What is the Metric Equivalent to an L78-15 Trailer Tire Size on a 1952 Vagabond Camper

Question:

I am trying to find out what I should buy to replace the tires and wheels if needed to move this vintage camper. Existing tires just say L78 15

What you have is the old letter size tires. An L78-15 was a larger tire which would be most likely a 235/75-15 in the newer metric size. This is not a common size for a trailer anymore but you could go to a 225/75-15. It would be a little shorter and a little more narrow.

As long as the weight capacity of a 225/75-15 tire will be enough for your 1952 Vagabond camper, going to a smaller size will work. You will just need to make sure the weight capacity and bolt pattern of the tire and wheel combo match the trailer.

To find the trailer capacity, there should be a plate on the tongue or frame that lists it. Depending on the bolt pattern, there are different load ranges available in this tire size. Use the bolt pattern FAQ article linked to determine the bolt pattern you have.

If you find you need a higher capacity, it may be possible to go up to a 16 inch. Since a 16 inch tire and wheel will be taller and wider, you will need to measure the space around the tire, above the tire and behind it, to make sure there is room for a larger tire. I have included some tire FAQ article links that should help.
