Does Curt Extra Long Ball Mount D-28 Reduce Tongue Weight and Trailer Weight Rating Of Hitch?

Question:

Curt D-28: 14 1/4” long. With the increased length of this ball mount, does this ball mount decrease the ability to handle to advertised tongue weight and towing capacity. It is my understanding that an extended hitch, using couplers or pins to attach hitch extensions together, does decrease tongue weight and towing capacities by 50, but I thought the increased length of the D-28 does not affect the tongue weight and towing capacities. Am I right or wrong? Thanks

You are correct.

The Curt Ball Mount for 2" Hitches - 4" Rise, 6" Drop - 14-1/4" Long - 6,000 lbs # D-28 you were looking at has a 600lb tongue weight rating and 6000lb towing capacity, and will not reduce the capacities of your trailer hitch receiver by 50% due to it not being an adapter.

If you were to use a hitch extender like the Curt Hitch Extender for 2" Trailer Hitches - 14" Long # C45795 the tongue weight rating of your hitch would be reduced by 50% due adding an additional component between the hitch and ball mount, but since the # D-28 installs directly into the hitch on your vehicle it does not have the same reduction.

For the # D-28 you will need a hitch ball with a 1" diameter shank. I recommend the 1-7/8" # 19260, 2" # 63845, rr 2-5/16" # 63847 to match the coupler of your trailer.

I included a video of the # D-28 for you to take a look at.
