Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12-1/4" Left Hand Driver's Side Self-Adjusting Hydraulic Drum Brake Assembly. Now the hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators. This one is a dual servo, which means it has the dual plunger design. This will deliver the same amount of braking when driving either forward or in reverse. This is a self-adjusting brake and you can tell that by the cable that goes around the pulley, connects to this lever here that will automatically adjust the adjustment here. Now self-adjusting brakes will automatically adjust to deliver optimum performance and braking power, there's no need for manual brake adjustments. The proper adjustment will lead to better brake efficiency, and less wear on your tow vehicle brakes. Now this part includes the left hand driver's side brake assembly.

Now the mounting bolts and hardware to install this, they are sold separately. A few dimensions on this, it's 12-1/4" x 5". The 12-1/4 will be the diameter from this brake shoe over to this brake shoe, so if we put a ruler on that, there's your 12-1/4" diameter. The 5" is the width of the pad on this shoe, so if we put the ruler on that there's your 5" wide. Now this does install on a brake mounting flange bolt pattern of seven bolts. It does require the use of 12-1/4" brake drums. The wheel size used on this, it has to be 15" or larger, and this is designed for an axle that's rated at 12,000 lbs.

now this is a left hand design, and the way you can tell that, now in a new assembly it'll have a sticker, that's the easiest way, but if the sticker wasn't there you just need to look at the length of the pad on the shoes. So the pad here goes from here to here, this one's all the way from here to here, so this is a shorter pad, the shorter pad is the primary shoe, that will always face the front of the trailer, so that's going to tell you this is the left hand driver's side assembly.
