Video Transcript for Review of Demco Brake Actuator Parts - Solenoid Kit - DM5404

Ellen: Hey, everyone. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to be taking a look at the Demco Solenoid Kit. This is going to allow you to use the Solenoid to bypass your brake signal whenever you go into reverse. So, it connects into your vehicle's wiring to detect that signal. So, as you're trying to back up with your trailer, the brakes aren't going to engage and prevent you from making those moves. A lot of times, whenever you have the brake actuator put in your trailer, or put on the front of your trailer, it's going to prevent any kind of movement since it's going to sense that backing up motion. So, let's take a look at what comes in the kit.

This is pretty much everything you need to get this installed. You will need a couple of tools, including a 1032nd. 1032 tap and a 532nd-inch drill bit to make some modification to your brake actuator. It's pretty straightforward, but it does require a little bit of drilling to get this installed. So we get our Solenoid, the fittings to go on our configuration here.

Does also come with some instructions to help us get everything installed. Pretty straightforward. It is designed for use with the Demco DA10, the DA20 and the DA91 hydraulic brake actuators. Again, it is a bypass configuration. So, it's going to bypass that reverse signal and help you to get your trailer to back up without any issues from your brake actuator.

That's pretty much all there is to it for our look at the Demco Solenoid Kit. I hope this video has been helpful. Thanks for watching.

My trailer came with a different brand solenoid that kept failing year after year once my trailer reached about 5 yrs in age. This other solenoid did not have a wired ground so the failure was most likely due to corrosion. The wired ground on the Demco allows you to get a good ground on the exterior of the trailer. The Demco solenoid worked the first time I tried it this spring after sitting outside over the winter.

by:

Working as designed to do. Seems if you don’t use often they freeze for some reason. I now keep a battery and leads close by to activate solenoid daily as this is third unit.

It is working, I still activate it daily. I’m converting to EOH.

Worked as expected, thanks

A lot of communication during this sale. Vendor sent me detailed messages throughout the shipping process from manufacturer to distributor to him. I never had to ask, "where is my stuff?"

Good pricing too. So I've bookmarked their site as a one of my trailer parts go-to places for future needs.

Good people.

This reverse lockout solenoid works. the directions for installation are difficult .the picture on the directions are not of this product. The solenoid did not have the in and out ports marked, then the wires are not in the same place as the one in the picture so trying to determine which port is which by comparison is impossible. I had to connect the solenoid a couple of different configurations to see which was the right way. I would not recommend this product to others.

by:

Received item quickly, price was right. This is the third solenoid for my 2 year old trailer, only change the body part, magnets good.

by:

Excellent service by phone.

by:

Easy to mount. Strange it doesn't come with a shield like the other two kits do. Will have to make one to protect the solenoid.

by:

Very easy to install and wire onto the trailer. Thanks for the quick delivery!

by:

Just what I needed, and great service

by:

FAIR PRICING, FAST SHIPPING.

Everything worked out perfectly. Thanks

  • Surge Brake Actuator And Lockout Solenoid For A Homemade Dump Trailer
Hello John thanks for your question. First off, I do like your choice of the Demco # DM5947 actuator for this application. Like you said, no reason to add a potential breaking point and it is heavy-duty enough to handle really anything your dump trailer could handle. That and the weld-on design will allow you some flexibility in how you want to mount it. Especially for non-traditional or homemade trailers this will definitely be a good choice. As far as the reverse lockout solenoid, we...

  • How to Determine the Correct Replacement Brake Assembly Size for a 6,000-lb Axle
You can determine what the correct replacement brake assembly is by measuring the diameter of the brake assembly. This is measured from one brake pad directly across to the other brake pad. This is demonstrated at the 2:05 mark of the attached review video for our Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA that should be what you are needing for your application. This kit measures 12" x 2" and is compatible with 5.2K to 7K axles. This kit also comes with both the right and left hand assemblies. If...

The solenoid kit you need for the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator # DM8203322 is found on our site as Part # DM5404. This kit installs on the actuator and allows you to backup with standard hydraulic brakes when it receives a signal from the reverse lights on your tow vehicle.

When using a product such as the Solenoid Valve for Titan Brake Actuators with Reverse Lockouts # T4748800 or Demco Solenoid Kit for Brake Actuators with Reverse Lockouts # DM5404 the trailer brakes do not activate when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse, therefore allowing you to back up a hill or curbs. Even with this solenoid, we recommend reversing up the hill slowly and carefully. We recommend using a solenoid shield, like part # T4836100183, to provide protection to the valve...

  • Comparing Bypass and Non-Bypass Electric Reverse Lockout Solenoids for Surge Couplers
Demco Solenoid Kit (Bypass) # DM5404, when energized, will only allow the brake fluid to flow back into the master cylinder. A non-bypass, when energized, will just prevent the fluid from flowing anywhere. The type used depends on the master cylinder type on the actuator. To use a bypass type the master cylinder has to have a return port for the fluid to flow back into. A master cylinder without this feature would use a non-bypass. Both thread into the back of the master cylinder directly....

  • Will Demco Solenoid Kit Allow Titan Model 60 to Back Up Hills
Based on my research, it looks like the port size should be the same for your Titan Model 60 and the Demco Solenoid Kit for Brake Actuators with Reverse Lockouts # DM5404. As for other pitfalls, not that I can think of, and this will solve the issue of allowing you to back up the hill leading to your garage without your trailer brakes activating.

If your 2006 Toyota 4Runner has a 7-Way, then the center pin on it should be the reverse light circuit. To test it you will need one other person, a circuit tester such as # PTW2993, and the vehicle wheels will need to be chocked. Basically, you will have the other person sit in the vehicle, start it up, apply the emergency brake, keep their foot on the brake, and put the vehicle in reverse while the wheels are chocked (safety first). Then you can use the circuit tester to test that center...

  • Reverse Lock Out Solenoids that Fit Demco and Titan Actuators
Sounds like you are looking for a reverse lockout solenoid. If you have a Titan actuator you would want part # T4748800, or a Demco part # DM5404 which uses bypass routing like you mentioned. I can't recommend you use the Demco on a Titan though.

  • Troubleshooting Surge Brake Trailer that Locks Up Brakes in Reverse But Solenoid Clicks
It is very possible the solenoid is defective. Since you hear it click when put in reverse we know it's getting voltage like it needs. You first might try improving the ground of the solenoid though. It's possible it's just not grounding properly to allow it to fully operate. If you have a Titan actuator you would want part # T4748800, or a Demco part # DM5404 for a replacement if you determine you the ground is good. If you have a different brand let me know.

I checked the instructions for the Demco Solenoid Kit # DM5404 and though it is a little vague, you will want to have the flared inlet attached to the actual brake line and the flat inlet attached to the #6 fitting (which then attaches to the master cylinder). I included an image of what this should look like once installed as well. Should help visualize everything.

It sounds like the trailer has a manual reverse lockout feature. This means that you would have to physically go back to the coupler and move a lever or insert a pin to prevent the brakes from engaging when going in reverse. The other type is an electric reverse lockout. This works using a solenoid, such as # T4748800 or # DM5404, attached at the back of the master cylinder on the coupler.
