Can 2 Axles with a 2-3/8" Diameter Safely Hold a 4,500 lb Boat

Question:

I have a boat 4,500 pound total wait estimate by factory, can I used aluminum trailer tandem axles 2 3/8 inches diameter with four leaves sprint installed?

Expert Reply:

Since axles that have a 2-3/8" diameter are typically rated for 3,500 lbs, like the Dexter Axle # T3584F-EZ-8974, then 2 of them would put the weight capacity at 7,000 lbs so they will be able to handle a boat weighing in at 4,500 lbs as long as the boat trailer itself doesn't weigh over 2,500 lbs.

You also want to check the weight rating of the boat trailer itself. Even if your aluminum axles are rated for more than your 4,500 lb boat, the rest of your trailer may not be able to handle the weight. The weight capacity of your boat trailer and your trailer axles (if they are OEM) can be found on a sticker towards the front of your trailer. If you can't find the weight rating of your axles on the sticker then the rating should be stamped on each axle about in the middle.
