Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed beneath your vehicle, near the trailer hitch. A mounting bracket (sold separately) is recommended to keep the connector secure.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

@JustinE Great, we're glad to hear that!

2011 Ford Explorer

I just bought a new 2011 Ford Explorer, I need to tow a small utility trailer. I was unsure how this harness would be plugged in, but it was so easy a 5 year old could do it. I found the Ford provided trailer harness behind the right rear tire above the muffler, this harness clipped right in, I used the original cap on the other end to cap the male end off.
I have only one bad comment, the zip ties provided are not long enough to go around the trailer hitch pipe. So I doubled up or used ones I had. There is plenty of length to get me to the hook up. Make sure you keep it away from the hot pipes. See attached pics. I submitted a couple questions to etrailer.com and they were very responsive.

by:

Very simple install on the wiring harness.
This
is my 2nd hitch installation and should last My lifetime.

by:

Nice hitch. Well made. Very sturdy Installation was easy as everything fit like it was supposed to. No modifications or issues. Wiring harness connected easily as advertised. Very pleased overall

by:
2014 Ford Explorer

Perfect fit. I watched the video for installation and found that my 2014 Ford Explorer didn’t have the same connection pictured. Mine terminated with a cap instead of being connected in series like the video.

Once I figured that out with the help of customer service (who was awesome by the way) I pulled it off and hooked it right up. Zero problems. These folks do a great job of knowing their product and providing great service. This is my third hitch install with etrailer.com.

by:

Super fast delivery. And had it installed in 15 minutes start to finish.
Thanks

2018 Ford Explorer

Great product! Have two existing connectors underneath my 2018 Ford Explorer XLT. Had to disconnect both to determine which one was correct - no big deal. Ran the wiring pretty much straight back to the bumper and over to the hitch. Had to use a couple longer zip ties.

by:
2017 Ford Explorer

Great product. Great customer service….Kudos to Quinn and Wayne! Great instructional material, especially the videos. I only had two minor issues. First, the rubber muffler hangers were buggers to remove; second, the instructions for the wiring harness indicate the 2017 explorer has two plugs which the Tekonsha T connector plugs into, problem was my explorer only has one plug? but in short order between Quinn and Wayne, I learned I only needed to plug one side of the Tekonsha T connector into my plug and cap the other side of the T with the cap I removed from my single plug. Long story longer, I took my vehicle to [moving company] who checked out the wiring with their test gizmo and all was perfect!
Big thank you to the etailer team!!!

Michael

Received the item on time, I'll be installing it tomorrow

2018 Ford Explorer

I called on a Sunday afternoon regarding confusion of a part. To my surprise a "person" picked up and helped me thru the process. To top it off a tech, that was previously with another customer, called back 10 minutes later to confirm and help clarify the confusion. By Tuesday I received the correct part and the return label for the part to be sent back. I have used e trailer for multiple items, but this was the first time with an issue (My fault) and they did an excellent job of helping me rectify my mistake. This solidified my decision to only purchase from e trailer!

by:

No issues at all. Would recommend and have recommended etrailer.com to other people.

by:

Purely plug and play! Found the connection on my car. Unplugged the two halves, plugged ths adaptor in. Tested the lights when the trailer was connected, everything worked perfectly!

by:

Pricing was extremely competitive and product quality was above my expectations. Harness was easy to install and worked as expected without any issues. Customer service at time of order was very good as well.

by:

This product was fairly easy to install. It took about 10 minutes. The only thing I think it needed was bigger zip ties. Overall I am pleased with it. Great product.

by:

Great product, easy install and instructions. Only 4 star because the bracket that I bought with it doesn't snap into it.

by:

Your products are working great, I have had no failures or problems with anything

by:
2013 Ford Explorer

Very straightforward installation, I watched a video online and it was just as easy as The video indicated!

by:
2013 Ford Explorer

Only had it a few days, but already loving it. Some cold weather and non-ideal working angle(see photos) made for an extended install on my '13 explorer base, but install was smooth as can be. Build quality seems second to none. Only thing left is to hook it up and take it for a spin!!

Only 1 thing regarding the matching T wiring harness: more zip ties please

Thanks guys and gals at etrailer !!

by:

It worked great hooking up lights on my 2018 Ford Explorer.

by:
2015 Ford Explorer

Well I am 74 years old and installed this hitch by myself using a floor jack and two jack stands. Took me a little longer than an hour since I had to work both sides. The video was extremely helpful especially the part about the strap to hold up the mufflers. I was able to set the hitch on top of the mufflers and then bolt oneside then the other. Really it took longer for me to get the wiring kit done than it did the hitch. I saved over $300 by doing it my self.

Thanks

C. O.

It still great had no problems with it.

by:

Recently purchased the wiring harness for my new vehicle. I called customer service and the lady was very helpful in getting the right harness for me. The harness was MUCH easier to install than expected. I had an electrical short on MY end of the trailer connection that I got fixed (had nothing to do with the harness product), and the harness worked perfectly. Very satisfied with the product and support from the company. The video showing the installation process was very helpful.

Still very pleased with the harness. I have used it multiple times and it is still perfect. Would absolutely recommend both the product and the company because of the quality of product and customer service

Even without the factory tow package your 2015 Ford Explorer should have a connector under it at the rear. For a 4-way trailer connector use # 118540. Or if you need a 7-way use # 118272. I've attached videos of both being installed. If you happen to need a brake controller, I recommend the Prodigy P2 # 90885 that is extremely easy to install and operate. This powers the trailer lights and protects the vehicle wiring. I have included a link to an FAQ on routing the power wire for you.

The best way to determine if a vehicle has a factory tow package is to reach out to the dealer with the VIN. It sounds like you are looking for a trailer wiring harness.
