Video Transcript for Gen-Y Phantom X Hitch Ball Mount Review

What's up everybody It's AJ with etrailer.com. Today we're gonna be checking out the Gen-Y Phantom X. This is going to be an adjustable ball mount with an eight and a half inch drop allowing you to adjust wherever you need the ball for different trucks and trailer sizes or heights. Let's check it out. This is what you get with the ball mount. So we have the receiver here, with the stacked receivers giving you the choice of what height you want to adjust it for.

Really easy to just pull the pin clip and slide it into whatever one of the receivers you want it to be for the height. Now you're gonna get this, you're not gonna get the ball that you saw earlier, so you're gonna need to order that separately. Make sure it has an inch diameter so it fits in this hole so you can tighten it up, and you can get a two inch or two and 5/16 inch, whatever one you need. But it's really about how easy it is to adjust wherever you want the ball to be. So that's height the adjustment for if it's lower.

If you got a taller truck and a lower trailer you want that to ride even. It's gonna be a great way to do that quick and easily. Now the stacked receivers give you a eight and a half inch drop, or seven inch rise. So you can flip it around, (metal scrapes) line it up this way and then you're gonna get a rise. So that way you can adjust if you need to raise it up just a little bit.

The shanks gonna fit two inch by two inch hitches. We have a reducer on our hitch today so that it's gonna work on this bigger hitch. No problems, just slide it in, line up the holes, and you're gonna put the pin and clip through. Now that's also sold separately, so you can get the standard pin and clip. We got one that matches the set that goes in accessories.

There's also some locking hitch pins from InfiniteRule that will work. So you'll put that in there and lock 'em up. I like that option cause if I'm gonna invest in this whole assembly, I wanna be able to lock this in the hitch, and then I'd go ahead and get a second one to lock in our ball over once, so that nobody can mess with anything when you're not around. Now when you order your ball separately, you're gonna make sure you get the right size, and the right diameter here on the bottom. So I'm gonna loosen up the nut and lock washer and show you. This is one inch diameter here, so you want it to fit into the accessory itself. Then you're gonna wanna put the lock washer and the nut on the bottom and then tighten and torque that down. You don't wanna leave this loose. Now I'm just gonna put it on here by hand just to show you what it looks like, (metal scrapes) so you have a better idea. If you have multiple trailers, I suggest getting another accessory from Gen-Y. We have the dual ball mount. So you're gonna have the option of the two and 5/16 or the two inch ball. One, you don't have to torque this down, it's ready to set up so, you get this as an add-on. You can slide that in. Use it on any of the receivers like you want to, still adjust the height, but now you don't have to flip, or have two of these laying around you gotta find. So you have this set up. If you're backing up to your other trailer, you already gotta adjust the height, you can adjust the ball flip around, and now you can hook up to your two and 5/16 inch coupler. The whole assembly's gonna be made out of sturdy steel construction with a black powder coat finish on it. So you don't have to worry about it rusting or corroding when you leave it on the back of the hitch. Now, it does stick out a little bit. The pins are easy enough to pull the clips and the pins to set it in the back of your truck, when not used, so it's out of the way. That way you don't have to worry about running into it when you're coming around the back of your truck. Phantom X is gonna have a sturdy steel construction. You're gonna have a black powder coat finish all over it, so you don't have to worry about it rusting or corroding, if you leave it in your hitch all the time. It's not gonna bother it. Now it does have the tongue weight rating of 700 pounds, and then it's gonna have a gross tow weight rating of 7,000 pounds, so just keep that in mind with your truck and your trailer. There's a few options when it comes to adjustable ball mounts. I know the B&W Tow & Stow is one that's compared to this as well, where it's gonna stay in line, so you can't remove the ball from the track. It just stays in line, but it also can go up underneath the truck, so it's gonna keep it outta the way when you walk around the back. So if you plan on leaving us on all the time, and you'd rather have that ability to flip it up under the truck, that's an option to look into. Now, Gen-Y also makes their own. There's the version of the Phantom that actually flips up underneath the truck, so that's an option as well. If you just wanna get this outta the way, and leave it in the hitch all the time. Well, I think that does it. Thanks for hanging out and hope it's helped.

This looks like what I wanted. Minor miss is that the picture suggests that one hitch pin is included. However, there are no pins included. This point was not real clear in the written description. I may have more to say after I try it out.

by:

like height adjustment, overall very happy with product. Only issue I had is bought cargo hauler that would not fit in hitch without driving it in but not sure a hitch problem. Good product.

by:

Really like it and think it will fit my needs

by:

Great product, the only problem I had was, had to file down corners so receiver fit inside.

by:

Beautiful function, fit and finish. The little extra length of the Hitch seems to improve hard turn backing.

by:

The friendliest service and excellent prompt delivery. Thank you very much. Happy holidays to you.

  • Can The Gen-Y Ball Mount Be Used To Lower The Ride Height For a Yakima OnRamp Bike Rack?
To lower the ride height for your Yakima OnRamp Bike Rack # Y36FR I recommend using the Stacked Receiver # 325-GH-304. The Gen-Y Phantom Hitch Ball Mount # GY27VR you found should only be used with Gen-Y towing attachments.

  • How to Get 3/4 Inch Rise with Brophy Straight Ball Mount
Thanks for the photos! It looks like you have the Brophy Ball Mount for 2" Hitches # BM20 which means you just need to remove the hitch ball, flip the ball mount over, then reinstall the hitch ball to achieve your 3/4" desired rise. Be sure to use a torque wrench like part # ALL944001 to get the hitch ball torqued to the correct specs per the manufacturer. If you need to use the ball mount in either orientation on a regular basis then I recommend checking out the Gen-Y Phantom Ball Mount...

  • Is There Incremental Drop Difference With Platform Orientation of Gen-Y Phantom X Ball Mount
The ball mount platform of the Gen-Y Phantom X part # GY59VR that you referenced whether in the rise or drop position will put the height right at the top or bottom of the hitch openings. So what that means is that if you picked the third opening from the top but had the platform in the rise position it essentially would be the same height as the drop position of the second opening. So in the drop position in the 4th slot it would be an 8 inch drop, and in the rise position of the same...

  • Recommended Dual Ball Mount for Using a Bike Rack While Flat Towing a Vehicle
You are on the right track but you need to use the Gen-Y Adjustable 2-Ball Mount w/ Stacked Receivers item # 325-GH-315 instead. This ball mount is rated to be used with a flat towing set up and a bike rack. The Gen-Y Phantom Hitch Ball Mount item # GY27VR can only be used with Gen-Y accessories. It's not built strong enough to support a flat towed vehicle and a bike rack. If you don't have any intention of using the ball mount to tow a trailer, then I recommend just getting the Replacement...
