As other reviewers have said, the hitch is probably 1/4” too narrow so you have to force it up onto the frame rails. On top of that, the side bolt holes dont line up. Etrailer is going to tell you “the hitch is flexed here’s a faq on how to fix”…no. The hitch is 1/4” steel and is not flexed, it’s just bad machining tolerances on curt’s part.. I had to spend about 45 minutes filing down the frame side bolt holes to get the side bolts in on the passenger side. Overall the hitch fits, but took me about 5 hours due to all these setbacks. FYI, it did fit on my 2020 Mustang GT with active exhaust - but you will have to bend the clips a little on the muffler valves.

For some additional information, hitches are made with a mild flex for towing purposes. If that steel does not have the ability to flex when on a vehicle, potholes, hills, dips in the road, driveways, uneven ground, etc. can cause the unbendable steel to obtain stress fractures. Once there are stress fractures in the steel, then the hitch is no longer sturdy and useable for safe towing. I can understand the confusion in this and also understand that it is a pain in the rear to have to bend it back into place. If you ever receive a hitch with flexed brackets and do not want to deal with the hassle of getting it straight again, then you can always contact us to request a replacement hitch, and we would be happy to get you a replacement.

It’s well built and heavy. The only negative thing was it came scratched up. It kind of makes me think that this is a postal damage or was this thing on another vehicle at one point. I’m just waiting for the installation. Now I’ll have to buy matching touch up paint as well.

The hitch design is great and hardly visible when standing next to the car. However the install process is quite tedious. It took my friend and I over 4 hours to install with all of the tools needed. The 4 side holes ended up being misaligned to the frame holes by 2-3mm and there's no way to pull the bolts through without filing down the frame holes. Also removing the wire pullers were a little tricky since we didn't want to risk dropping a bolt back inside the frame. It's definitely a 2 person job where 1 person pushes it up and make minor adjustment while the other pull the bolts through the holes. I really wish etrailer still offered shipping to a installer near me and professional installation as an option. (They used to offer such a service when I installed a hitch on my last car)

Thank you for your review. It sounds like your hitch was a bit flexed. I will attach a help article about that. Also, etrailer installs items only at our Missouri location. It is very limited on schedules though.

by:
2015 Ford Mustang

Curt hitches are better looking to me with their bent tube design compared to other brands. This hitch needs to be installed very level when pushing it up on the frame because (1) the frame rail is tapered and (2) the hitch mounting is very tight on the frame. I use it for a light duty 4' x 8' trailer, and a hitch-style bike rack & ski rack.

I dont use it often, but its great to have when I need it. The hitch is long enough

I dont blame you! When you buy something brand new, it should arrive looking that way. I want to assure you that reselling used products is not our policy. I will have our customer service team reach out to you about this.

by:

I have mixed feelings about the hitch. While the hitch is solidly designed designed, the tight machining tolerances on the hitch’s bolt holes made it almost impossible to thread the bolts through all 8 when the hitch was in place. Following the directions to the letter (this wasn’t my first hitch installation). It took an hour of adjusting, readjusting, tightening and loosening to get all the bolts through.

That however was less of my issue. My bigger issue is that after squaring the hitch with the frame and torquing to specs, the receiver sits 1/2 inch off center with the car, and has an axis tilt to the left. Nothing I tried would get it to sit centered, and the axis tilt appears to be a welding accuracy issue. It’s clearly visible in the photo below, and causes my bicycle rack to sit tilted.

After everything it took to get the hitch on the car properly, and square with the frame, it is disappointing that the receiver is not centered and straight.

Thank you for your review. The tolerances for the bolts that you mentioned sounds like it may be the result of your trailer hitch flexing. It sounds like you were able to get it installed, but for reference, here is a helpful article about flexed hitches.

Easy to install, the bolt finders are a great idea and makes it easy to do. I did it alone on jackstands, but a second person would be helpful when lining up the holes.

One year in and no issues whatsoever. Once its installed its rock solid.

by:
2016 Ford Mustang

The hitch looks great and functions perfectly, but I'm docking 1 star because installation was quite difficult. I mean what a battle! I'm reasonably strong, but the fit on this thing is way too tight. Maybe the tolerances were off on mine? I ended up clamping the hitch to a 3-ton floor jack, and I used the weight of the vehicle to force the hitch into place. Not the safest thing in the world. If I had to do it over again I think I would remove the exhaust completely starting from the resonator out to the tip. This would provide clearance to push the hitch onto the subframe one side at a time with a floor jack, something that you can't do if you follow the standard install procedure because the muffler is in the way. Good luck!

by:

The Curt hitch is well made. It fit my '17 Mustang like a glove and I do mean glove. The fish wires for the bolts can be a little tricky, but they work. I made a wood jig to hold the hitch on a floor jack while doing the install by myself, on the ground and I'm 70.

Easy install of a great trailer hitch. Never had an issue

by:

I’ve owned this hitch hot a year now and it is still worth every penny. It was easy to install. The main purpose was to install a bike rack as I do not like those strap on ones that damage your finish. Overall this was a great buy and it doesn’t make the mustang look funny either.

by:

Great hitch, installation was a breeze. I would recommend an extra person to help hold the hitch in place while installing the bolts. I've had zero issues towing my trailer 500 plus miles around trip.

by:
2018 Ford Mustang

I installed this on a 2018 GT. 60 minute installation time. The only issue was I have the Active Valve Performance Exhaust and the clips had to be moved to the back of the sensor to attach it back to the frame. Minor adjustment. Use will be for a bike rack. Recently installed a Curt hitch on our other car for a bike rack. Works great.

by:

Install was a little bit of a pain but expected but was having trouble with getting the top bolts through like only one side lined up but got 6 of the 8 in so it works and had no problem towing

Are the bolt holes off by one half an inch or less? It sounds like that the side brackets may be flexed and if that is the case then it can be corrected. Please see the FAQ below. This is something that is not always common, however does happen occasionally. It is recommended to use all the bolt holes as it could lead to hitch failure if they are not.

Great product. I’m 69 years old and easily installed by myself laying on cardboard with the car on ramps. Used tie downs to hold up close to frame.

2019 Ford Mustang

I am very pleased with my purchase, I installed it all by myself but I wish I had one of my friends to help me, it took a little more time and effort doing by myself ... The end result is fantastic! You can't hardly see it when the bike rack is off, and I didn't have to drill or cut on my 19 mustang GT.

by:
2016 Ford Mustang

ETrailer had a good price and prompt delivery. Curt trailer hitches are quality products. I’ve had multiple over the years. This is the first one I’ve installed on my own. Took 1 1/2hrs by myself in an every day garage on a 2016 Mustang GT with general hand tools. Install directions are vague for an every day person to understand, but i figured it out. The fish wires worked like a champ to feed the bolts through the car frame holes. Looks great and works great for me for a bike holder hitch and what not on the Mustang.

by:

Appears well engineered and manufactured. Unfortunately the installation method for the attaching bolts looks VERY complicated. A one-man install might not be possible. Will know better after I see how far I can get trying to install it.

1 yr follow up. I was able to install the hitch by myself. But it was VERY frustrating. Took 3 - 4 hours a day over 3 days to get it finished. Not including the wiring. But ... Ive used the daylights out of the hitch now that its in. I purchased an 8 ft utility a trailer a week after finishing the install and tow it about once a month. The hitch works great. Im searching for an aluminum cargo carrier to add to my towing gear. The only down side to the hitch is that its a class 1 hitch but thats all the Stang chassisbody can support. All things considered its worked out very well for my needs.

by:
Ford Flex

Installation was very difficult. The hitch tolerance to the car's frame is EXTREMELY tight, and the gauge of the hitch metal is heavy, so there is no flex in the hitch to allow spreading it a bit to ease installation. Consequently, the added thickness of the wire leads on the furnished bolt threaders, which must be threaded between the hitch and the frame, get pinched between the hitch and frame, causing severe binding.
On a lift, this would be less a problem, but on your back on a garage floor, with limited clearance and mobility, the binding is a major issue.
I estimate dealing with this added hours to my installation time.
The mfg could have solved this problem by machining 1/32- 1/16 deep groves in the hitch for the wires on the bolt threaders. Placing the wires in the groves during installation could avoid the wires being pinched. Installers can quickly and easily cut these groves, if they have the proper tool.

2019 Ford Mustang

Fits like a latex glove that you bought one size to small but the end result was nice. Docking one star for difficulty of install. Took me and a friend 2 hours. Installed this on a 2019 GT with active exhaust. Dropping the exhaust and fishing in the screws was easy. Getting the hitch up and mounting was the hard part. It fits so tight that the fishing wires wouldnt let you push the rack up to all the holes because they get wedged between the frame and the rack. After struggling for almost 30 mins trying to get it all lined up, we finally decided to push it up as far as we could then bolt the bottom nutes on. Then we tighten the bottom nuts all the way forcing the rack into position. This allowed us to pull the top bolts through and screw the nuts on. This rack leaves absolutely no room for error and was probably one of my hardest rack installs I have ever done. I don't think I could have done it without a friend.

Works great and carries my bike and that is what I needed. This rack will probably be on the stang for years to come. I absolutely have no plans of trying to take it off that is fore sure. Good rack!

by:

Installed almost a year ago. The install was a little challenging trying to get the wires fished thru the frame and hitch mount plates, doing so on my back with the car up on tire ramps. But once past the install the hitch works great.

2/20/2018

Yes, it has worked out fine. You have to be careful in some cases, coming out of parking lots where road meets lot and there is a , because the end of the hitch can hit pavement. But they all do that on the new Mustangs, due to height of car off the road. There is no possibility to have the hitch arm mounted higher.Other than that, its been a great hitch and looks better than the drawtight. Have had no problems with it.

2018 Ford Mustang

Thanks to the previous reviewers who noted it's a tight fit. I checked and it had to be bumped flush with a rubber mallet. Luckily I checked before running the wires. I don't believe it would have fit with the wires thru the holes. Fished the wires and bolts thru after locating the hitch. Those top two bolts in the rear muffler hangers have tight access. Would have taking forever to torque them down manually. Used an air power ratchet to install.
