An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

2001 Toyota Sequoia

I modified my 2001 Toyota Sequoia to make it a camping rig for my wife and I. This included a water tank and roof top tent. The back end rode heavy and corners were a challenge at speed on the highway. I got these and they were easy and pretty quick to install. It made a noticeable improvement in the ride.

by:

These are a huge improvement over the leveling kit I was using. I now have very little sag and it handles bumps very nice when towing. When not towing it's a little jarring when you hit bumps. I have gotten used to it. The only improvement that they could do is make it easier to swop back to the factory bump stops, like a quick release system.

One of the timbrens appeared to be installed once and removed. Box said it was 2018 on it.

The second spring does look rough and I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you. I am not sure what the 2018 refers to however I know that it is not a manufacturing date. I checked and we have had recent stock checked into our warehouse. We do not have any remaining stock from 2018.

2011 Lexus GX 460

Product came securely packaged and complete and quick. Took about 45 mins to install. I bought this to try to reduce the 3 1/2 inch sag at the hitch of my Lexus GX460. It did that well. I now only sag 2 inches that I feel is acceptable. The trailer has about 484 lbs weight. The ride doesn't seem affected and towing bounce(porpoising) is gone. Thank you etrailer.

Timbren are working fine. Towing is much more controlled. I am glad i purchased them. I don’t notice any ride difference when running empty.

by:
Lexus

We had these installed about 1 year ago on a 2015 Lexus GX460 to help with towing a horse trailer. On the stock suspension, there was a noticeable sag on the back end of the car when towing that was likely "fine" but was concerning for us over the long term.

Since installing this suspension system we are more confident towing a heavy load behind us. It did make things slightly "bumpier" when not towing anything, but we probably wouldn't have even noticed if we weren't looking for it.

by:
2006 Toyota4Runner

The simple fix for the sagging situation. With these new Timbren 'bump stops' in place, both my camp trailer and vehicle *(2006 5 Runner---better than a 4 Runner) ride level and smooth...and even looks cooler than cool.

by:
2017 Toyota4Runner

They work great. Hauled my camper about 3hrs with a 325# tongue weight and the 4runner sat flat and drove great. I like these better than air bag and they install in less than 30mins. No more inflating and deflating then inflating and deflating for the trip home.

by:

It did its job which prevented down travel of the rear suspension. However it caused too harsh of a ride. The weight distributing hitch was enough for me

by:

I tow a 16' utility trailer with a 2017 4Runner and this upgrade is absolutely outstanding! Noticeable difference from hookup to the very first bump. Highly recommend if you tow with a 4Runner (or the like)!

2015 Toyota4Runner

Received the product and installation was very easy. The longest thing to do in the process is taking your tires off. Also make sure you have a vice or c- clamp because to tight the rubber piece to the bracket takes a lot of torque. Have not been able to test it will update my comments later

This is an excellent product that helped level my 4runner while pulling my travel trailer. By preventing the back end from sagging, the front wheels stay fixed to the road for proper steering. I believe the 3/8 bushing was too small and I required 1/2 inch instead. Kaylyn at etrailer.com went above and beyond their normal customer service and got me in touch with the sales rep for Timbren, who promptly sent me the right size in time to make my big trip. He worked with me to find the right size for my after-market lift kit. In a time that companies are indifferent at best, etrailer.com makes the customer feel important in a sincere way. I also love e.trailer's selection and fast shipping.

2015 Lexus GX 460

Definitely a simple and easy to install option to stiffen up the rear of a gx460 my boat is at the maximum capacity of 6500 lb it definitely has a better ride stance and does not squat as much with these installed. I am thinking that I need the airbags in addition to get a little more of a buffer or cushion so that I do not destroy the bearings in the rear end. I probably also need a weight distributing hitch. I feel the price is reasonable for the rear however find that the front timbren kit being the same price is a bit disproportionate the front bump stops are much more simple and do not require the additional manufacturing of a steel support bracket. The price is reasonable for the Rears. I was however disappointed to find that the hardware sent with the kit did not conclude stainless steel bolts. I reused the factory bolts. I also found that I needed an extra washer to completely tighten without a gap. I was able to install these without taking off the tires in about 15 minutes. For their simplicity they are definitely worth the upgrade. I would hope that timbren would offer a lower price for the front units and for the price of the rears give proper stainless steel Hardware instead of zinc plated that will Rust quickly.

Thank you for your review. It would not be helpful to use both the air bags in the coil springs and the timbrens. If you are still experiencing sag, I recommend to use a weight distribution. I have attached a helpful link to help choose the best weight distribution system for your trailer and the ion of weight distribution hitches we have available.

After 1 year Still happy with my purchase. I have both the Timbren rear suspension enhancement as well as the Air lift system - the combination has made my GX460 much more stable when towing my boat that is at the Max Capacity for the truck. I would definitely install again If I had another GX. I find these to be a great value.

Easy install. Haven't hauled my trailer yet.

by:
2016 Toyota4Runner

These worked great on my 2003 4Runner Limited. I can tow my 16 / 7 ft. trailer with very little squat on the rear axel ... The install was super easy and I didn't need a jack-stand... Just a wrench... That's It !!
I took some heavy dips on some Mexican roads with a 7,000 lbs trailer (700 lbs tongue weight). Also the rear cab had 500 lbs..... I was doing 55 mph and I believe it saved me from a hard impact.

Courtney B... (the rep)... Recommend the product and I couldn't be happier!

Its been 2 years now and all is still working well.

by:

Working great. I had read reviews about them being too stiff whem you aren't pulling a trailer, but it seems like they softened up a bit after first putting them on. I felt a few hard jolts going over speed bumps and such the first few days, but now I don't notice them at all when I don't have a trailer attached. They are still improving the ride with a heavy trailer.

I'd give 5 stars but my mechanic neighbor had to help me install them because there was something wrong with the bolts that came in the package. It was a year ago and I can't remember the details. Without him I think I could have returned them and gotten a fix and installed them by myself. It's a very simple install when all the parts are in good shape.

Lexus GX 460

I am dealing with Timbren. The washer for mounting the rubber spring to the mounting plate clearance hole is too small for the bolt diameter. The washer is not something you can get out without damaging in my opinion. The bolt also will not thread completely into the mounting plate because of poor threads ( not tapped correctly). Galling of bolt if you try to tighten. Very poor QC or inspection at Timbren or wherever. Once again, working eith Timbren on this. Maybe you should check you kits at etrailer!!

I pulled the kits we have in stock and they check out fine. The washer inside the spring had the same diameter as the spring for the bolt. Could you send in a photo of your kit?

2003 Toyota4Runner

I put TTORSEQ on the rear of my 2003 4Runner Sport, I had noticed the 4Runner had settled over the years particularly in the rear when I tow a Chalet camper. I was looking for helper springs or replacing the rear springs (very expensive). I was not aware of this type of suspension support but it came up on a Google search.
They work great! There is a significant difference when towing the camper.
ONE recommendation for Timbren. In the installation instructions include torque values for the bolt attaching the bump stop to the bracket. I was surprised at how much torque was required and initially thought Timbren had sent me the wrong bolts - they had not.

by:
2018 Toyota4Runner

The product works as advertised. I have a 2018 Toyota 4RUNNER SR5 Premium 4wd. I tow a Coleman Utah camper that weighs approximately 3500lbs with a tongue weight of about 300lbs when fully loaded. Before installing the Timbrens the vehicle would sag about 3.5 inches measuring from the ground to the bottom of the hitch receiver. It was very noticeable. Handling was OK but not great. After installing the Timbrens the sag is only about 1 inch. Handling has improved. I have not noticed any difference when not towing. I am 71 years old and did the installation myself with no assistance. The online videos are very helpful. The hardest part for me was removing and replacing the tires. They are heavy for someone my age. Installing the unit with the tires on was not an option on my vehicle. One note on the install, when attaching the rubber bump stop to the bracket a vice to hold the bracket in place is very helpful. It takes alot of muscle to tighten the bump stop to the bracket completely but it will tighten. I used a half inch heavy duty socket wrench with 3/4 inch deep well socket so that I could apply sufficient torque to tighten the unit. Attaching the assembled unit to the vehicle was not difficult. A 13mm ratchet style wrench will speed things up but is not necessary. So far I am very pleased.

by:

Timbren helper bump stop was very easy to install. My boat trailer rides much better after installation. The boat and trailer combined probably only weigh 4200 lbs but the tongue weight is slightly heavier than I would like. Suspension is not being pushed down to the point that affects headlight alignment anymore. Great easy system that allows for normal and comfortable ride when not in use.

by:

Installed on a 2004 Toyota 4Runner. We tow a 22-foot Pathfinder bay boat with it. I previously had airbags on it but they kept breaking and leaking. Installed these and they work perfectly! No maintenance and they get the job done. Very little squat in the suspension with the boat hooked up. Easy to install too. Don't notice them at all when the vehicle is unloaded.

by:
2016 Lexus GX 460

excellent upgrade to the stock rubber bumpers in my 2016 Lexus GX 460. The stock has a tendency to drift when hit with cross winds above 60mph. This Timbren front suspension enhancement eliminated that. The SUV is more composed even when driving on rough pavement. Cornering is more secure for a tall SUV such as the 460 with high center of gravity.
It's also easy to install. Jack up the vehicle until the rubber bumper clears the metal then unscrew it. Screw the Timbren in.

by:

Very well built! They for me are more of insurance policy to keep our vehicle from bottoming out. So that hasn’t yet, and hopefully won’t!

  • Suspension Enhancement Options for 2020 Toyota 4Runner
We have two options for suspension enhancement for your 2020 Toyota 4Runner which have pros and cons. The air bag kits like the Firestone part # F4135 have the advantage of being very adjustable which allows you to have the suspension support when you want it and then have the full ride quality of your vehicle when not needed since you can deflate them. The disadvantage is that the install is a bit more involved and you have to maintain air pressure in the bags. This is better for someone...
