Wedge Style Latches Vs. Trigger Latches on A-Frame Couplers

What is the difference between a wedge latch and a trigger latch? Is one superior to the other or is a matter of personnal preference? What about durability? Does the latch secure to the ball in a different manor with each variety?

The main difference between the wedge style latches and the trigger latches is in the capacity of the coupler. The lighter capacity couplers will use a trigger latch, whereas the higher capacity couplers will use wedge latches.

For example, the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch # BD44125W0317 that you referenced uses a wedge latch and has a capacity of 12,500 lbs. An A-Frame Coupler # CA5100B uses a trigger latch and has a capacity of 5,000 lbs.

Either style will work great, as long as the coupler being used is of a heavier capacity then the trailer.
