Recommended Trailer Wiring Harness for 2014 Ford Explorer Without Tow Package

Question:

Question: I just purchased a 2014 Ford Explorer that is not tow ready. I purchased a Curt Tow receiver C13100 from you guys, but am confused on what is going to work for my trailer wiring. The Explorer is not wired for tow ready and has LED tail lights. I am looking for wiring that will work to pull a trailer with non-LED lights. There is no tail light wiring harness on the Explorer and I believe I will have to splice wire what ever wiring system works for the vehicle. Please help with what wiring will work with the 2014 Ford explorer with LED lights and not wired for trailer hook up. If there is a video of this I would appreciate seeing that also. Thank you, Terry Johnson Email - tj12hunt41@charter.net

Your Explorer might have the rectangular plug located to the right of the muffler on the passenger side of the vehicle (see linked video). If it does, you could use the # 118540 harness from Tow Ready. The harness is a plug and play install, pretty easy.

If you do NOT have the connector, you'll need to hardwire the trailer connector in place using the # C59496 wiring harness. I've linked you to a video showing that harness being installed on a different vehicle. The procedure would be fairly similar to your Explorer.

Either wiring harness will work fine with a trailer that's equipped with incandescent lamps.

If you don't already have a ball mount, I'd recommend # C45030 along with # 19260 for a 1-7/8 inch ball or # 63845 for a 2 inch ball.
