Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

2014 BMW X5

Bought the 75600 Draw tight hitch for my 2014 BMW X5. Installed the wiring harness two week ago. The hitch install took about three hours total. Watched the install video. Make sure you take pictures as you go just in case you don't remember exactly how it goes back together. I was not able to remove the bumper completely away from the car. I was not able to remove the sensor plug and did not want to break it. I still was able still install the hitch. I did not have to trim the fascia it fit perfectly. The rubber protective covers that go over the top bolts need to be trimmed about 1/4" shorter so they stay on the bolts. Great product and install was easy.

Smooth install!
2008 BMW X5
Only
one minor change in the instructions, the bumper fascia trimming needed to be about 3" deep instead of the 2 inches indicated in the included instructions. I should however mention the my X5 has the M package which has a slightly different rear bumper fascia and the extra trimming may be unique to the M but I'm not sure. see pictures looking up at the hitch that show the required trimming. The trimming is not visible unless you look at it from a vantage point that is below the level of the bumper. I am very happy with the look and ease of install.

Yes, Im still happy with my purchase. No issues whatsoever.

Searched for a hitch that did not require a visible section of the bumper fascia to be cut out of the X5. This hitch did not and tucks neatly under the fascia. You rated the installation difficulty 9/10, and I believe this was accurate. Fit and finish was great. Not a fan of having the connection to the trailer a long cord that hangs out the tail gate when in use. I routed the wire down to the hitch before re-installing the bumper fascia and attached it with a bracket. Installation and wiring videos are excellent and key to the success for the DIY individual. Upon ordering, etrailier reported the hitch was in stock, but this turned out to not be the case. Etrailer customer service were great at keeping me informed and minimized the delay. Well done!

I am curious...You mentioned not having to cut the fascia but the instructions state that it needs to be cut. Can you help me understand if the instructions are wrong or if different year or trim of the car makes a difference? Thanks

Patrick B.

1/23/2014

The visible section of the bumper fascia does not need to be trimmed, which is what Greg mentioned in his review. There is an under-fascia that is below the bumper and not really visible when standing. It is attached to the bumper cover, but is a separate piece that is not the same color as the rest of the body. This piece will need to be trimmed. You can see the procedure starting at about the 4:50 mark in the video.

by:

Installed it myself. Took about 3 hours. Video instructions were great. No cutting of the bumper for my 2014 X5, and only thing that didn't match my experience was that the rear reflectors don't come out they way the say in the video. Otherwise the unit tucks up under the bumper cover real nicely.

Ive been using the hitch with a Thule hitch rack for the last year. The hitch is still rock solid, and looks like new. Its been a great investment.

Straight forward install. Strong product. Suited for do it yourself-er with a modicum of tools and ability. Holds motorcycle rack with m/c (500lbs total) well at highway speed.

If your contemplating on which hitch to get, The Draw-Tite, Reece and Hidden Hitch are identical. Mine actually had a sticker with both names on it. Like others have said, the powder coat chips easily, mine had minor chips from shipping. This didn't bother me, before I installed it, I coated the entire hitch with 1 Qt. Herculiner Bed Liner. If your worried about long term use and rust, coat it with a rubber compound. Installation took 1/2 day. Hardest part was removing and re-installing the fascia (plastic bumper). I had to trim a 2"x8" of the lower fascia. Hitch looks nice on my 2011 BMW X5 35d and 1/4 the cost of the dealership. Works with rear sensors and the screw in attachments are still available.

by:

I received one initially. I removed the bumper cover and found out that hitch didn't fit After a quick call, Hally C realized that one was for newer BMW X5. I told her the year of my BMW and she was able to ship me a new one.

The installation was quick after I received the correct part. There were a few minor things to adjust before installation.
1) cut out a notch at the bottom of the plastic cover
2) Relocate the electric connector.

I also got full refund of the wrong one I shipped it back to etrailer.
It took about 10 days.

Installed on 2017 X5 i35 MSport package. Arrived faster than expected, and in perfect condition. Printed and video instructions are outstanding. Completely installation in 2.5 hour. Purchased the tools I need with the savings - a bonus for sure. Picked up a nice torque wrench for $50, a plastic rivet gun and rivet puller for $35, Bmw OEM plastic rivets; 10 for $8 (totally not needed, the hitch comes with good plastic rivets). Take your time, watch the video a few times , use the right tools, and you won’t have an issue. I did not have cut the bumper at all. The fit is perfect and the bumper does not come in contact with the hitch at all. As well, the video is spot on. My only real tip is to go slowly. Be super careful with the bumper sensor connector. I accidentally broke one of the tabs. It absolutely had no impact on reconnecting it. Other than that, have an extra set of hands ready for the pulling and refitting of bumper. etrailer has put a lot of thought in to making the process as easy as possible. Best of luck - you can do this.

2013 BMW X5

Etrailer is the best. Here are some detailed notes from my install on my 2013 BMW x5, non M package.
- The wheel flanges come off easily, but you will likely snap the white plastic rivets. Have 2-3 in reserve.
- Torque spec is 65ft-lb
- Removal of plastic outer fascia is not easy. You have pull hard but slowly pry the panel off. You will likely break some of plastic connectors.
- Like another review said the plastic bolt covers will be too long. I used my angle grinder with a sander flap wheel to grind off 1/4" of material. I then squirted some silicone adhesive in each cap and shoved them back on each bolt. - Finally, trim that bumper cover 8.25" wide by 2.75" to get a good tight fit around the hitch assembly.

by:

One year later this hitch has been rock solid and crossed half the country. Follow the super detailed instructions and you’ll have no issues installing this hitch.

2007 BMW X5

Easy to install, bolted right on (after the bumper was removed, which was pretty easy too!). Also on some other brands of hitches for the 2007 BMW X5 it would make the tow screws unavailable, but this hitch leaves them available and not blocked! Also the best part is that the bumper face did not need to be cut which is better than even the OEM one from BMW! (you do need to cut a small part off but that is facing the ground so you dont even see it!).

Mine is an BMW X5 2007 one hitch I looked at had to drill one hole in center of sub frame

Patrick B.

3/3/2015

All of the hitches we carry for the 2007 BMW X5 do no require drilling additional holes into the vehicle, but the may require some fascia or panel trimming.

Great hitch. Just like it was represented. I use it mostly for my ebikes but also to pull trailers

Love this hitch. Awesome instructions to install on our X5. The most time consuming event was simply unclipping the rear reflectors to get to the mounting screws. You don’t want to snap/break them. They took some finessing to pop off.

2016 BMW X5

Total experience with the product was excellent. I have a 2016 BMW X5 50i with “M” trim. I received the hitch in a couple of days. I have a friend in the Auto Body business that installed for me. Cost me $100 and a couple of beers. He followed written instructions and watched your 10-minute video. He said there were minor differences but nothing that caused a problem. My rear bumper did NOT have to be cut. There is 1/4” clearance between top of hitch and bottom of bumper. Everything about this experience has been excellent. I plan to use a Thule 4-bike rack with the hitch. Thank you!

2013 BMW X5

I am mechanically inclined (thanks dad!) and so after finding out that my local Uhaul would charge $225 to install a hitch not purchased from them, decided to just do it myself as I had originally planned when I bought this hitch from eTrailer.com.

The most cringe-worthy part of this installation is that feeling of ripping the side of the rear bumper cover of your beautiful late model X5 apart and hearing those nasty popping sounds as evidenced in the video. Lest you feel you need to spend $150-$225 to have someone else install this hitch, I will attest to the fact that it is not that bad at all. If you change your own oil, rotate your own tires, or don't ever have to pause and recite "lefty loosey, righty tighty" then you're a great candidate to perform your own installation!

The video was key to making this an easy installation. I put my laptop on a bench next to my car while I played/paused each step and simply followed along. The toughest part of the installation was unclipping the rear bumper sensor wiring harness. It just did not want to release. That took me a good 25 mins.

This installation is definitely a two person job. I would never attempt this without a good helper with steady hands. A second person is definitely needed when realigning the rear bumper tabs with the rear bumper mounts and side mounts when buttoning everything back up.

I had to cut out a little extra space in the lower rear bumper fascia to get everything to sit right. I have the X5 50i with M Sport Pkg, so the rear bumper has additional design features that I do not believe are shared with the other trim levels. Three test fits and it was good to go.

The only thing I did not like about this kit was the supplied plastic rivets. The instructions call for a 5/32" rivet tool, which I have. The plastic rivets do not fit into the rivet tool. Not only that, but they did not actually fasten at all. I have to goto BMW tomorrow to buy OEM ones. Minor flaw, and I believe I read the other reviews with similar findings. No biggie, but it would be nice to have better quality rivets.

I am very satisfied with this hitch and the installation instructions. Here are some pics of my bike rack installed in the hitch on my 2013 X5 50i M Sport. :)

I installed a Draw-tite hitch form etrailer.com on my BMW X5 and the whole process went very smoothly. The instructional video they provide is spot on and covered every detail and actually showed the install on my model of car, a day after the install I towed a U-Haul trailer home from out of state with zero problems. The hitch is used regularly for my bike carrier and does a great job. I was totally impressed.

by:
2015 BMW X5

The receiver is exactly as described on the website. I completed the installation by myself in just over 3 hours. The video was the best part. Without the video (I actually referred to the videos for several model years), I would never have figured out the correct sequence to remove the rear valance. The video made the process easy to follow and included several helpful tips. The replacement pop rivets purchased from BMW (5mm shank) are bigger that a standard 3/16 inch rivet gun will accept. The best part of the installation was that no cutting was required. The rear valance on my 2015 X5 was already cut perfectly to accept the Draw-Tite receiver. It provides what looks like a factory installation. The receiver enables the use of a rear-mounted rather than a roof-top bike rack. Just what I was looking for.

2017 BMW X5

Installed on 2017 X5 i35 MSport package. Although the listing states "excluding M performance models" by the manufacturer, it fit perfectly! I had my laptop in my garage and was following the instruction video as I was going through the process. I read other reviews and gave myself plenty of time to not rush and break anything. I bought a set of plastic pry tools for $8 to not scratch the plastic parts on removal. It took my about 3 hours which includes a trip to Lowe's to buy a longer socket to take out the 4 bumper beam nuts. I did not have to cut the bumper fascia and hitch comes out the back with a 1/4 inch clearance from plastic.

by:
2007 BMW X5

Easy install. This was for a 2007 BMW X5. Watch all the videos. I was confused about removing the front portion of the rear bumper, but I just had to use a little force. Some instructions don’t explicitly say to reinstall the crash bar- just make sure you do that so you don’t have to take the bumper off a second time to install. Also make sure you clip the parking sensors back on to the bumper while it is off, that way you don’t have to take the bumper off a third time, like I did. Install took me about 2 hours, even with removing the bumper 3 times. Also I did not trim the bumper- it wasn’t necessary on my model.

by:

Well hidden, clean-looking design, and appears to be excellent quality. Provides very good clearance above concrete curbs (if backing up vehicle into a parking spot) even though it sits low beneath bumper. The 4-pin wiring could've been better concealed by installer, but they suggested I can zip-tie to hitch to hide from view. Looking forward to testing it out on the road soon.

2010 BMW X5

Great Product, fast delivery, easy & clear instructions, besides good videos on web site.
Installation is easy and quick if done with air tools and in equipped garage or shop.
Definitely not a driveway work. No need to cut rear bumper trim (2010 BMW X5 Diesel) as mentioned in the instructions and videos.
Now I can tow my jet sky, boat, use my bike rack, etc...Awesome.

  • Comparing the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75600 and the Curt Trailer Hitch # 13077 for a 2015 BMW X5
Although the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 75600, and the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # 13077, are both great hitches that both have a 6,000 lb max Gross Trailer Weight and a 600 lb max Tongue Weight, I recommend going with the Draw-Tite # 75600. The reason that I recommend the Draw-Tite # 75600 over the Curt # 13077 is because the Curt hitch requires that you use a stabilization strap, like part # 18050, for any non-trailer loads like bike racks and cargo carriers per the Curt warranty....

Once you connect to the correct wires all you will need to do is run the power/ground wire and you are good to go which you can see from the attached install video. In regard to the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75600, the plastic push rivets that are included will only...

  • Trailer Hitch Receiver For a 2014 BMW X5 35i Which Does Not Require Removal Of Impact Structure
The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75600 is going to be our closest receiver which meets your requirements on your 2014 BMW X5 35i. The Curt # 13077, Draw-Tite # DT36GR (76903), and EcoHitch # EH44FR (X7403) all require the removal of the impact structure which you do not want to remove. The Draw-Tite # 75600 does not require removal of the impact structure but still will require trimming of the rear fascia as all the receivers for your X5. I recommend installing the Curt...

  • Is There Lower Fascia Trimming Required to Install Hitch on 2018 BMW X5
For your 2018 BMW X5 lower fascia trimming will be required to install either the Draw Tite part # 75600 or the EcoHitch part # 306-X7265 you referenced as well. Due to the design of the lower fascia on your vehicle there's no way to fit a hitch through it without trimming.

  • Does Draw Tite Hitch Part # 75600 Fit 2013 BMW X5 35d
As long as his 2013 BMW X5 35d does not have the M package the Draw Tite hitch part # 75600 would be a confirmed fit. It is possible that by sport suspension system he is referring to the M package but you should see an M badge on the vehicle.

  • Recommended Hitch Mount and Trunk Mount Bike Rack to Carry 3 Bikes on a 2011 BMW X5
Both the Yakima Fullback 3 # Y02633 and the Thule Gateway Pro # TH78VR are confirmed to fit your 2011 BMW X5. However, we have found the best bike for SUVs, especially those with a spoiler, is the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top # HRF2-3. It's specifically designed to fit with a hatch to help prevent any damage to the vehicle. Installing a hitch is going to be a more permanent option, like you said; however, there are definite advantages over a trunk mount. The biggest is the fact that...

  • Using an Electric Trailer Brake Controller With Boat Trailer Hydraulic Brakes
The 2012 BMW X5 has a rated towing capacity of 6000-lbs according to my research and for this vehicle we offer several Class III hitches (viewable on the link provided) that share this same maximum towing capacity, along with a tongue weight limit of 600-lbs. Note that these hitches do not fit the M model. You'll want to be sure that your fully-loaded boat/trailer does not exceed the towing or tongue weight capacities of either the vehicle or the hitch (your hitch should have a sticker...

  • Installation of Trailer Hitch Receiver and Fascia Trimming Required on 2012 BMW X5
The Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver Class III - 2" # 75600 is my recommendation that is confirmed to fit your 2012 BMW X5. All of the hitches available for your vehicle will require fascia trimming, but this one is the least noticeable. It will have you trim a 2 inch deep and 8 inch wide portion of the underside of your fascia for installation. I've attached a video as well as the installation details to assist.
