Video Transcript for Ramp Springs Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install ramp springs for the 2000 pound torque rate for inch and a half shafts. The left hand side is part number RS16933LH, and for the right, you'll need part number RS16933RH.Now, these springs are designed to aid you in lowering and lifting these heavy ramps. If you don't have any springs installed, you know it can be quite a bit of a pain. As you're lowering your ramp down, you kind of have to be under it. You don't want to just let it drop .. Well, I guess you can, but you might cause damage to it, and vice versa. When you're trying to lift it up, you're going to lift up the entire weight.

With the springs installed, they've got a 2000 pound tension rating, so as we lower the gate, as we raise the gate, it's going to be much, much easier. Now, this is what I would call a medium/heavy duty utility type trailer. We'll also show you on a very heavy duty utility type trailer, the use of two of them for those much larger ramps, the triangulated style ramps. Those tend to be a lot heavier, so we'll show you that, as well.Just to give you an idea, however your ramp's held in place, you'll want to, of course, unsecure that, and then you'll see our ramp's going to come down much easier. It actually kind of floats there. We'll push that down.

That'll keep it closer to the ground. We can get our equipment on and off, then when it's time to shut them back up, much easier process than what you're probably used to, especially if you don't have springs, or if your current springs aren't in good working order. You can see our old spring. It's become worn, and it's not near as effective as it was. You see how that's pointing off, kind of in that rearward direction It just means it's been fatigued over time, so we're going to be able to replace it with a new spring. It's going to give us much more effect. Now, the left hand and right hand is going to determine which side of the pin you're going to be putting it on.

If you want it on the right side, you want a right hand spring, and if it's going on the left side, you're going to want your left hand spring. To ensure we get years of great service out of the ramp springs, they're made of a high quality alloy spring steel, so they're going to return to their original position for years and years. To ensure you have plenty of room, we're going to go over the specifications of the spring, just to give you an idea about the size. From outside of our spring to outside of our spring, we've got 2 1/2 inches. Inside and inside's going to be about and inch and a half. From the spring itself, to the end of each arm that sticks out, is going to be 4 inches, so you definitely want to keep that in mind, and make sure that you've got clearance for that, and also that, that spring will make contact with something within that 4 inch range. To begin your installation, you'll need to remove whatever's holding in your hinge pin. It's going to be the large inch and a half diameter pin that runs through here.

In our case, we've got a bolt and a nylon lock washer. We're going to use a 9/16 to get that removed. You also want to hang on to your hardware, because you're going to need this to put it back in. It keeps this pin from sliding in and out. You can see our old spring mounted here. We'll move our pin out, and the idea is to free that up. Now, this ramp's going to be very heavy, and when you pull that pin, it's going to want to fall down. You need somebody to give you a hand, or if you can handle it yourself, however you want to do it, just make sure, as you pull this pin, that, that doesn't fall down and hurt you. Now, we can remove that old spring, set it aside, and replace it with our new one. Now, we're going to be putting our spring on the other side. We've got an accommodation for one here or here, so it doesn't matter how you want to do it. Make sure you get it where you need it, though. Then, our gate hinge is going to go right in between there. As we install it, we can place that pin through. Now, as we replace our ramp onto the trailer, and install our pin, of course, we want to ensure that the pin passes through the middle of our spring, and we also want to make sure that the flange on the ramp goes in between the spring and the flange on our trailer. Now, to finish it up, we'll just reinstall the hardware that we removed to take that old one off.As we said, with these really heavy ramps, they look about the same as the other ones, but they're much thicker steel. It really is a problem, when it comes time to lower them. You're going to have to fight it. You're really going to have to put weight into it, and it can be slightly dangerous. If you have anything underneath there without steel toes on, you'll likely run into something. Same way, going up. Just make sure you get a good hold it.Then, you're putting yourself right underneath them, so if you we're to slip or your hand comes off, it can come back at you. Those springs are going to help us out a lot, with that situation. Now, just like before, we're pulling that pin out, although this time, we don't have any keepers to put it in, so we'll slide this one on, just like that, bring the pin in, a little further, we can get our other one put on.After we have our springs installed, there's a huge difference in the operation of our ramp. We'll go through that same process as before. You could see it actually hold my ramp there. At that point, we just need to press it down a little bit. That's going to make it much easier getting our equipment up and on it.Now, to raise it up, it takes a lot less effort, as well.Overall, our ramps are going to be much easier to use, but a big key is, they're also going to be much safer. That'll complete our look at the ramp springs.

Ramp Spring - 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Shaft - RH - RS16933RH

I think we should have ordered these many years ago. Amazing how just a little extra item can be appreciated at the beginning of and end at unloading time can make the day that much more pleasant. A real pain in the back saver/muscle relaxer. 11#'s of lift effort vs 58#. Why waste the energy doing 58 times two ramps 2 to 10 times a day when you don't have to?

by:

etrailer is our go to quick and easy place to purchase parts and accessories we need for working on customers equiptment. Great service, reasonable pricing, and fast shipping.

by:

Ships fast. Works great

by:

Seems to be good quality. It's a spring. Works as it should.

by:

We put 2 of these on each ramp, works great, could almost use a 3rd one.

by:

could not function with out these . had to double up for some heavier ramps and they help lift them with one handle great item.

by:

Heavy gates need a good set of springs to save your back! This product works great.

by:

These ramp springs really took the work out of raising and lowering my heavy 3 fold ramps needed for a more long and level approach to our 10 ton trailer. I always looked for help when needing to raise them, now I can almost do it with one hand. It took a little work installing them because the old system had to be rebuilt somewhat. I kept the same 1" pins and used a 1 1/16" ID X 1 1/2" OD sleeve for the springs to work on. They were well worth my time. I`d rate this an excellent product.

by:

The ramps on my equipment trailer were very heavy for me to lift as my back is not what it used to be. My son hurt his back and it was hard for both of us to lift the ramps. We received two springs on Friday and installed them Saturday morning. It took about 5 minutes per side maybe. What a difference, I can now lift the ramps off the ground with one finger. They really helped, thanks so much for sharing the [installation] video that I watched and that prompted me to try these.

Its still working great. Best and easiest thing we ever did to improve the trailer. No more strained backs

by:

I had to have 2 back surgeries, and I was not to pick up hardly any weight for a number of weeks. I had a neighbor help me install the ramp springs. After that I was able to lift the ramps with almost no effort at all. I am very glad I got the springs.

by:

They were easy to install on my car hauling trailer. They are ok, but maybe I should have bought heaver springs. However, I think these will work. One of my old springs was bent when I bought the trailer. I wanted to replace them both, and have the same tension on both ramps. My are stand up ramps. Thanks. Don C Kokomo, IN.46902

The new springs have been a great help to me. At 74 and getting a bit weak, Ha Ha they are a welcome addition to my trailer. Thanks. I just bought a new RV light plug end to replace the old one. Havent gotten it yet, but am looking forward to installing it. The old one shorted out. Etrailer has been a great place to buy the items I need. Thanks again Etrailer.

by:

Need two on each side… one is not enough

by:

Just installed two of these springs last night on our truck's tailgate. Time will tell how well they hold up. Installation was easy, as we were replacing two springs that had failed after several years of use.

One of the springs broke. Waiting on the other to break before changing out again.

by:

The existing spring on my fold up ramps were not enough to raise the ramp easily. I added this spring to the ramp and it works great.

I’ve dealt with many companies online, etrailer is one of the best out there. I’ve bought many products from etrailer and the parts are reliable and so is costumer service. I always get the parts very quickly and have never been disappointed. Good job y’all!

by:

Everything I get from etrailer is always top quality and delivery is fast. This spring will save my back as I have an extremely heavy gate.

Unfortunately I am working on a return. I am happy with etrailer. I have been getting great responses nice people. The item want work unfortunately and doesn’t look like you carry the size I need.
Thank you

My 16 ft mower trailer is loaded with tools from the shop rebuild so I have been having to use my 20 ft implement trailer to haul my sub compact tractor on when mowing the in-laws yard. The ramps are very heavy which was never a problem for occasional use but doing it multiple times a week was getting old so I went looking for a solution. These springs were easy to install and made all the difference in the world. The trailer is now much more user friendly. Wish I had bought them years ago.

by:

Heavy duty springs worked great. I was thinking about using hydraulics to raise and lower my trailer ramps until I found out about these springs from etrailer.com.

I recommend this product, worked great!!!!!

by:

Great service! Second time I've ordered parts, and I am VERY impressed with the service. Ordered, and received the next day!
Don't know how you can ask for anything better.

still on and still functioning, which is all thats needed

by:

I have purchased this same item in the past without any problems. Naturally I thought I would purchase the same item again. They are easy to install and if I need to preload the spring (I usually have slight pressure on the spring when the ramp is straight up) I do this by welding the right size diameter pipe or rod under the tail of the spring. This works fine.. I have already painted them black and ready to pop them on. I would highly recommend the springs for any tailgate or ramp installation. Might also say the package arrived in four days.

by:

I installed these on my trailer with a 4' split ramps. They are great as I can pick the ramp up with one finger and move them into place. Great product.

by:

Good strong springs. Great quality. A+

by:

Theese work to good. I have a 14k gooseneck and the ramps will only drop to a 45 angle. Spring is a little too strong. For 7 ton trailer ramps made of 3 in channel. I plan on modifing the ramps which should fix it.

by:

Product was as described & fit was good. Delivery was faster than stated. Will require some mods to trailer to gain the best benefit from springs. Will order from etrailer in the future for my trailer needs.

  • Spring Options for a Toy Hauler Ramp
We have springs for your 2006 RPM Toy Hauler's door. I've linked to a list of them below. To choose which one is the right one for you, you will need to know the width of your ramp and its weight. I could not find these specifications for your ramp online, but it should be easy enough for you to do. Simply measure and weigh. If you don't have a scale, you can use something like the etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale, part # e99044. I've linked to a video review of this scale below...

The right hand ramp spring, item # RS16933RH, and the left hand spring, item # RS16933LH, are differentiated by paint on the springs from the manufacturer. The springs with green paint on them are right side springs, left side springs are unpainted. Right side springs will go on the right side of a ramp and left hand springs go on the left side of a ramp. Both right and left hand springs deflect in the same direction the designation of right and left has to do with orientation of the stick...

  • Ramp Spring that Fits 1-1/2 inch Diameter Shaft with Higher Torque Rating
The largest size trailer ramp spring we have would be the part # RS16933LH for the left hand side and # RS16933RH for the right hand side which fits 1-1/2 inch diameter shafts and is rated for 2k ft lbs torque. We do not have anything that would fit over a 2 inch shaft.

For the ramps of your load trail 20 ft trailer we have ramps springs like the part # RS16933RH for the right hand side and the # RS16933LH for the left hand side but your ramps would need to be on a 1-1/2 inch shaft for these to fit. With your over head garage door springs frequently breaking you may not have the correct capacity springs for your door. We have kits that range from 80LBS # M374FR up to 250LBS # CB250D96SHD. The weight rating is not the door weight but the amount of force required to raise the door at any given point. The easiest way to check this is with a scale while raising the door. • Ramp Springs for a Trailer with Two 8' Ramps
It sounds like you have a utility/equipment trailer with two 8' ramps. The only springs that we have that will work for that style are the Ramp Spring - 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Shaft # RS16933RH (for Right Hand) and # RS16933LH (for Left Hand). These springs will work with shafts that are 1-1/2" and they have 2,000 lbs. of torque. I have included a video that reviews these springs and shows an installation for you to check out.

The Redline Ramp Spring you referenced, part # RS16933LH, and the matching right-hand spring, part # RS16933RH, are intended primarily for use on equipment trailers, such as those used to transport a skid loader for example, not for utility-type trailers. These springs have an inside coil diameter of approximately 1-1/2-inches (and are intended for a 1-1/2-inch shaft). The wire diameter as measured with a digital caliper is 0.465 inches. • Will the Ramp Springs Part RS16933LH and Part RS16933RH Work With a 200 Lb Ramp
Yes, the Ramp Spring part # RS16933LH for the left hand side and part # RS16933RH for the right hand side would work well with a 200 lb ramp. So long as the diameter of your shaft is 1-1/2" you will be good to go.

  • Ramp Springs for Flatbed Car Hauler Trailer with 220-lb Ramp
For your 82-inch wide ramp whose weight you estimate at about 220-lbs, the 2K ramp springs # RS16933LH and # RS16933RH should work well as long as you have a 1-1/2-inch round shaft to match the springs' inside diameter. If you check out the linked video on these items you'll see that they worked well on smaller ramps that were a bit lighter than your ramp will be. Since the springs provided a bit more tension than necessary in that application they should be perfect for yours.

  • Trailer Ramp Springs for a 20 Ton Tandem Axle Trailer
That sounds like a very heavy duty trailer. For heavy duty trailers there are special ramp springs, # RS16933RH for right hand side and # RS16933LH for left hand side. They fit a 1-1/2 inch diameter shaft or hinge pin. We do not have a pin that large. I have included a link to a video review of the springs for you. The other springs we carry are all lighter duty for enclosed consumer trailers and probably would not be strong enough to fit your 20 ton trailer.

  • Recommended Ramp Springs For Heavy Equipment Trailer
The Redline Ramp Spring like part # RS16933RH and part # RS16933LH will help with lifting the ramps you said you are building for your trailer. I would recommend 1 spring for each ramp. These springs are made of steel alloy, these springs provide approximately 90 degrees of deflection and are designed to help lift a ramp with 2,000 pounds of torque.

For a door/ramp that is on a 1-1/4 inch shaft the part # RS16933LH and # RS16933RH would be a great choice. These ramps provide 2,000 lbs of torque which would be needed for a ramp that weighs as much as yours and is as long as yours. The spring is designed for a 1-1/2 inch shaft, but we have checked before and have been told that it will still work fine on a 1-1/4 inch shaft as well.

  • Availability of Replacement Ramp Springs for 6" Ramp Springs
The closest springs that we have to what you are looking for are the 4" springs # RS16933LH for the left hand side and # RS16933RH for the right hand side. These are rated for 2,000 ft/lbs and will do a good job at helping you lift your ramps. I would try checking to see what your current springs are rated for as well. If you have an older trailer then it could be that they are simply wearing out but if it is a newer trailer then you may need springs that are more heavy duty.

  • Replacement Trailer Door Ramp Spring Options
We do not carry the spring only for torsion springs on trailer doors. But we do carry the replacement assembly. I have included a link to the options for you to the right. Springs # RS16933LH or # RS16933RH would not work since they are designed for very heavy duty trailer ramps.

When selecting ramp springs for a trailer ramp, you will want to know the diameter of your hinge pin and how much space you have available in the hinge. They will do a great job helping you lifting and lowering with 2,000 lbs of torque. I recommend starting with one of each on each side and adding more if necessary. These are designed to fit a 1-1/2" shaft for installation.

These springs are designed for 1-1/2 inch diameter pins. The springs have 2,000 lbs of torque, so they should be able to handle your 300 lb ramps with no problem. I would only use one on each ramp and see how it performs before adding a second spring. If you send me a photo of your ramps and how they are attached to...

We have several hinge pins like # HP412G that I have linked for you, but it sounds like you need actual springs. We have some heavy duty ramp springs like # RS16933RH and # RS16933LH if you happen to have a heavy duty equipment trailer like what they haul tractors and other large equipment on. For an open utility trailer you may be able to use a tailgate assist like # RA-27C. Or for an enclosed trailer we have springs that are similar to garage door systems. I have linked those as well....

  • Do Left & Right Hand Trailer Springs Have to be Mounted on Left or Right Hand Sides
You will indeed need to place the left hand ramp spring on the left hand side (the driver's side) and the right hand ramp spring on the right hand side (the passenger's side) in order for the springs to properly mount and wind. We do have both left hand and right hand springs so you will need to get one for each side: - Left Hand Side: Ramp Spring # RS16933LH - Right Hand Side: Ramp Spring # RS16933RH I have added a link below to a video review of these springs for you to check out as well.

  • How to Choose the Correct Ramp Spring for a Trailer
A ramp door spring rated for 4k in/lbs of torque is going to offer more assistance than a ramp door spring rated for 2k in/lbs of torque. However, choosing the highest rated door spring available is not in your best interest. If the spring was rated too high then the ramps would more or less have a mind of their own and will be very jerking when lifting and lowering. If the spring was rated too low then it would not offer enough assistance and the ramps would feel very heavy and difficult...

  • Lift Assist Recommendations for Trailer Ramp Gate
For a spring I recommend using the Redline ramp springs Right Hand # RS16933RH or Left Hand # RS16933LH depending on what your application calls for. These are designed for trailer ramps and are rated for 2,000 lbs so you know they will work properly. Since you mentioned a gate you might be interested in the Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist w/ Chain # RA-27C instead as it's meant for smaller ramps on utility trailers. The left and right ramps springs # RS16933LH and # RS16933RH install on a shaft of 1-1/2-inches diameter. The width of the coil is 2-1/2-inches and the overall length of each spring is 11-inches. You can refer to the linked videos and to the linked photo from a customer that shows how these springs need to be installed on the shaft. The springs may not always have a color indicated but the photo shows which goes on which side.
