Rotating Arms with Ratcheting Hooks

RockyMounts SplitRail LS Adjustable Wheel Arm

The SplitRail has ratcheting hooks that grab your bikes firmly by the front wheel - not the frame. It's perfect for carrying carbon bikes or bikes with a custom paint job. To load a bike, simply place your front wheel in the cradle, rotate the arm up and over the wheel, and press down firmly on the ratcheting hook.

Sliding Rear-Wheel Straps

RockyMounts SplitRail LS 2 Bike Rack Adjustable Rear Wheel Straps

The sliding rear-wheel straps allow the rack to accommodate bikes with wheelbases up to 48" long. The ratcheting, rubber straps hold your bikes' rear wheels securely in place on the tray and fit tires up to 3" wide.

Adjustable Bike Tray

RockyMounts SplitRail Rack Adjustable Bike Tray

The front and back trays adjust 4" side-to-side to ensure you have enough space when loading your bikes. Just remove the 4 bolts where the tray attaches to the top of the rack, slide the trays left or right to achieve the desired spacing, and then re-install the bolts. This will prevent your bikes' handlebars from becoming tangled, and it eliminates bike-to-bike contact.

Front-Mounted Release Lever for Easy Tilting

RockyMounts MonoRail 3 Bike Rack Tilt

The rack tilts down - with or without bikes loaded - so you can access your vehicle's rear cargo area. Because the tilt-release lever is located at the front of the rack, you don't have to worry about crawling through bikes or squeezing between the rack and the vehicle to pull it. When you raise the rack back up, you'll hear a click to indicate it's secure.

RockyMounts MonoRail 3 Bike Rack Tilt

When the rack is unloaded you can pull the lever to fold it up for storage. This means you don't have to remove it to park in small lots at the trail head or in cramped parking garages.

Easy Installation

RockyMounts SplitRail LS Anti Wobble Hitch Lock Diagram

It installs into your 2" hitch receiver. Insert the shank into your vehicle's hitch receiver, then install the hitch pin and tighten it down. As the pin tightens, it engages the 3-axis anti-wobble bolt inside the shank. This system will reduce noise and movement while the rack is installed.

Complete Security

RockyMounts SplitRail LS 2 Bike Rack Built-in Cable Locks

Included locks secure your bikes to the rack and the rack to your vehicle. The integrated cable lock threads around your bikes' frames and inserts into the lock that slides along the cable.

RockyMounts SplitRail LS Hitch Lock and Hitch Pin

The hitch pin also comes with a hitch lock to help prevent the rack from being removed from your vehicle.

Convenient Wall Mount Storage Hook

RockyMounts SplitRail LS Bike Rack Wall Mount Storage Hook Supporting Rack

An included mounting hook bolts to a secure attachment point so you can hang the rack when not in use. Simply remove the rack from your vehicle, reinstall the hitch pin and then set the shank in the middle of the bracket, inserting the hitch pin into the bracket's cradles.

RockyMounts SplitRail LS Hanging Mount

To mount the storage hook, use a pair of 5/16" x 3" lag bolts (sold separately). Select a sturdy location, such as a wall stud, and make sure the location is at least 36" off the ground so the rack can hang unobstructed.

The rack is sturdy and works well, way better than my old hanging racks. It was the best for the $$ when I bought it in Nov 2019.

Some negatives:
Biggest detractor is that you have to unweight the rack while you are pulling the handle to get it to raise back up. Just annoying enough that I don't always raise my rack, and it got hit today, the base bent and it's out of stock.

The screws loosen often and I have to retighten them.

It's sometimes not easy to get all handlebars and saddles just right so all the bikes sit properly in their trays.

I wish I would have spent the extra $$ and bought the OneUp.

Sometimes it's hard to depress the locking button on the arm so you can push it down to secure the wheel.

You can't go from four trays to three, just four to two. Another reason I should have purchased the OneUp.

Clearance isn't the best, but that's surely vehicle dependent. I scraped the bottom once going over a dip in the road, despite driving an SUV (Highlander).

Same cons as previously mentioned. Adding two more: NO way you can reach in and lower the rack to the ground so you can open the glass or back of the SUV when you have three or four bikes on. Its at the back of the second rack, so impossible to reach. Also, the arms that hold the front wheel either squeak terribly I tried to grease it, not luck, are sticky and hard to push, or flop super easily, so much so that I have to ratchet it down when the rack is up, otherwise it bangs against the back of my car.

Can’t say enough about this awesome bike rack. Ours has been used regularly as a 4 bike rack and 2 bike rack for over a year now. We’ve traveled 100s of miles all over CO, UT, and WY with no issues. Rock solid and well built. No sign of product fatigue and no material failures of any kind. 100% satisfied!

Still going strong after a year of road tripping, switching back and forth from a 2bike and 4bike rack. No issues whatsoever! Well built rack!

by:

Immediately after purchasing went on a 14 hour road trip with all four bikes - eight hours of which was through a driving rain and substantial winds - the bikes did not move once. Installation takes a bit of time and the instructions could be a little clearer but very impressed with the product (which came on time) so far.

  • Where Does Spacer Install on RockyMounts SplitRail When Adding 2 Bike Add On
I attached a picture of the install instructions for the RockyMounts SplitRail part # RKY11404-4 that you referenced that details the portion that covers the spacer you mentioned. Looking through the included parts that come with this rack it looks like there's only the one spacer and not any extras. For the screw that's not wanting to thread there's a possibility that the threads aren't perfect and that's preventing it from being able to install all the way. Make sure you aren't cross...

  • Recommended 4 Bike Rack That Tilts Away From Vehicle and Works with Up to 29 Inch Tires
I recommend using the RockyMounts SplitRail LS 4 Bike Platform Rack - 2" Hitches - Tilting - Wheel Mount # RKY11404-4, because as a platform rack it'll be easy to load and the rack tilts away from the vehicle to open the hatch with your bikes loaded up. This rack is designed to work in 2" hitch receivers like the one on your 2019 BMW X5. We've had several others use this rack for long road trips with rave reviews and it's going to be the perfect solution for your long trip through the Rockies....

  • Will Folded Up RockyMounts SplitRail Bike Rack Clear Spare Tire on 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited
On the RockyMounts SplitRail bike rack # RKY11404-4 when folded up it measures 6-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack. If you measure the distance between the center of the hitch pin hole to the rear edge of the spare on your 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and find that it is less than 6-1/2 inches the rack will fit when folded up. If you have a longer measurement let me know and I can make other recommendations.

On your 2018 Subaru Forester, the Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver # 75876 will be about 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin to the outer most part of the bumper. The RockyMounts SplitRail 4 Bike Platform Rack # RKY11404-4 will measure 6-1/2 inches from the center of the hitch pin to the closest part of the rack when folded up for storage, which is adequate clearance. When folded down for carrying bikes, the closest part of the carrier is 10-1/2 inches, so you won't have any issues...

  • Will RockyMounts Split Rail Bike Rack Fit 2008 Honda Odyssey and Fold Up
When we installed the Draw Tite hitch part # 75270 on a 2008 Honda Odyssey we found that from the center of the hitch pin hole to the furthest point out on the rear bumper it measured 5-1/4 inches. The RockyMounts Split Rail part # RKY11404-4 will clear that folded up as it has a distance of 6-1/2 inches from the pin hole to the nearest part of the rack when folded.

  • Will 4 Mountain Bikes Fit on the RockyMounts SplitRail # RKY11404-4
On the RockyMounts SplitRail # RKY11404-4 the center to center spacing from one bike position to the next is 9 inches. It will likely be a tight fit for 4 mountain bikes that is why the trays slide 4 inches side to side to optimize spacing. The rack will accept tires up to 3 inches wide. The Yakima Yakima HoldUp # Y02443-2 will offer a little more space, with 11-1/2" between bikes, so it will be easier to get your 4 mountain bikes on it. The 3 inch wide tires would not be a problem. Between the RockyMounts SplitRail LS Bike Rack for 4 Bikes # RKY11404-4 and the Thule T2 Pro XTR Bike Rack for 4 Bikes # TH69TX I'm going with Thule all the way. The T2 Pro XTR has the anti-rattle integrated into the bike rack so you won't need tools to install it, there are wheels on the pivot-point part of the base so that you can wheel it to your vehicle instead of half-way kill yourself moving it around (both racks weigh over 100 lbs), and if that isn't enough to convince you then...

For your 2013 Toyota Sequoia and 2007 Jeep Wrangler I recommend going with the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443-2 because it is more versatile. Both racks have the ability to be 2- or 4-bike racks. Since you will only be carrying 2 bikes on the Jeep this is an ideal set up. The HoldUp also has a little more clearance compared to the SplitRail # RKY11404-4 but neither will be able to fold up on the Jeep (they will clear the spare when in the folded down position). • Can RockyMounts SplitRail fit 2019 Toyota Highlander and Compare to Yakima FourTimer
As long as you have a 2 inch hitch installed on your 2019 Toyota Highlander Hybrid like the Draw Tite part # 76156 the RockyMounts SplitRail LS # RKY11404-4 would fit and work well. You can use a bathroom scale to weigh your bikes as one way to determine it's weight. Both this rack and the Yakima HoldUp # Y02443-2 only touch the bike tires when securing to the rack and not the frames. Both of these racks include locks for the bikes to the rack as well as for the rack to the hitches.

I do have a solution for you to have a 4-bike swing-away bike rack but unfortunately the RockyMounts BackStage # RKY10002 does not have an add-on. Instead you can use the RockyMounts SplitRail # RKY11404-4 with the Yakima BackSwing # Y02483. The SplitRail weighs 76 lbs and can hold up to 4 bikes that weigh a max of 40 lbs. I do have options for you but the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver part # 75673 will not work with the Yakima FullSwing 4 Bike Rack part # Y02465 because the hitch pin hole of the Draw-Tite hitch when installed on your 2016 Subaru Legacy will be recessed too far under the bumper to allow you to use the release handle on the back of the rack. • Can Extension be Used so Folded Up RockyMounts SplitRail Bike RackWill Clear Jeep Spare Tire
While there are extensions such as # C45791 that will work there are a couple of problems with using one. First, the use of an extension reduces the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent and puts a lot of extra stress on the hitch. And second the use of an extension voids the warranty on RockyMounts bike racks including # RKY11404-4. There are no 4-bike platform racks that can clear 9 inches when then are folded up. The SplitRail is less expensive. It weighs a few lbs less than the NV as well at 76 lbs compared to 86 lbs. So for those reasons I would probably go with the RockyMounts instead.
