in reverse. The size on this assembly is 12 inch by 2 inch.

It's the passenger side brake assembly. The size . Where they get that from is the 12 inch would be the diameter from this pad all the way over to this pad. So, 12 inch diameter that way and 2 inch width on the pad. That'll give you the 12 by 2.

Just to show you, we put the ruler on it, there's your twelve inch. Then, there's your 2 inch. So, 12 by 2. Again, this is the right-hand passenger side. Now, to determine what side your brake assembly goes on .. Of course when you get a new one, it'll have a sticker that'll say "right-hand" or "left-hand." But if you have an assembly that did not have a sticker or any markings, the best way to tell is to just look at the pad on the shoe. If you see this pad, it goes from here to here.

You look at this one it goes all the way from here all the way down to here, so the longer pad. This is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe. That will always face the front of the trailer. If that's the case, you see when it's like this, that would be the right-hand or passenger side assembly. Just by looking at the size of the pad on the brake shoe will determine what side the brake assembly is for. Now, these brake shoes are lined with a nice automotive-grade friction material. This friction material is fully bonded. It's not riveted to the shoes, so it gives you a lot longer life and more braking torque. The lining also does a tapered edge on each end. Nice thing about that is some brake assemblies just cut them off straight and have a 90 degree edge here. They actually level it or taper it, then they do a circular grinding to the pad to help prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to mechanical lock-up. This is a manual adjusted brake, so it does require periodic manual adjustment. It does adjust right here using this adjustment gear. Now this one uses a fine-tooth adjustment gear. It allows for more precise setting when you're adjusting it. There's no break-in period that's needed following your initial adjustment. When you go to adjust them, you just go to the back. You'll see the hole down here. Pop out this plug. You can put your tool through there to adjust your gear. The nice thing, again, with this one is they include these plastic adjuster plugs that you pop it out to get to it. When you're done, put the plug back in because you don't want dirt to get into your brake assembly. Some brake assemblies will just leave that hole open. They won't include those plugs. You do really want to have a plug in there to protect your braking system, so they'd include the adjuster plug with theirs. If you notice it has the 5 holes, so it fits the 5 brake mounting flange. Now, the mounting bolts, nuts, and lock washers that are needed to attach to the flange, we do sell those separately. This assembly is certified by USSA standards and CSA, which are the Canadian standards. The dimensions, again, are 12 inch diameter, 2 inches wide on the pad. Fits 5,200 pound up to 7,000 pound axles. It is designed to be used with 12 inch brake drums. That would do it for the review of the 12 inch by 2 inch Uni-Servo free-backing hydraulic trailer brake assembly with the Dacromet finish for 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound axles and this is for the right-hand passenger side.

Very easy direct replacement, more affordable to buy complete brake assemblies than individual components. A real time saver.

These make the work of changing trailer brakes mind-numbingly easy. Definitely worth buying this unit versus messing with spring kits etc. They adjust easily as well, as long as you have the appropriate tool to do so.

The products I bought from you over a year ago are still working flawlessly. I havent had any issues whatsoever. Thanks for following up and next time I shop for trailer parts I will be using etrailer, you guys have great customer service. I always recommend you to anyone I know whos looking for trailer parts. Thanks again

I purchased two of these for my 1993 boat trailer. It was cheaper and easier to buy these than to buy the parts and rebuild the old ones. The parts were high quality and easy to install.

The items mentioned are still working well. I have been so pleased with my etrailer purchases that we bought 4 new tires and rims from you this spring. Paid less for 4 tires and rims than the local dealer wanted for two tires, no rims.

Placed order on a Sunday. Parts were in stock but shipped on a Thursday. If you batch and queue shipments you should say that in your shipping information. Also, the packaging was completely unacceptable. Both parts stacked in a box with nothing to keep them from banging against each other. Upper brake assys had chipped brake lining. The other, missing bleeder cap.

Brake shipped the next day and received 3 days later. Went on easily, reinstalled the hub and bearings, but can't get the brakes to adjust using the star on the bottom. Of course no instructions came with the brake and no instructions on which way to turn the star. So here I am all put back together and can't get it adjusted!
Now I have to take it all apart again, wait on parts and miss another weekend of boating! So as far as I'm concerned this thing is Chinese garbage! I've done this before and never had such troubles!!!!

The Hydraulic Brake - Uni-Servo - Free Backing - Dacromet - 12" Left # AKFBBRK-7L-D and Right # AKFBBRK-7R-D you were looking at do not include the drum. To mount these brakes to your trailer you will also need Mounting Hardware # BRKH12 These brakes require a 12"x2" hub, but to determine the correct hub for your trailer you will need to know which inner and outer bearings your spindles use, and the bolt pattern of your current hubs. The easiest way to accomplish this is by removing one...

  • How Do I Know If I Have Free-Backing Brakes?
Your trailer must have free backing brakes if you have never used the surge brake actuating coupler reverse lockout. If you did not have free backing brakes, your brakes would most likely brake even if they didn't lock up when you back up because of the trailer weight pushing against the hitch ball. The only way to know for sure is to pull your hub/drum off the spindle and look at the hydraulic cylinder. Free-backing brakes like # AKFBBRK-7R-D will have only one pin coming out and it...
