When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - T4830300 Review

Today, were going to review T4830300. This is the Titan Prime Brake Actuator for these brakes. This is a weld-on unit. This surge-type Actuator will bolt over a 3-inch wide trailer tongue and includes standard heavy duty coupler with a 3-inch drop, and the drop would be measured. When this is welded on, this is the top of your trailer tongue. The distance from there where your hitch ball is located right here, theres a 3-inch drop there.

Basically, if you measure, youll see a 3-inch drop. This coupler is designed for use with disk brakes. This hydraulic actuator will synchronize your trailer brakes with the tow vehicle brakes. The roller design helps reduce resistance during telescoping to create straight line movement. It is built with a sturdy, durable steel construction and will resist bending in any jackknife situation.

The standard heavy duty coupler has the built-in drop as we mentioned earlier. It has a breakaway kit which is included. Basically how that would work is you would attach this end to your tow vehicle and then if theres a situation where this would come unhooked from your hitch ball, it would pull this chain which would then pull this lever forward, which would apply pressure to the master cylinder and apply pressure to the trailer brakes to stop the trailer from being run away. This has a prime finish. It is a weld-on installation and this is for a disk brake application.

It does use a hitch ball size of 2-5/16. The mounting is for a 3-inch wide channel tongue. Basically, it will be 3 inches wide. The capacity on this is 12,500 pounds. Maximum tongue weight capacity is 1,250 pounds.

It does come with a one-year warranty. To show you, on the back of it, basically, the hydraulic connection -- right here you just remove this orange plug and then you can connect your break line to that. Now on the hitch ball, just to show you how that would operate, is you would pull up on this round lever right here to unlock it, then pull the latch all the way up. What that will do is release this wedge right down in here. It might be hard to see, but it is located down in there, and then you would just set this this does use a 2-5/16 hitch ball. I have one here for display. Put the ball in there. When you pull up on it and release it down -- as you can see that wedge will come out and wedge around the very bottom of the hitch ball, so it will keep your coupler connected and to release it again, just pull up on it and then allow to release. The thing you want to make sure is when you do push it down, make sure theres a cut out right here that this will lock into. There are two holes right here on the latch. You can put a coupler lock through here, which will lock it onto your trailer hitch ball or onto the hitch ball or if its going to be in the storage, you could put a lock through here that would keep somebody from attaching it to their trailer. Basically, the way to this actuator would work is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, the deceleration will occur. Momentum will push you trailer forward to the rear of your tow vehicle. With the surge-brake system, the actuator is triggered, as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. This will telescope inside the actuator which will apply force to the master cylinder and that in turn will apply hydraulic pressure to engage your trailers brakes. Again, this comes with a limited one-year warranty. That should do it for review on part number T4830300.

See what our Experts say about this Dexter Brake Actuator

  • Is there a Minimum Weight Requirement for Actuating Couplers
Actuating couplers do not come with a minimum weight capacity, however, there could be some potential issues if you are towing a trailer with a weight well below the capacity of the coupler you are using. For example, I had a situation where a boat trailer that weighed just under 8,000 lbs when loaded and used an 8,000 lb actuating coupler. After the boat was dropped off at the lake, the trailer only weighed about 1,500 to 2,000 lbs. We found that the trailer would be heavy enough to...

  • Does The Master Cylinder Assembly Need Removed Before Welding Actuator # T4830300?
I do recommend removing the Master Cylinder Assembly # T4749501042 from the Dexter Brake Actuator # T4830300 before welding it in place. This will ensure you do not melt the inner boot on the front of the master cylinder. This assembly is only held in place by 4 bolts and removes easily.
