Video Transcript for Curt Safety Chains and Cables - Safety Chains - C19749 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number C19749. These are the Curt Safety Chains with latching safety hooks, spring-loaded to prevent accidental disconnecting. You're going to get 2 chains with this part number. Now, safety chains are designed to ensure safe towing. That's going to provide the backup connection between the trailer and the tow vehicle in the event that the coupler would come disconnected from your hitch ball. One of the neat things that makes these chains a little bit different compared to some other ones out there is that you can see here on the links that it's not the exposed steel. We're actually going to have a nice black, vinyl coating over the links to ensure no scratches on the vehicle, on the trailer, or the coupler, or anything in that area.

That's a great advantage to have. Again, you're going to have the nice large hooks. One end is going to connect to the tow vehicle safety loops. The other end's going to connect to the safety loops on your trailer. They have the spring-loaded safety latch that's going to keep from accidental disconnecting.

That's a great advantage and feature to have as well. These are going to offer a weight capacity of 5,000 pounds. Each chain is going to give us an overall length of 60 inches. That is including the hooks. The chain length diameter is going to measure 1/4 of an inch, but with that vinyl coating on there, it kind of thickens that up, and it measures more like 9/16 of an inch. Again, with this part number you're going to get 2 safety chains.

That's going to do it for our review of part number C19749.

Love the lamination makes things look finished. Hope they never get tested.

Chain lamination is still intact and no rust on hooks. Have not been around salt water yet but it still gets hosed off every time it goes to the lake.

I'm using these as a safety chain for a vehicle on a tow dolly. The vinyl coating will ensure they don't scratch the wheels of our Jeep. I did have an issue (not the fault of the product) with the size of the hooks--they are too small to hook to the ratchet bar on the dolly. I bought a couple 11,000 lb hook and bolted them to the dolly to solve the problem.

These are great. Nice clips on ends for attaching. Love the coating on the chains, look much better than my old ones. I do not care for cables, feel much better with chains.

See what our Experts say about this CURT Trailer Safety Chains

  • Recommended Safety Chains for Use with Curt Ball Mount
We cannot recommend drilling any holes at all into your hitch. Doing so will void the hitch warranty, potentially allow corrosion to invade the drilled area and also reduce the hitch tube capacity by some unknown amount. A better and safer solution is longer safety chains. All of our safety chain/safety cable products are shown on the linked page, including items like # C19749 from Curt, which are longer than many at 60-inches.

  • Can Hooks be Easily Removed from Curt Safety Chains # C19749
If you were to remove a hook from # C19749 the chains would be shorter. The only way to remove a hook, other than cutting the chain, would be to bend the "eye" end (where the chain connects to the hook) so you could then slide the chain off the long way. You couldn't go the short way because the keeper is riveted on. Are you looking for a specific chain length?

  • Is Curt Coated Safety Chains part # C19749 Sold In Pairs or Individually
We only offer the Curt Coated Safety Chains part # C19749 as a pair. There isn't a way to order it individually.

  • Troubleshooting Bend In Trailer Frame and Safety Chain Length
Your safety chains would not cause your trailer frame to bend like you pictured even if the safety chains are barely long enough to attach. It would be wise to get longer safety chains, but you would need to have amazingly strong chains, bolts, and hitch chain loops to cause your trailer frame to bend before the other parts failed. It looks like someone jack knifed the trailer to cause a bend like that. The good news is the back side of that frame rail still looks straight and will most...

  • Can Chains be Connected to Curt Hitch Extender
There is not a place for safety chains to connect to the 18" Curt Extender for 2" Receivers # C45796 so you would need to get new safety chains as well; I have added a link to our selection of safety chains for you to check out such as the 60" # C19749. Keep in mind you will need Pin and Clip # C21510 in order to attach the extender to your current hitch, and that an extender is going to reduce the capacity of your current trailer hitch by 50 percent.

  • Are Curt Safety Chains Reliable And Safe For Use On A Trailer?
You are correct that the Curt safety chains like the Curt Safety Chains with Latching Hooks # C19749 are made over seas, but that does not mean they are not still a quality part. Quite a few manufacturers of chains actually use products from over seas. With that said the Curt # C19749 still meets the expectations of what you expect from a Curt products and I would not be hesitate to use them on a trailer. You will want to make sure that the chains meet or exceed the GVWR of your trailer....

  • Availability of Curt Safety Chains With Latching Hooks Longer Than 60 Inches
The longest available Curt safety chains are the Curt Safety Chains with Latching Hooks - 60" Long - 5,000 lbs - Qty 2 # C19749 that you looked at. The longest safety chains we have available are 72" safety chains. If you would like some with the snap hooks like the Curt, we have the Titan Chain 72" Long Safety Chain with 1/4" S-Hook with Latch - 5,000 lbs - Qty 1 # TCTSCG30-772-04x2. • Recommended Trailer Hitch Extension for 2004 Ford F-350 with Truck Bed Camper Towing a Trailer
Hitch extensions over 18 inches aren't very common because of the stress and torque they put on the trailer hitch and vehicle frame. For a 30 inch extension, the first place we will want to start is with your truck's trailer hitch. In order to find an extension this long, you must have a Class V trailer hitch with a 2-1/2 inch hitch opening. If you don't already have a Class V hitch, then I recommend the Curt Class V Trailer Hitch, # C15810, because with this hitch you can use the Curt...

  • Safety Chains and Cargo Tie Downs for 6 x 10-Foot Flat Deck Utility Trailer
Thank you for the photo of your utility trailer that appears to already have safety chains installed near the coupler. Safety chains should be selected based on trailer weight and on the length you need. If your trailer has a 3500-lb-rated axle then chains like 60-inch 5K Curt part # C19749 would provide sufficient capacity and their latching hooks will make for easy attachment. If you prefer shorter chains you might prefer the 27-inch 5K # 2118-605-04. For a weld-on bracket you might...
