Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Video Transcript for Kenda Tires and Wheels - Tire with Wheel - AM30110 Review

Today, we're going to be talking about part number: AM30110 - the Kenda 5.7 X 8 Bias Trailer Tire on 8" Galvanized Wheel. This wheel has a galvanized finish offering superior rust-resistance. It measures 8" in diameter by 3-3/4" wide. It has a 5 on 4-12" bolt pattern, and there are a few ways you can get these dimensions. It has 5 lug holes, and if you draw a circle through the center of each of the 5 lug holes, and measure the diameter of that circle, you get your 4-1/2". You can also measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the very next, giving you 2-5/8".

When you use the chart found on our information page, you know that that is a 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern. The wheel has a capacity of 910 lbs. and the bolt holes are 1/2" X 20" bolt size. One more piece of information that you'll need to know is the pilot diameter. This is the hole in the center of the wheel, which will go over the hub of the axle.

This wheel has a 2.8" pilot diameter. Now, moving on to the tire: this is a Loadstar tire measuring 5.7 X 8". It has an outside diameter of 18". It has a load range B, 4-ply rating, giving it a maximum load of 715 lbs at 50 psi. It is of bias construction, which means that the belts within the tire run the length of the tire.

This wheel and tire combo comes with a limited two-year warranty. And that does it for part number: AM30110. .

Great deal on a product I was having trouble finding locally (size). Finding your site on-line and ordering from you saved me a lot of footwork also. Had the new tires and rims at my door in a little over a week, only that long because they were back ordered. Great job!
Thanks,
Gary

The tires and rims are doing great. Confused about 4 star rating, thought I clicked 5. You guys are great also. Thanks for asking.

by:

The wheels are exactly what I needed and could not find locally for my boat trailer. The price for the two tires was excellent, especially when there was no shipping costs. I am very happy with my order and it's timely arrival.

by:

Staff was very helpful and knowledgeable, couldn't find any better prices, largest sleection.

by:

I installed the tires, and they fit perfectly. The old tires had the same numbers on the sidewall, but your tire/rim combo were larger in diameter which raised my unit about two inches. This was good because ground clearance has always been an issue!! It would have cost the same $$ to put new tires on my old rims locally.
Thanks,
Will Bowker

Best deal I could find, cheaper and better than the tires a dealer wanted to mount on my old rusted rims! (and free shipping)
Great service when I ordered the wrong size the lady correcting the order was able to straighten up my mess in a few minutes and intercepted the wrong order while it was being shipped! wow someone went way beyond to help someone who clicked on the wrong wheels before his first cup of coffee early in the A.M. Excellent PLUS service

by:

Had these for one year and tires and rims have exceeded all expectations. These are used on a John boat trailer and in saltwater

by:

Free shipping and arrived quick, the tires even came installed on the rim and full of air so that saved me some time. The tires look really good and seem to be nice quality. Galvanized finish looks great too. Very happy.

by:

Tires were great, used for my jet ski trailer. No issues to report and have run well on the highway.

by:

Perfect. Received the three wheels Friday, just in time for the weekend. Good quality and their installed on the boat trailer as we talk.

by:

Great wheel and tire, and will order another for a spare.

by:

I haven't had them put on yet but they look great and I received them in record time. I think I will be ordering from etrailer again.

by:

Slight delay in shipping due to the manufacturer shortage. They did a superb job of letting me know and offering alternatives. Great job

  • Fit and Compatibility of 4.80/4.00-8 Trailer Tire on Waverunner Trailer Equipped with 5.70-8 Tires
It sounds like your waverunner trailer has the 5.70-8 trailer tire on it. The smaller 4.80/4.00-8 Bias Tires # AM30070 you referenced would fit your 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern but may not be compatible with the weight rating of your trailer and waverunner. The Load Range C # AM30070 has a capacity of 760lbs at 90psi for a total axle weight of 1,520lbs. If your trailer and waverunner are within these limits then this combination could work for you. Keep in mind that you will also lose...

  • Recommending a Hub Assembly for a 4 x 8 Trailer
Thank you for taking the time to make all those measurements, it is a big help. Based on the info you provided, you will need the Trailer Idler Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb Axles # AKIHUB-545-2-G-1K. This assembly has a galvanized finish and can fit 8 inch to 12 inch wheels to accommodate your 4 x 8 trailer. Since you would like to switch to a smaller wheel and tire, I recommend taking a look at the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" Galvanized Wheel # AM30110. The 8-inch wheel fits your...

  • Compatibility of Trailer Tires with 4 Bolts
We do not carry any wheels with a 4 x 3-3/4 inch bolt pattern. The 4 on 4 inch option like the Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire with 8" White Wheel # AM30153 is 4 inches from center of wheel lug hole to center of wheel lug hole. If you are measuring between the holes instead of center on center that would account for the difference. The only diameters that you should be measuring is the outer diameter of the tire which in this case is 18 inches and the pilot hole diameter which is only...

  • Can 4.80/4.00-8 Boat Trailer Tire & 5 on 4-1/2 Wheel be Upgraded to Larger Tire
It may be possible, depending on how much clearance you have - with trailer tires, the general rule of thumb is you want at least 3" of clearance from the top of the tire to your fender and at least 1" of clearance between the inside of the tire and your trailer's frame rail. A 4.80/4.00-8 tire measures 16.1" diameter when inflated and 4.7" wide, so if you have the clearance you can go to a 5.70-8 tire which is 18" diameter and 5.8" wide, and there are three different load ranges to choose...

  • Speed Rating For Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30110
The speed rating for The Kenda 5.70-8 Bias Trailer Tire # AM30110 is 65 MPH at 50 psi. It does have a lower speed rating because it is a Bias tire and more for agricultural use then highway use. For a highway use tire you could use The Kenda Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire # AM31990.This tire is a Radial Tire and is meant for highway use which is 81 MPH at 70 psi, and has a speed rating M. The Loadstar wheel and tire combo # AM30150 has a speed rating of 65 mph. I attached...
