Video Transcript for Brophy Safety Chains and Cables MB12 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Brophy Safety Chain Mounting Bracket. This mounting bracket is going to weld to your trailer, and then it's going to provide an attachment point for your safety chain hook that way you can secure your safety chain. The unit's made from a durable steel construction that's unfinished so it's ready for welding, and you can paint it that way it can match your trailer. Taking a look at some of the measurements real quick, the overall length, measuring from edge to edge, that's going to give us a measurement of about 6-1/8" long. Then the diameter is going to measure 1/2" diameter. The opening, taking a look at the width, basically just measuring from the beginning of one curve to the same point on the other side, that's going to give us a measurement of about 1-1/2" there at the bottom. The height that we have, what I'm going to do is I'm going to place a straight line right here, as if it was welded to my tool, and then I'm going to take another measurement from the bottom edge right here to my straight line, that's going to tell us the height.

It looks like the height of that opening is going to measure about 3/4" tall. The product is made in the USA, and again, it's that nice, durable steel construction with a raw finish. That's going to do it for today's look at the Brophy Safety Chain Mounting Bracket.

  • Can Safety Cables be Wrapped Around Trailer Tongue
Yes you can wrap your the Blue Ox 7' Safety Cables - 7,500 lbs # BX88196 or 10,000 lbs # BX88197 around the trailer tongue, though ideally you would use a mounting bracket like the Brophy Safety Chain Mounting Bracket - 6-1/8" Long x 1/2" Diameter # MB12 or 5/8" Diameter # MB58. I have added links to a couple video reviews for you to check out as well.

  • Torque Specs for 1/2 Inch Grade 8 Bolts to Install Demco Trailer Coupler DM14793-81
Starting with the safety chains they really need to be attached to the trailer frame and not the coupler hardware. If there is no where to attach the chains on the trailer you can weld on safety chain mounting brackets such as # MB12, # MB38, or # MB58. For 1/2 inch Grade 8 bolts you will want to torque them to 115 foot pounds.

  • Is Brophy Safety Chain Mounting Bracket MB12 Compatible with Safety Chain 2118-605-04
The hook end of chain # 2118-605-04 will fit mount # MB12 but the opening in the chain links is too narrow for MB12 to fit. You would need chain # 1483-535-04. I tested this chain and the MB12 and they will work together. Or you could go with an S-hook with a keeper on it like # C81820 and securely hook onto the MB12.

  • Using Safety Cables or Chains with Titan Swing Away Actuator on Trailer
Safety chains and cables, such as the Curt Single Hook # C80136, are generally attached to the trailer itself and not the coupler. If your trailer does not have any good mounts on which to attach the cables, you can install some like the Brophy Mounting Bracket # MB12. I have attached a short video demonstration on this part that you can also check out.

  • Safety Chain Mount Large Enough for Two Chains
Typically, two of the safety chain brackets would be used. Given the 1-1/2 inch by 3/4 inch size of the loop (see photo), I doubt that two separate chain links would fit. If the links of your safety chains would slip over a 5/8 inch rod, the # 337SC58B would be a better choice as the 2 by 4-/2 inch opening would provide lots of room for two chains to attach.

  • Can an 8,000 Pound Brake Actuator be Used with a 4,000 Pound Trailer
A gross trailer weight of 4,000 pounds is within the capacity of the Titan lunette ring actuator # T4093200. But the lower weight would not actuate the brakes as well as a heavier load closer to the 8,000 pound capacity of the actuator. Safety chains are usually attached to the trailer, not the coupler. If the trailer does not have mounts on it to attach safety chains then some will have to be installed such as # MB12 or # MB58. Breakaway cables do not have a capacity because they are...

  • Safety Chains and Cargo Tie Downs for 6 x 10-Foot Flat Deck Utility Trailer
Thank you for the photo of your utility trailer that appears to already have safety chains installed near the coupler. Safety chains should be selected based on trailer weight and on the length you need. If your trailer has a 3500-lb-rated axle then chains like 60-inch 5K Curt part # C19749 would provide sufficient capacity and their latching hooks will make for easy attachment. If you prefer shorter chains you might prefer the 27-inch 5K # 2118-605-04. For a weld-on bracket you might...

  • Do Safety Chains Come with Titan 8K Zinc-Plated Drum Brake Actuator
Safety chains are usually attached to the trailer, not the coupler. Only a handful of the couplers we have include safety chains but # T4093200 is not one of them. If the trailer does not have mounts on it to attach safety chains then some will have to be installed such as # MB12 or # MB58. I have also included a link to the safety chains we carry.

  • What is the Purpose of Third Mounting Hole on Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout
The third hole on the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator w/ Electric Lockout - Disc - Zinc - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs # DM62VR is for an additional bolt for mounting. The other two holes are required for mounting the actuator, the one you are referencing is optional. You could choose to drill a third hole to make use of this or just use the top two. Safety chains are typically mounted to the trailer. If you need to add mounting brackets for safety chains you would need something like the # MB12...

  • Options For Connecting Safety Cables When Using The Dexter DX29FR Actuator
Well Brent that is certainly a valid concern, because the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX29FR does not have any kind of built in safety cable connections. In fact very few of the surge brake actuators that we carry will have cable connections. In most cases the safety cable connection will be part of the trailer tongue itself and not part of the brake actuator (example pictured below). As far as getting you a cable connection point, it could be as simple as putting a hole a bit...
