Brake Controller And Brakes Recommendations For 2010 Kia Sedona And Trailer

Question:

On 7/14/14 you sent me a wonderfully detailed email concerning a hitch, electric trailer brakes etc., parts cost and how to hook it all up. I was impressed. But I may go a simpler route. Vehicle is the same: 2010 KIA Sedona LX with 119" Wheelbase, V-6 and automatic. transmission. HITCH: please verify that the correct 2" receiver hitch is a Curt #C13345, and I need the cost. WIRE HARNESS: I need to match my cargo trailer wiring which is a 4 way flat variety. What is the cost and correct part number for this harness?

Thank you for the spec sheet on the axle you have on your trailer. I spoke with my contact at Dexter and they told me that you do not need to replace your axle, you can just upgrade the one you have.

They told me that you have the brake mounting flange mounted on your axle so what you will want to do is add a new hub and drum, the brakes, and wiring for your trailer, and you should be good to go.

The hub and drum I recommend is the etrailer.com Trailer Hub Assembly, part # AKHD-545-35-G-K. This includes the hub, drum, bearings, races, seal, cap, and lug nuts. Since you are upgrading the trailer you will need to order a quantity of 2. The hubs have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and are galvanized.

The brakes I recommend for your trailer are the etrailer.com Self Adjusting Electric Brake Assembly, part # AKEBRK-35L-SA for the L/H, and part # AKEBRK-35R-SA for the R/H. I have included a link to an installation video for these brakes you can check out.

I recommend the Deka Jacketed 2 Wire, 10 Gauge Brake wire, part # 10-2-1 when adding brakes to your trailer. This can be ordered by the foot.

To install a 7-way connector on the trailer I recommend using part # H20046, along with a junction box like part # 38656.

The hitch I recommend for your 2010 Kia Sedona is the Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C13345. This is a Class lll hitch and has a 2 inch receiver opening. I have attached an installation video for this hitch.

To install a brake controller on your Sedona, you will first need to install a 4-way connector and then a 7-way connector for the trailer and brake controller. The 4-way connector I recommend is the Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # C55503. This easily plugs into the vehicle wiring behind the tail lights.

The 7-way I recommend is the Universal Installation Kit, part # ETBC7. This plugs into the 4-way on the vehicle and along with additional wiring, gives you a 7-way connector at the rear of your vehicle.

The brake controller I recommend is the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. This is a proportional controller that activates the brakes on your trailer in proportion to the brakes on your towing vehicle. This is our most popular controller because it is easy to install and use.

When running wire for the brake controller I recommend using part # 10-1-1. this is a 10 gauge primary wire for used to run the brake signal from the brake controller to the trailer connector. This wire is ordered by the foot.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.

Thanks for the compliment. The Curt Trailer Hitch, part # C13345 is the right trailer hitch for your Sedona LX. To install a 4-way connector on your Sedona I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector, part # C56347. You simply plug the T-connector in the connection points behind the tail lights, run a hot lead to your car battery and you are good to go. I have attached an installation video for this harness on an 06 Sedona, but the installation should be very similar.
