Video Transcript for Buyers Products Class 4 Trailer Safety Chain Review

Hello neighbors, It's Brad here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Buyer's Products 3/8s by 22 inch safety chain with clevis style hook. Your safety chain on a trailer is required in most states and honestly, this is a safe way to make sure just in case the ball isn't actually attached or your trailer becomes unattached. This is gonna make sure that it stays on to your vehicle and not roll down the highway causing not only damage but potentially safety issues for not only you, but other passerbys. And this one here is rated at 10,000 pounds of weight capacity. So it's gonna be extremely heavy duty. And part of that has to do with our 3/8s clevis style hook, spring loaded.

So it's really nice once you hook it on you don't have to worry about if it bops off, it's gonna hold on 'cause our spring loaded here, it's gonna make sure that it stays locked on to our hitch. Now our link diameter is gonna be three eighths of an inch. So this is extremely heavy duty. Another thing is it's got a zinc coating on it. So it's gonna prevent your safety chains from looking like the ones that we're placed on here.

So you can see this one has seen better days and this attachment point here it twist locks on, which is great, but it's kind of a pain when you're putting it on and off the trailer. I like to be pretty quick as I'm bending down. So this is a great way to do that with our clevis style hook, especially being this heavy duty. Another thing too, being 22 inches, you're gonna wanna make sure that where you're attaching onto your coupler, that it's gonna reach on the tow vehicle. So I would suggest measuring, make sure that you get the right length, but this should cover most of it.

Now, something else that you need to realize is this is just a quantity of one. So when ordering it you're gonna want to get a matching one. So a quantity of two, that way you have corresponding chains. And remember when hooking up to your hitch you're gonna want to cross those over. Now as far as installation goes, it's gonna be pretty standard on most trailers.

There's gonna be a hole that you're gonna run hardware through. Now I suggest using something that's zinc coded or stainless. That way that's gonna maintain that nice look but also strength from corrosion happening on the hardware. Now I also recommend having a nylon lock nut. That's gonna hold that in place. Even as you're bouncing down the road, it's not gonna loosen up over time and having some washers to really span the diameter of the chain link to make sure that it's on their secure. Your safety chains on your trailer are gonna be required when towing but it's not to say you have to be stuck with some old rusty chains. You can actually upgrade to something a little bit stronger and also just the attachment that we currently have, every time that you want to attach, you're simply twisting and twisting, which when it's hooked into the safety chain loop on the hitch, sometimes it can be a little bit cumbersome depending on the vehicle. So we're gonna upgrade to a clevis style with a spring loaded clip. It's gonna make it nice and easy to just clip on and be ready to go. We're also gonna be adding a little bit of length as well. And you can obviously tell it looks a little bit better because well, these have seen better days and it's also gonna be heavier duty. So to get your old ones off, generally, these are gonna be bolted in near the coupler area. So ours, we just have an old nylon lock nut with a bolt going up. So I'll go ahead, get these taken off. If your hardware that's attaching your chain to the coupler is rough, it might be a good time to also upgrade that and to break these loose, you might need to soak it in penetrating oil to kind of get this working that way you don't run the risk of breaking the bolt. But with this old one out, we can put our new one on and we'll see pretty quickly the difference between the two. So I'll be using some new hardware here and make sure that you have a washer that's large enough to span this 'cause as we tighten it it can kind of start to crimp down and we wanna make sure that the chain obviously stays attached. So we'll go ahead and get our new hardware passed through. I'm also gonna put a washer on the other side and the nylon locknut here. Now the hardware is not included so you're gonna have to pick some up. So I suggest going to the hardware store and try to find a size that's gonna work well for your trailer. So now with our new one in place we can absolutely see the difference. We did get that little bit of extra length there and just again, hooking up with this clevis hook is gonna be so much easier and this is extremely heavy duty. So something else to consider is check your safety chain loops to make sure that this is gonna fit. And that was a look and installation of the Buyer's Products, 3/8s by 22 inch, safety chain with clevis style hook, but it's class four..

I purchased these safety chains to add to the trailer tongue extension I built for my sailboat trailer so the rig can be backed in further in the water. My rig weighs 10,000 lbs and these chains give me peace of mind that anything that can go wrong, won't go wrong. etrailer has great product selection and the product description makes it easy to make decisions on the best application.
