Video Transcript for Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera Extension Cable Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins extension cable for the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera in the 5-foot length, part number HM3100504060, also available in 25-foot length, part number HM3100504061. Here's our cord and this is what it's going to look like when we're got it laid out. Here you can see we've got both ends that have the arrows so that we can line it up properly to plug it into the existing wiring so that we can extend it and get it to our monitor. This extension is going to be a great solution if you think you may not have quite enough cable for your truck. If you're got a long bed truck this definitely may come in handy. As you can see, we've got a full 5 feet of length. Now that we've got over some features, let's show you how to utilize it.

As you can see, this cable here we've got routed from the back of the truck, but we don't have quite enough to reach up to the dash where the monitor is mounted. This is where our 5-foot extension can come into play. We'll line up the arrows on the corresponding plug of our extension, plug that together. Then we've got 5 more feet to route up towards our dash, so now I'll have problem reaching it and we can mount it on either side of our steering column. that's going to complete our look at the Hopkins extension cable for the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera in the 5-foot length, part number HM3100504060..

I chose to locate the monitor next to the rear view mirror, and after reading reviews on this site and others, bought the additional cable and installed monitor first. Then I ran the cord back toward the tailgate, and installed the camera and ran the cord toward the front. Stashing the extra cord someplace safe was easy. When ever I felt uncomfortable about what I was doing, I would watch the video showing my concerned area and then move on. I figured I could install in less than one hour and a half. Didn't make it as my assistant slowed me down. (See picture)

I bought this camera system for my wife's Honda Odyssey and all we can tell is we love it. I wanted to conceal the cable pretty good so the extension cord is a must. It doesn't have an OEM look but all we needed was a good backup camera system with sensors and this one filled all my expectations. I highly recommend this system.

Excellent product, the screen could be a little bigger, but works great when backing up to my trailer, I had to buy the extra 25' cable because I installed this on my 40' diesel pusher.

Its working great I wired it up to help me hitch up my trailer and so I can monitor my trailer as Im going down the road.

I purchased 2 camera units about 6 months ago and postponed the review until I had used them for awhile. 1 camera a 2000 Silverado 4 door extended cab/6 ft bed and 1 for a 1987 F700 dump truck with a 16 ft bed.
I also purchased the 5 ft and 25 ft extention cables. For the Silverado the main cable was about 3 ft. short so the 5 ft cable was required and as expected, short for the Ford dump truck. On both trucks I ran the camera wire under the carpet/mat thru the floor board {driver side}.. The required hole size for the cable grommet is too small for the cable end to pass thru, so I purchased a 3/4" grommet to complete both installations.
My first attempt hitching my trailer was amazing for it was dead on and all I had to do was lower the tongue onto the ball...THESE CAMERAS ARE GREAT!

by:

Delivered on time. Installation took about 3.5 hours on my 2005 F150. With the extended cab F150 I did not need any wire extensions. The standard wiring was long enough with a foot or so to spare.

The unit works great. Very clear image on the monitor. Beeper warning is handy and accurate for distance. Instructions were fine with the online video which I recommend. I have the factory tow package so the plug into the trailer hitch wiring was simple. I found the standard monitor settings fine and did not need to adjust contract brightness or color. I highly recommend this set up.

by:

I bought this extension for my backup camera. I mounted the camera to the rear of my fifth wheel camper so I could back into a camping site without a helper directing me and it works great!
One year and several thousand miles later and still working great.

by:

The wire extension allowed me to easily install the backup camera on our 2013 Tahoe. The added wire was needed to reach from the license plate on the tailgate to the camera on the dash.

by:

Great product for the intended purpose. I still had a TON of extra wire left. I routed the wire from the back bumper through the firewall, up the A-pillar and into the roof center console on 2011 Tundra long bed extended cab. I needed about an extra 3 feet or so more than the kit supplied. I just ended up coiling the extra and stashing it above the console. Works great. I’m the only one who knows it’s a bit ugly up there

by:

Well the back up camera for my 2008 Chevrolet c4500 was just what you said it was .At a great price thanks for you r help in this .It works great

Product is working fine. Mounted the camera on the back of my travel trailer, since my f150 has a backup camera on the truck. Works great, wish I could get rid of the backup lines on the monitor.

Thanks for the follow up Tom. Unfortunately the Hopkins Smart Hitch is designed to have the the alignment and distance lines displayed, at this time there is not a setting or option to remove those lines from the display.

No complaints...everything still works well.

by:

The install was very easy and camera works very well. Only problem is the mounting tape does hold very well . Over all very good product

by:

Product came and works great... Also the customer service consultant was very good and worked with me on getting the product using the least costly expedited shipping rate before going out of town. I will continue to use etrailer for my vehicle and towing needs. Representative on the phone was great.

by:

Excellent product! Took about one hour to install and was very simple. Would recommend product to anyone looking for a backup camera that won't kill the wallet.

by:

Will install on a 2006 Sprinter and don't know how it's going to fit yet. Put in a 2010 Frontier 2 yrs ago and it was excellent.

So far, Im happy. I have a ground problem I cant rectify. Lights on trailer are not as bright as tow vehicle. Turn signals are slow and dim. Tried to locate flasher, but dealer said the flasher SHOULD be adequate. Still didnt find it. Dont think its in the coupler, I think its in the ground to trailer or tow vehicle. Ill find it, Just need time and better weather. Thanks. If you have a suggestion, feel free to relay it. Mark

Thanks for the review. Ground wire problems happen very often so please make sure that any debris or damage isn't hindering your ground wire. Attached is a trouble shooting question that may help you.

by:

Did not need it but I will save it for my next installation.

Works just as I expected it to. I only wish it came in shorter lengths since I only needed about 2 feet.

Unfortunately a year later, the camera has stopped working. Now, whenever I have my vehicle in reverse, all I see on the screen is blue and the sensors havent been working for some time. My guess is that the winter weather took its toll on the camera. Im saddened because I really feel that this is a good product but the weatherproofing needs to be improved.

Thanks for the follow up Todd. I contacted Hopkins and discussed your issues with them, and they said that the blue screen indicates that you are getting power to the back up camera, but that there is likely an issue with the circuit board portion of the Smart Hitch system. Unfortunately, those circuit boards are not available as stand alone replacement parts. Since it is 2 years since your purchase date, this item is out of warranty.

  • Extension Cables Available for Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera HM50002
The length of the wire harness included with the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 is just over 19-feet so you'll want to use their extension cable # HM3100504061. This 25-foot extension will give you plenty of slack to allow you to route it in the most convenient way. A 5-foot extension is also available, part # HM3100504060.

  • Is the Extension Cable Required to Install a Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera on a 2000 Ford Truck
Most likely you will not need the Extension Cable for Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM3100504061 for your 2000 Ford Super Duty Crew Cab since the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera and Hitch Aligner System # HM50002 that you referenced has a cable that is that is 19 foot, 7 inches. We've installed this camera system on crew cab trucks and we did not have to use the extension cable. I attached review videos for both of these installs for you to check out.

With the use of the 25 foot extension cable # HM3100504061 you will be able to mount the backup camera in place with ease. Depending on the route you need to take on your Expedition, if you do find you are in need of more wire there is a 5 foot extension # HM3100504060. • Backup Camera Recommendation for a Motor Home
A backup camera like the # HM50002 would work great on a motorhome, but since motorhomes are pretty long you will need to get the extension cables like part # HM3100504061 which is 25 feet in length or the part # HM3100504060 which is 5 feet long. I attached an install video for this back up camera for you to check out as well. I like this camera since it is a hardwired camera that won't have interference issues.
