Replacing Breakaway Switch On a Trailer with ESCO Breakaway System

Question:

I have an ESCO brake away and can i just use any kind of replacement? Also how do I remove the old one?

You likely can use any replacement switch since all they do is complete a circuit when the pin is pulled out.

One wire on the switch should be connected to the positive battery terminal on the trailer. The other will tee into the wiring leading from the trailer connector to the brake magnets like in the diagram I have included.

Just follow the wires on the old switch to where they are connected and remove them. I have also included a link to the right that should help.

My Esco switch has two wires and I am replacing it with a three wire switch. How do I wire it?

I'm guessing that one of the wires is for the ground. If you check out the Hopkins Switch # HM20060 you can see that the white wire is for the ground connection. You'll want to verify this with any instructions or perhaps the manufacturer just to be on the safe side of things.
