Ryan: How's it going Ryan here at etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the line of bulldog heavy-duty cast head couplers with a wedge latch. This is going to be a great heavy-duty replacement option for you especially if your old one like we have here is rusty, bent, or even broken. Now, what I really like about this one is the fact that it has pre-drilled holes in it and that's going to allow us to bolt it on which can make life a lot easier because most of us don't either have the equipment or the know-how to actually weld a new coupler on your trailer. Now, one of the things I really like is the latch mechanism. It's really easy to use and sweet to operate.
You simply just pull your pin out and it's going to stay locked in the closed position.We're going to have a trigger down here and when we lift that up, we're able to raise a latch into the open position. There's going to be a hole here too so to keep it open, you can just take our pin and reinsert it. So to give you an example, whenever we pull back our wedge, that's going to open up, allow us to get our ball in so when we close it, that wedge is going to hold that ball in place. Now, the only thing I would really change about this is the fact that it does not come included with any hardware. But other than that, it's very simple to install.Speaking of which let's go ahead and put it all together now.
To begin your install, you're going to want to properly support the front of your trailer using some suitable jack stands because we're actually going to have to remove our jack. Our jack is going to be held in place with three bolts and so what I'm going to do is take a nine 16 inch wrench, put on the bottom side to prevent the nut from spinning and remove each bolt. Once we have all the bolts removed and simply slide it out and set it off to the side. Now, at this point, we can go ahead and remove the coupler itself. Now this is going to be held in place by five bolts on each side.
So again, I'll use my wrench to hold the nut on the backside and we can take all the bolts out.Once all these are out on one side, we'll just repeat that same process on the other side. With all the hardware removed now we can just lift our coupler off and set it to the side. I went ahead and used a wire brush just to kind of clean up our surface here and in our case, since our trailer frame is made from aluminum and the coupler made from cast and I'm going to do is just put a little layer of anti-seize on our surface, just to help prevent any corrosion. We can take our new coupler, set it in place and put our bolts back through. Now I'm using some new hardware, which I would recommend, however, it is sold separately.Now I'm only going to put the back four in on each side for now because this hole is where I'm going to attach our safety chains.
Now with the back four bolts in place on each side, we can go ahead and snug all of our hardware down. Now to attach our safety chains, what I'm going to do is take the end of our chain, a bolt with a flat washer on it, push it through and on the other side, let's take another flat washer, run that through. Then we can simply just put it through that last hole and secure it on the backside. Once we have a hand tight, you can then go ahead and snug it down. Let me go ahead and repeat that process on the other side. Now we can go ahead and torque all of our hardware down.Once everything is torqued, you can go ahead and drop your jack back through. Rinse all the hardware and tighten everything back down and that'll finish up our look at of the line of bulldog heavy-duty cast head couplers with the wedge latch..

Helpful people at etrailer. They told me the info they needed to set me up with the correct coupler. I did my homework, got back with them and Angie had my trailer coupler delivered to me the next day. I will definitely call them first always for trailer needs.
Non-product specific stuff first... etrailer.com has to have some of the best customer service out there, got a delay on this being a backordered part, got an updated email that it was going to be almost a 2 month delivery delay but I needed this specific hitch so I was in a bind. You guys came in good with an under promise, over delivery since I got it well before the estimated delivery date. That doesn't seem to exist in retail anymore and you've earned my future business for that! The hitch in particular worked about as well as I hoped to replace my old Fulton hitch that the clamp had rusted away on. I still have some work to do to replace the load levelers and put a new tongue jack on but I know where I'll be ordering that jack from for certain! Thanks etrailer!
I am now in the process of removing the old (El Cheapo) coupler that came with my (El Cheapo) tow-behind travel trailer and installing this serious-serious "Bulldog" coupler because I never again hope to be out with a crowbar trying to disconnect my tow vehicle from my trailer! A bit of dignity afforded by replacing a $33 item with a $142 item is, as is said, priceless. I read the earlier reviews and, as an engineer, will be surprised if I ever again need that crowbar with this fine piece of machinery!!!
This a heavy-duty connector that I am using to replace a broken one on my flatbed trailer. This unit is designed well and fit as it should onto the A-frame of the trailer.( Once I got the old hitch cut off with a grinder!)
The ball receiver is very solid and the latch hitch, I think, will be better than what I had, which was a wrap-around type that broke.
I plan on adding a couple of spot welds just as insurance, although using 12 Grade 8 bolts will certainly hold the thing just fine.
Great quality product! Huge improvement over the Bulldog Collar-Lok style coupler it replaced on our horse trailer. Completely eliminated the damage to the hitch ball caused by the original coupler.
The product choices allowed me to choose exactly what I needed to replace my trailer coupler with a new and better one plus a new and better jack. Once I cut off the old coupler, fitting the new one was easy. I really liked the bolt-on concept which allowed me to do the repair at home without having to weld one on where I don’t have access to a welder. I am a very experienced welder but don’t have a welding machine at home.
I received the coupler in a few days as promised. I removed the old Fulton unit and replaced it with the Bulldog from etrailer.com. I was expecting some modification to make it fit. This head coupler lined up perfect with the rails and the 10 bolts on the side. Install went smooth with the addition of the bulldog trailer jack.
This fit the Featherlite Livestock trailer
The original one I had on my Featherlite enclosed car trailer cracked and I wanted one that had the holes predrilled to align with the existing holes in the A frame. Etrailer had the exact match and it was a Bulldog! Needed it next day due to heading out to race and it was on my door step by 10:30 and fit like a glove. Real nice piece and great customer support...Thank You!!!
Nice strong trailer coupler. We replaced our original equipment coupler on a Hallmark trailer. The new one is approximately 1/4" galvanized steel.
Item ok. Buyers need to determine where they plan to attach there safety chains. The Fulton Unit I was replacing had a better location for safety chain connection. The two 1/2 holes dont allow for easy chain connection die to very limited space.

Not a problem on the review. Im glad to help. I recall I was mainly writing the review because of e-trailers service, which is outstanding. The coupler, on the other hand, I dont really like. We have purchased about two dozen of these couplers from our main vendor over the past year and a half for a special line of trailers we are doing. *I purchased that one from e-trailer since we were in a pinch with our main vendor. These couplers, while appearing to be very heavy duty, they have a flaw that is pretty frustrating. If the customer happens to forget to unlock the coupler before letting their jack down, or vice-versa when hooking up, this puts a bit of stress on the bolt inside the locking mechanism. This bolt comes pre-bent from the factory and the design, in my opinion, is not good. The bolt is bent on the threads of the bolt and this weakens the bolt. The bolt needs a very tight tolerance angle in order for the locking mechanism to function properly. Ifwhen the customers hitch ball jams up in there in any way, after repeated times, the bolts bent angle changes which greatly affects the travel of the locking mechanism. Often it results in a complete failure of the coupler itself since the locking mechanism is now junk. All that said...I would not recommend this coupler. We are only continuing to use them since it is what our marketing folks specd and we have a signed contract and were only building a few more and then were completely done with that. Sorry for the long story. I hope its helpful info for you.
Excellent coupler! We welded up the jack hole and welded each of the bolt holes and the coupler is rock solid. The latch is very positive and the construction and fit exceeded my expectations! Thanks and I will be a repeat customer.
As advertised! Holding up well, but I'm in Florida so I spray WD40 on it every few weeks. It's a challenge to install if your not a little mechanically savvy. Tight spaces and hard to get to. I'll pay the trailer guy next time and save my knuckles.
