Can Trailer Wiring Harness Power Wire be Connected to Outlet at Back of Vehicle Instead of Battery

Question:

Rather than run a power feed all the way to the battery, couldnt I use the power plug in the hatch? The power plug in the hatch is protected by a 30 amp fuse. Couldnt I tap into that wire, install my fuse holder for a 10 amp fuse that powers the PWM 56201? I would still be protecting my vehicle by the 10 amp fuse wouldnt I ?

Only the battery should be used when installing any type of powered trailer wiring harness. Part of the reason is that it is not tested in any other way. A connection to the battery is reliable but going through some other circuit could lean to unforeseen and unwanted operation of the system.

Plus, if the circuit for that power outlet at the back is fused with or otherwise connected to any other circuit then you will lose that level of isolation between the tow vehicle wiring and the trailer wiring.

And last, it will void the harness warranty if installed any other way.

Routing the power wire is just time consuming but not difficult. I have included a link to a help article with tips on routing the power wire for you.
