It's critically important when you start out looking to tow things with your vehicle that you use a hitch that is designed to be used with your vehicle and a rig/trailer accessories that are designed to be used with that hitch.

Your 2006 Mercedes E350 Wagon is designed to be equipped with Class I hitches only, such as the Curt # C11701 , designed for light-duty towing, has a tongue weight capacity of 250 lbs, and a gross trailer weight capacity of 2500 lbs. There is not a custom wiring harness available for your vehicle, so you'll need to splice into your tail light if you're in need of trailer wiring, which requires a wiring kit like the Curt # C56496 and a powered converter like the Curt # 55151

Unfortunately, towing capacities of the 3500-4000 lbs range that you're seeking needs at least a Class III hitch, which will require a towing vehicle with a sturdier frame for towing than your Mercedes can support. Even if you were to install a higher class hitch onto your Mercedes, the vehicle itself would not support the load, and ultimately your vehicle and what you were towing would both be damaged in that scenario. Using hitch and trailer accessories designed to be paired with your vehicle will help to protect your investment all around.
