Video Transcript for Curt Wiring 55151 Review

Today we're going to review part number 55151. This is the Curt Powered Converter Wiring Kit. Now this kit will provide the wire that needs to be run to the vehicle battery to power the lights on your trailer. This kit is designed to work with all powered converter wiring harnesses and includes the necessary ring terminals, connectors to complete the installation of the power converter wiring harness. This is made to go with the part number 56146. I've got an example of that here. This is the powered converter right here. This part number will require this wiring kit to be connected to your vehicle.

Basically what you end up doing, this kit, first let me show you what it includes in this kit and then I'm going to show you how that wires up. This kit will include 20 feet of 12 gauge wire. It includes this inline fuse holder, a 10 amp fuse, a 3/8 inch diameter ring terminal, a couple of butt connectors, a grounding screw, some cable ties to take up any slack in the wiring and a large piece of double face tape. Basically when you use these parts to install your power converter, what you'll do is again, the double face tape is used to put on your converter, to attach it to a spot so it doesn't move around. Now there is a white wire that comes out of your converter with a ring terminal on it. You can use the grounding screw for that. Then the black wire is the power or battery wire that needs to run to the front of your battery. Just like that, so what you end up doing is you'll take this extra length of wire and you'll take one end of it, use one of the butt connectors and you'll attach that just like that. Then you'll run this length of wire up to the front of your vehicle to attach to your battery. Then the other end, see where the other ...

There it is, right there. Once you run this other end up there and before you attach it to the battery, you want to run it through this inline fuse holder. Again, you'll take another butt connector, attach it one side of the fuse holder and then on the other side you'll put this ring terminal and then that's what will attach to your positive posts of your battery. Then before you hook everything up, you just open up your inline fuse holder, take your 10 amp included fuse, push it into the fuse holder, put the cap back on it. Then you'll be all ready to go. Then like I say with these cable ties, if there's any wire hanging down, you can take it up with the cable ties. That's how this wiring kit would work with the 56146 power converter kit. That should do it for the review on part number 55151, the Curt Powered Converter Wiring Kit.

Excellent customer service! Needed a replacement for one that didn't work, they were able to send me a new one incredible fast.

by:

Have purchased a number of hitches and wire harness for a number of different vehicles I have owned. All products were easy to install and worked perfectly . The instructions were clear and quality of their products is top notch. I have used their customer service to ensure I was ordering the right product for a older vehicle (75 Toyota Landcruiser) they were patient and ensured I got the right set . Their customer service is matched by their pricing and that would be hard to beat . Delivery (Canada) was exceptionally fast. Probably not my last order and I have recommended this company and their products to my friends. If your considering a purchase I don't think you will be disappointed and you will be saving lots of money doing it yourself.

by:

Just what is needed. Took one star off because the yellow battery crimp connector is a bit shallow, missed it and had to get another from autozone.

by:

This is a very complex way to tap the taillight system to hook up two trailer lights but----- welcome to the 21st century.

by:

This was very helpful with the install. Easy to run to battery underneath with car on jack stands.

by:

yes,it is nothing more than 12ga wire plus a couple of terminals,
it comes 20' long most places only do 16'....it is easy to cut,
how do you stretch ?
besides,it was inexpensive to buy

by:

Contained everything pictured and worked well for running power to the powered tail light converter

by:

Everyhting I ordered was shipped and received on time. I also had an installation question which was answered the next day. This is what I call great customer service from a company that sells quality products. Thank you.

  • Will Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 75758 Fit a 2014 Ford Escape S
I checked with the manufacturer and trailer hitch # 75758 does fit the 2014 Ford Escape S model. I have linked a video showing a typical installation for you. If you plan on doing some towing I recommend the etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts, 2 balls, a hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag. For trailer wiring you can use Tekonsha # 118566

Yes, you are correct that Tow Ready wiring harness # 118667 is intended for only the 4-door sedan versions of the Jetta. For a 2009 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI Tow Ready does not offer a wiring harness. However, Curt does have 4-pole wiring kit # C59236 that is a confirmed fit for the 2009 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen Wagon, including the TDI. I linked an installation video for this item showing a 2009 Sportwagen TDI. You can use install kit # 55151 to simplify the process. This includes...

  • Installation of Curt Wiring Harness on 2022 Mazda CX-5
The best way to identify the wires on your 2022 Mazda CX-5 is going to be with a tester like the # PTW2993. Wiring colors are not universal, and I was unable to find a wiring diagram that might show this. You could try to contact a local dealer to see if they have this information. If you don't want to use a tester, the only other way to do it is splice into wires until you find the right one which I would not recommend. Also, it looks like you only have the # C56496. You will also need...

I'm glad to hear that you're happy with the hitch you purchased! Curt hasn't tested a wiring harness on your vehicle, so they couldn't make a recommendation. The correct harness will depend on what kind of wiring system your S5 uses. You'll need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 on the circuits feeding the taillight assemblies. You could have a 3-wire or a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) system. Regardless of the type, the ZCI Circuit Protected Vehicle Wiring Harness w/ 4-Pole...

To install a trailer wiring harness on your 2012 Honda Civic, all you'll need is the Tekonsha # 118420. You won't need the # 55151 wiring kit, as the # 118420 draws all the power it needs through the vehicle's taillight circuits. The Curt # C11391 hitch you'd looked at is a confirmed fit for your vehicle. You'll also need a ball mount like # 3593, a # PC2 hitch pin and # 19256 for a 1-7/8 or # 19258 for a 2 inch trailer ball. • Can Trailer Wiring Harness Power Wire be Connected to Outlet at Back of Vehicle Instead of Battery
Only the battery should be used when installing any type of powered trailer wiring harness. Part of the reason is that it is not tested in any other way. A connection to the battery is reliable but going through some other circuit could lean to unforeseen and unwanted operation of the system. Plus, if the circuit for that power outlet at the back is fused with or otherwise connected to any other circuit then you will lose that level of isolation between the tow vehicle wiring and the trailer...

The strap referred to for the # 11130 Curt trailer hitch, part # 18050, would be used as an extra stabilizer for the bike rack or accessory. In the case of a bike rack, you would attach the strap between the upright bar of the bike rack and the rear door on your 2010 Mini Cooper.
