Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

One of the tires I received is a year and four months old! Manufacture date code of 4921 = Dec 6, 2021. The other two are six months old. Manufacture date code of 4122 = Oct 2, 2022. If the average age to replace tires is 6 years, one tire is already at 3/4 life expectancy remaining. I can accept a six month old tire, but not one that is almost a year and a half old upon receipt.

I do have information that I hope will alleviate your concerns on the tire. It is best to purchase tires that are no more than two years old. As long as they are in that two year time frame, it will not affect the warranty or the life expectancy of the tire.

These wheels definitely add to the look of my new boat trailer. The tires and how they hold up will only be proven with time and miles.

Excellent Product!! Have had them for a little over a year and have put about 1k miles on them. Couldn't be happier. They are SOLID and they have not disappointed me on my travels. The extra load range was exactly what I needed for added assurance. I would recommend this product to anyone that needs them. I get very good looks when I am on the road with this upgrade.

  • Is Aluminum Rim Used on AM31245 Available Separately
The # AM31245 wheel/tire combo you referenced uses the HWT Series 04 13x5 Star Mag aluminum trailer wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, which is no longer available. Instead, I have a similar looking wheel, the Aluminum Hi-Spec Series S5 Trailer Wheel - 13" x 5" Rim - 5 on 4-1/2 - Silver # AM22323HWT. I attached a video of this wheel for you to see if you like it.

  • Can I Use Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System with Hubs on my Boat Trailer
The Timbren Axle-Less Trailer Suspension System with Hubs - 5 on 4-1/2 - Off-Road Tires part # A12WS545 can be fully submerged in fresh water to launch your boat. They are designed with a corrosion resistant black powder coat and a lot of our customers use them on their boat trailers. I have attached a video for your reference and the dimensions of the system. • Does Going from Steel to Aluminum Trailer Wheels Require Different Lug Nuts
Aluminum trailer wheels like the Loadstar part # AM31245 that you referenced have steel sleeves where the lug nuts contact which means you do not need to use different lug nuts from what you have now that you were using with your steel wheels. There would be no issues due to dissimilar metals.

  • Choosing Between Galvanized Trailer Wheels and Aluminum Trailer Wheels for a Boat Trailer
In the galvanizing process, depending on how the manufacturer dries the wheels some of it can pool on one side due to the dipping processed used. That is an issue you are going to run into with many wheel manufacturers. It is an ongoing issue. What I recommend is to go with an aluminum wheel and tire combo like # AM32001HWTB or # AM31245. You pay a little more, but you still get excellent corrosion resistance, style, and none of the issues associated with galvanized wheels.

  • Will 175/80-13 Wheels and Tires Fit On an EZ Loader EZB 12-14 1000 Trailer?
You will most likely need to modify your EZ Loader EZB 12-14' 1000 trailer as it comes with a 4.80-12 wheel and tire like the Kenda # AM30590. This tire is 20.5" tall and 4.8" wide. The Loadstar ST175/80D13 # AM31245 you found is 24" tall and 6.6" wide. This will require an additional 1.75" of vertical clearance and 0.9" of additional clearance between the tire side wall and any part of the frame or wheel well the tire may hit. If you can identify the axle your trailer has you may be...

  • Mounting Pad to Inside of Tire Dimension of # AM31245 Wheel/Tire Combo
The section width of the 175/80-13 tire is 6.6 inches, which is the width of the tire at its thickest point. The wheel has a zero offset, which means that the mounting pad of the wheel that sits against the hub face is centered on the width of the wheel. The distance from the furthest inside portion of the wheel to the mounting pad would be half the tire width, which is 3.3 inches. The tire has a capacity of 1660 lbs at 65 psi. • Rust Resistant Wheels Tires and Suspension For Off-Roading With Trailer
We do offer many options of galvanized and aluminum wheels that do not rust or corrode. The Timbren Axle-less suspension system part # ASR400S02-G does not come in a galvanized option but the Timbren systems are powder coated with black powder coat to resist wear and corrosion. This kit is also made for smaller tires, so it doesn't accommodate a larger tire like you need for off-roading. I recommend Timbren Axle-less 1,200 lb suspension for Off-Road Tires part # A12WS545. • Recommended Tire/Wheel Combination For Trailer Smoker
From the tire size you said is on the trailer, the tires are 12 inch and would not be a fit for 13 inch wheels. For a tire with the numbers you said, the first number is the width of the tire and the second number is the size tire. I have attached a helpful article about tire size you can check out. You may be able to put 13 inch tire/wheel combos on your trailer. You will need to know the lug pattern and the pilot diameter, and determine if there is enough clearance with 13 inch wheels...
