When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Dexter Brake Actuator - Adjustable Channel 2-5/16 Inch Coupler - T1889800

Hi everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a look at this Dexter adjustable channel drum brake actuator. This adjustable channel surge type actuator is going to activate your trailer's drum brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. When you apply your brakes in your tow vehicle, as you know, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer towards the rear of your vehicle. So, with surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while your tow vehicle slows down. This actuator telescopes applying the force to the master cylinder, which in turn is going to supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer brakes.

Now, this will weld onto your trailer tongue and give you an adjustable channel that has three different mounting positions for this standard heavy duty two and 5/16th inch coupler. And while we're here, let me go ahead and just show you this coupler in action. I do happen to have a two and 5/16th inch hitch ball, so I'm just going to lift this latch, slide that ball in. And as you can see, this is going to be nice and secure, and lift this back up and that's going to allow me to disconnect from my hitch ball. Now, this is a three inch wide channel with four inches of vertical range, four inches of vertical range of adjustment.

So again, you're gonna have three different mounting positions with this coupler. Overall, this is made of a sturdy steel construction with a primed finish and a gross towing weight capacity of 14,000 pounds and a maximum tongue weight of 1400 pounds. And this features a unique roller design, which is going to reduce resistance during the telescoping to create straight line movement. We do have grease search there for easy maintenance of that roller mechanism. And as you probably already saw, this does include a breakaway chain and it has a hook at the end so you can, so this is can ensure a secure connection to your breakaway lever on your actuator.

Now, this is going to hook to your tow vehicle and prevent a trailer runaway situation. So, if your trailer unhooks from your tow vehicle, it will pull this chain, which will then activate the master cylinder to apply the brakes to keep it from a runaway situation. Now because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer brakes. Well, that's gonna wrap up our real quick look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you.

Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.
