Video Transcript for Tekonsha Wiring 118151 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the ModuLite installation wiring kit. This kit provides the wire to be run to the vehicle battery to power the lights on your trailer. It works with all ModuLite wiring harnesses and includes all of the connectors necessary to complete the installation of the ModuLite wiring harness. This kit's going to come with one 10-amp fuse. It's going to come with the fuse holder, which is this component right here. It's going to come with eight cable ties. These are going to be designed to secure the wiring up and out of the way as you run it along the length of the vehicle.

It's going to come with one three-eighth inch diameter ring terminal, one half-inch diameter ring terminal, and it's going to come with one bundle of wiring. This is 12-gauge wiring that measures 20 feet long. You're going to get a butt connector as well. Basically, what you would do is you would connect this wire here to the power lead coming out of the ModuLite. You want to connect the two wires with the butt connector, and then you take the other other end, run it to the vehicle battery, and one end of this bundle would connect to one half of the fuse holder. The other half of the fuse holder would get one of the two ring terminals placed on it, and get connected to the positive post of the vehicle battery.

Again, the 10-amp fuse is included, goes directly in this area here, pushes in, and then it's got the cap on there that would go over it and keep it safe and protected. Then, you've got your cable ties to secure any excess or slack in your wiring. That's going to do it for today's look at the ModuLite installation wiring kit.

I installed the trailer wiring connector in about an hour and a half and it has worked well. I store the coil of the pig tail coiled in the tire inflation pump, floor compartment, until needed. I used it in my 2021 Ford Ecosport that I also installed a receiver hitch under. Easy to install and much, much cheaper than having the dealership install their version.

by:

Twenty feet of wire wasn't quite enough to make the entire run from the ModuLite to the battery in my 2000 Ford Econoline Van. It could have used another butt connector to attach the wire to the Modulite. These were very small problems as I had other wire and a connector on hand to complete the installation. Four stars for the product.

Five stars for etrailer's website and expert advice online in the form of videos, descriptions for installation, and Q&A section!

Thanks a lot!

Wonderful! Trailer lights bright!

by:

Having just bought a new Kia Soul with LED tail lights, I needed to be certain to get the correct products to properly wire my vehicle without damaging the electrical system. Local installers in my hometown were going to simply tap into the rear tail light wiring and go straight to the trailer lights.

Thanks to you guys and your helpful videos, you advised me to use the #118151 Modulite Installation Wiring Kit in conjunction with with the #119176 Wiring Harness. By doing so, the power wire to operate the trailer lights comes directly from my vehicle battery, and alleviates and/or prevents possible damage to the tail light system of my car.

I advise anyone to get in touch with the "EXPERTS" at etrailer.com for excellent advice and superior products to get the job done!!!!

Thanks,

Wayne

  • Can the Access LED Truck Bed Lighting Kit Be Wired Directly to the Truck Battery
In order to install the Access LED Truck Bed Lighting Kit, # A70380, so that it can be turned on without the key in the vehicle on, you can just wire it to the battery and use the switch that is already included with the light kit. I recommend have the power wire run through wiring kit # 118151 which includes an in line 10 amp fuse.

  • Can Optronics 55-Watt Halogen Light # QH16CTS Be Wired into Reverse Lights of 2013 Ford F-150
It is possible to wire an auxiliary light such as the Optronics 55-Watt Halogen Light # QH16CTS into the reverse light circuit of a vehicle. In order to do so the circuit must have the current capacity for both the OEM bulbs and the additional light. I researched in the online manual for your 2013 F-150 the bulbs used and the fuse rating for the reverse light circuit. The truck uses two 921 bulbs, each rated to draw 1.3 amps. The two bulbs together will draw 2.6 amps. This circuit is protected...

  • Parts Needed to Add Trailer Wiring and a Brake Controller to a 1991 Dodge D350
You could use the wiring harness like that on your 1991 Dodge D350. However, unless your trailer is drawing more than 7.5 amps for brakes/turn signals and/or 7.5 amps for running lights, you can just use the Curt harness # C55317 and it will be much easier. But to add a brake controller as well, you will also need to add a 4 and 7 Way installation kit # ETBC7. Your brake controller will need to be hardwired into the truck. I have included some instruction links and videos that will explain...

The Tekonsha Prodigy RF Wireless Trailer Brake Controller, # TK94FR, can be used on your 2014 Audi Q5 TDI. The brake controller requires a working 7-way connection at the rear on the vehicle. If your Q5 is only equipped with a 4-way, you will need to install the 4 Pole to 7 Pole Adapter, # 37185, along with the Modulite Installation Wiring Kit, # 118151. There have been pairing problems noted on some European made vehicles with factory tow package wiring. During the pairing process,...

For the 2001 Chevy Silverado with or without a factory 7-Way trailer connector, the wiring for the brake controller is present. However on some models there are additional connections that will need to be made under the hood to make everything fully functional. I have included a link to an FAQ article that explains these connections. If your truck does not have the factory installed 7-Way trailer connector you will need to add one using # HM40975. Or, if there is a round connector above...

If nothing is working, then I would first check to see if any tow package fuses or relays are missing or blown. Use the owner's manual to find all fuse/relay locations. If that is not the issue, then it sounds like the previous owner has done a number on the original set up and you may have to have Toyota replace some of the factory tow package parts. Regarding the under-hood connection, it might already be set up from the factory (but the fuse associated with the battery feed could be...

The wiring harness for your 2011 Kia Sorento is the Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring # 118506, and it includes the power wire you've asked about. It is necessary to install the power wire because the converter requires power directly from the battery in order to distribute that power to the harness and protect your vehicles sensitive wiring. This harness can be used with an adapter for your 5-flat trailer connector. You will need the Adapter 4 Pole to 5 Pole Trailer Wiring Adapter, #...

Since the Upgraded ModuLite Wiring Harness # 119250KIT is a universal harness it can indeed be used to add a 4-way connector to your 2016 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500 motorhome to tow your 2012 Honda CR-V. Since this kit pulls power directly from your battery it will keep from overloading the tail light/brake light circuits on your motorhome.

Does your trailer have brake lights that are separate from the turn signals? If so you would need the converter part # RM-732 to split the signal up and allow your taillights to function properly. This would install on the trailer's wiring.

  • Is there a Constant Draw on the Vehicle Battery when the Modulite Wiring Harness is Installed
The modulite converter only applies power from the vehicle battery when the turn signals, brake lights, or tail lights are activated. When there is not a current draw on any of these lighting circuits the power from the vehicle battery is shut off at the Modulite converter, which avoids battery drain. Hooking the power source to an ignition source is not recommended because the Modulite is essentially bypassing the vehicles sensitive wiring system. Vehicles today are using such thin wiring...

Test the pins on the 4-Way using the circuit tester while someone sites in the vehicle and runs through the functions. There are few ways to go about this, depending on what you've already installed on your vehicle. Without knowing the year, make and model of your truck, I can recommend universal parts to get the job done. You'll need to start out with a 4-pole hardwire kit that is designed to convert your 3-wire system (separate stop/turn signals) to work with the 2-wire system (combined stop/turn signals) on the trailer, like the # C59496. From there, if all you're wanting is to control the basic trailer...

It should show power when you step on the brake pedal. If it does not, then the first thing I would check is the position of the red wire in the connector that plugs into the truck. It should be positioned like in the picture I have provided. If it is in another location, then move it to the proper location. If...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Doesnt work With Brake Pedal of 2003 GMC 2500HD Sierra
This is a super common problem for GM trucks around the age of your 2003 GMC 2500HD Sierra. Check the third brake light fuse of the truck. This fuse blows very easily in your truck and when that circuit is dead it takes out the circuit needed to activate a brake controller with the brake pedal. An easy way to check this is to press the brake pedal and see if the brake light above the truck bed activates. If so, then this is the problem.

  • Troubleshooting Brake Controller that Only Works with Override Lever
Is the brake controller a proportional brake controller? If so, then it is working fine and you should try testing it with a trailer. A proportional controller has to sense deceleration for it to activate trailer with the brake pedal. If it is a time-delayed controller it sounds like the brake controller itself isn't working properly based on what you described. Testing the brake controller is fairly easy. Sever the blue brake output wire near the brake controller leaving enough room to...

A lot depends on what the factory 7-Way wiring is being used for. What I recommend is what you have suggested and adding a 4-Way to the tail lights, # 118344, provided the tail lights are the same on your cutaway as the regular E series van. If they are different then I recommend a powered converter, # C59236. This will get the signals for...

On a 4- to 7-Way adapter such as # 37185 or in the kit # ETBC7 you would only need the trailer light functions and the black wire connected (12 volt power) via the 40 amp circuit breaker and the white ground wire attached in order for the Prodigy RF brake controller # TK94FR to function.
