Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes to Single 3,500 lb Utility Trailer Axle

Question:

I am trying to put electric brakes on my utility trailer that has a single 3500 Lb axile. It never had brakes. I understand the parts needed for mounting on the axile but am clueless about the electronic aspect. I have a factory installed brake controller in my 2021 Nissan Titan XD. If I wire a seven pin connector to the brakes and my lights will the system work without any other controllers? If not what do I need?

If your 2021 Nissan Titan XD doesn't already have a 7-Way then you need to install the Hopkins # N40975. This gives you everything you need for your brake controller and to control the trailer lights.

Then to add brakes and a 7-Way setup on your 3,500 lb utility trailer axle you need the following parts:

- Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35 (if axle doesn't already have this on either side)
- Self-Adjusting Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-35-SA
- Brake Mounting Hardware # BRKH10B
- Hub and Drum Assembly (5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern) # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K
- Hub and Drum Assembly (6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern) # AKHD-655-35-EZ-K
- Breakaway Battery Kit # 3802308
- Junction Box # 3430001-JBK
- 7-Way Molded Trailer Wire Connector # H20043
- 10 Gauge Wire (sold by the foot) # 10-1-1
- Butt Connectors # DW05745-10

I'm also attaching a helpful article on parts needed to add electric trailer brakes for you to check out. The brake kit comes with both the left and right brake assembly but you need to purchase 2 of the flange mount brackets as well as hub and drum assembly. When it comes to the 10 gauge wiring you need enough to run from the location of the junction box back to one of the brake assemblies and then across your axle to the other brake assembly. I recommend getting a few extra feet of this wire just to make sure you have more than enough to route it away from hot or moving parts underneath your trailer.
