Video Transcript for Curt Safety Chains and Cables S-Hook with Wire Keeper Review

Hi there safety conscious haulers. Today, we're gonna be taking a look at CURT's S-Hooks with the latch. These are available in either a 3/8" diameter, 7/16" diameter, or 17/32" diameter. That's important for determining the appropriate size to fit through either your safety cable loop and your safety chain. If you're using on a trailer, your safety chains, depending on how thick the diameters of those and the weight ratings are also going to correspond with those sizes. For the 3/8", it's going to have a 2000 pound weight rating, for the 7/16" it'll be 5000 pounds.

and for the 17/32", it'll be 7,600 pounds. And you can see here, we've got S-Hooks installed on safety chains on a pop up camper back here. So they're not exclusive to just flat tow setups. This one here is just a standard one that doesn't have a security latch. So this is a good candidate for an upgrade for one that does have that latch.

So that way they know that they're going to be safe, no matter what, whether they're hitting those bumps down the road, this isn't going to be able to just pop off of there, it's going to stay in place. Just make sure you pick the appropriate diameter and weight for your particular trailer to make sure it'll slide through your chain links and that you've got enough capacity here for the event you do have a catastrophic disconnect. So here you can see why we're going to be replacing our S-Hook here. This is the one we've currently got on here, and you can see it comes off really easily. This particular S-Hook you can notice it's got a couple of holes in it there at the bottom.

Those two holes are where the latch mechanism used to be. It got a little corroded and worn out here, and then it's actually just fallen off down the road. A customer no longer has it. The hook does still function as an S-Hook, but we've lost that extra security of the latching function now. And on the back of these motorhomes, there's so much motorhome that hangs off back behind the rear axle, when you hit bumps and stuff like that, there's a lot of up and down motion and force.

And in most cases, the cables don't move around too much because they're coiled cables. They got some tension on them and stuff like that, that holds them in place. All those major forces going on, it could leave it in a position where it could throw the hook up and it could detach. It's very unlikely, but adding an, that latch in there that it used to have is going to help ensure it stays in place. So we have replacement S-Hooks here with latches that you can get from etrailer.com. We've got them in a variety of sizes, so you can make sure you get the appropriate one with the right weight and also the right diameter to fit through your particular safety cable or safety chain, depending if you're installing this in a flat tow setup, or if you're installing this on a trailer. Our release mechanism here, you can see where it slides into those two holes. So it's pretty much identical to the one that was on there before it's going to give us the same functionality. So now we're just going to show you how to get this old one off of here and then how to get the new one installed. So we've gone ahead and brought it inside. We've attached it to our vice here. You could try to spread this apart, however, this is some pretty thick metal. It's extremely difficult to get it clamped tight enough in there to be able to get this spread apart, to slide your cable out. So in most cases, it easier to take your cutoff wheel and just cut this off of here. Now we've got to cut pretty much all the way through. You can just take it off of there and our cable should slide out of there. I have to pop it out of the vice. When you do pop it out of the vice, just cut this, it's going to be really hot. So don't touch that little piece there. So you might have to grab a pair of pliers just to work it off of there. There we go. Now we can go ahead and install our new one. This is simply just going to slide in place just like that. And then we can crimp it down in our vice here. And we just kind of squeezed it until we know it's closed. We'll then just going to loosen it up some. It will likely spread open some. So just want to check to see where you're at. That looks still looks pretty good, no way that that's going to come off of there. So we've now got this attached and replaced. We're ready to go put it back into service on our flat tow set up. And that completes our look at CURT's S-Hooks with safety latch..

Seems to me that the factory safety chains that come on trailers are rarely of a sufficient capacity to handle your trailer and all of it's valuable contents in the event of a coupling failure or an accident. These S-Hooks are a great start in beefing up my safety chain system to protect my ATVs and all my camping gear.

by:

These are hooks that I will be using to attach safety chains on a Car Dolly that I pull behind a Motor Home. The price was right, they were in stock and they arrived in a decent amount of time. I'll remember Etrailer for any future needs.

by:

These hooks and chains were far superior to the original equip. I use them on my HD Dump trailer to hold the tail gate as I spread the crusher run. Works great ..no failures

The product was of excellent quality and the price with shipping could not be beat anywhere on the internet.

no worry about hooks bouncing off

Great price, but you'll probably need a vise, special tool or bring it to a shop to squeeze the end on your chains.

I wanted a hook that wouldn't come off by it's self. This works perfectly.

  • Replacement S-Hooks for Trailer Safety Chains
We can offer you replacement S-hooks with keepers for your trailer's safety chains. You'll just need to find a suitable saw (or helper who can bend the S hook open) to remove the old ones. We have S-hooks in 7/16-inch size # C81820, 17/32-inch # C81830 and 3/8-inch # C81810. You can certainly use a clevis hook like # 6495-301-04 or a Quick Link such as # BX229-0512 if you prefer these over the S-hooks. Cutting your chains down to the correct length will not reduce their capacity so long...

  • Recommended Clevis Hook for a Winch and Safety Chains
I do have options for you but the Curt S-Hook with Wire Keeper part # C81820 is not going to be the best solution for your winch's cable/strap or safety chains. Instead, for the winch I recommend using a clevis hook like part # 6495-401-04 and for the safety chains I recommend using a clevis hook like part # 6495-301-04. The clevis hooks are a much better design for both your winch's cable/strap and safety chains. I have attached a review video of each clevis hook for you as well.

  • What to Do When Safety Chain Hooks Wont Fit Holes in Trailer Hitch
In this situation, most folks either replace the safety chains, using a hook that will fit. Another option would be to use a quick link, like # C82932. Attach the quick link to the safety chain hole in the hitch, then attach the safety chain hook to the quick link. The exact link or replacement safety chain you need will depend on the weight of the trailer. You'll want to choose chains or links with a capacity equal to or greater than the weight of your trailer.

  • Is Brophy Safety Chain Mounting Bracket MB12 Compatible with Safety Chain 2118-605-04
The hook end of chain # 2118-605-04 will fit mount # MB12 but the opening in the chain links is too narrow for MB12 to fit. You would need chain # 1483-535-04. I tested this chain and the MB12 and they will work together. Or you could go with an S-hook with a keeper on it like # C81820 and securely hook onto the MB12.

  • Width of the Opening on of the Curt S-Hook # C81820
The opening on the Curt S-Hook # C81820 measures 3/4 inches. Overall length is 4-1/8 inches. I attached a picture that shows this dimension as well.

  • Recommended Safety Chains For A 7,000 Pound Tandem Axle Trailer
The rating listed for a single chain, like the Curt # C80031 at 5,000 pounds of capacity, will double when two are used. So the # C80031 used as a pair will mean you would have 10,000 pounds of capacity. With that said, I am not a huge fan of the S-Hook design as it can be a pain to get the rubber retainer band piece over the hooks when it's cold out and they can break as well. If you are wanting something that has good capacity and has clevis hooks, which I prefer, check out the Reese...

  • Size of Safety Chain Hooks on Draw Tite Hitch
I went to the warehouse to take a look at the safety chain hooks on Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch # 41946 and they measured about 1 inch wide and about 3/4 inches thick at its widest point. I took a look at a number of them and there was some slight variance in the thickness so it is highly likely yours is not exactly that width. It is not absolutely necessary for the spring latch (the catch) to snap shut because in the unlikely event the safety chains come into play the latch really isn't...

  • How To Attach 7/16 Inch S-Hook To Safety Chains
Since the Curt S-Hook with Wire Keeper for Safety Chains and Cables, part # C81820 is made of 7/16 inch diameter zinc coated steel, I recommend using something like a vise or channel locks if available to crimp the end around your safety chains. If you do not have one at your disposal, you might consider taking it to your local garage or mechanic. They will likely have the equipment needed to get this s-hook attached to your safety chains. This S-hook is made of SAE Class lll steel and...

  • Length of Curt Safety Chain with S-Hooks # C80031
Thank you for your recent purchase from etrailer. The Curt Safety Chain with S-Hooks # C80031 that you purchased has an overall length of 48-inches (including the two hooks) and an actual chain length of 40-inches as noted on the product page. Since I do not know how much additional length you require I suggest you take a look at TowReady # TR63035 which has an overall length of 72-inches. Or if you need only another inch or two you could add on Curt S-Hook with Wire Keeper # C81820 or...
