Brake Controller Wiring for a 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport
Question:
I have a 2008 Toyota Highlander Sport. I am planning on installing a hitch, wiring, and electric brake to pull a 3,000 pound pop-up camper or a 2,000 pound jet ski trailer. The pop-up camper has electric brakes. The wiring harness that is recommended for the Toyota Highlander 118449 is a 4 pole flat connection. It is my understanding that the electric brake requires the 6 or 7 pole round connection I believe that this is the type of connector that is on the trailer. Should I use a different wiring harness than the recommended one? Will the brakes work with an adapter? What do you recommend? I am going to purchase all of the parts through etrailer.com, due primarily to your excellent how-to videos on Youtube.

You will actually need the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector, item # 118449, for your vehicle and the, item # ETBC7, Brake Controller Installation Kit, along with the brake controller of your choice. I recommend going with a proportional controller, like Tekonsha Prodigy part # 90885. The following link below will take you to the recommended brake controllers for your Highlander.
You will need to hard wire the additional brake, power and auxiliary functions that your trailers need with the supplied wiring and hardware in the ETBC7 Kit. If your trailers have different connectors you can get an adapter for the different connector or you can rewire the trailer wiring harness to the 7-Way connector. see links
