Replacement Hubs, Bearings, Bearing Buddy, Wheels, Tires for Caulkins Trailer with Dexter 8-248 Hub
Question:
Friends, I have an old Caulkins trailer that is in good shape and I’m getting ready to travel about 2,000 miles with it and a 16’ fiberglass boat. I am thinking it’s best that I replace both hub assembly’s as complete units with the bearing buddies it’s not an ez-lube axle along with 2 mounted tires on rims. I also need a 2” hitch and ball I believe it’s 1 7/8. Also, if you have new bolts with hardware to better secure the wheel jack. Please let me know if you are able to determine the best parts and cost. Very appreciative of any assistance. Many thanks

I will start with the hubs. You have Dexter 8-248 hubs so the correct replacement is the Dexter Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 3,500-lb Axles - 5 on 4-1/2 # 84545BX. This assembly includes the bearings, races and seals. For Bearing Buddy replacements, you have the option of the # BB1980A-SS which are stainless steel or the # BB1980A which are chrome plated.
You currently have 5.30-12 load range C tires. The correct replacement wheels and tires would be the Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range C # AM30820. These tires have a maximum load of 1,045 lbs at 80 psi so you want to make sure you aren't exceeding 2,090 lbs with your boat on the trailer.
The Replacement Mounting Hardware for Fulton Jacks # F500286 is what you are looking for to replace those brackets on your jack.
When you say you need a 2" hitch and ball, I'm assuming you mean a ball mount since you already have a hitch with a 2" receiver installed on your 2005 Toyota Tundra. There should be a stamp on top of your coupler to indicate the size. I recommend the etrailer Ball Mount Kit # 989899 which comes with a 1-7/8" and 2" ball and will fit a 2" receiver. Make sure you confirm which hitch ball you need before you tow your trailer for safety reasons.
I have attached reviews of the above mentioned products for your reference.
