Adding Brakes to a Mobile Home Axle

Question:

So I was reading the post that you guys have on converting mobile home hubs to 6 lug. It states that if the brake backing plate is welded to the axle then you have to make sure that the brakes are 12X2inch or the 6 lug wont work. The question is if they are welded and are 12X2inch can I bolt the new backing plate to the old backing plate that is welded on or do the old backing plates need to be cut off and weld on the 5 hole flange. Thank you for your help.

If your old axles have a 5 bolt brake flange the assemblies like Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12" - Left Hand - 6,000 lbs part # 23-105 or Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Assembly - 12" - Right Hand - 6,000 lbs part # 23-106 will bolt directly to them. If your current flanges don't have the same pattern you can remove the current studs in the flange and drill new holes in the correct spacing for these using the brake assembly as a template and using the Mounting Bolts and Hardware for 12" Brake Assemblies Kit part # BRKH12. If that isn't an option for you then removing the old flanges and replacing them with Brake Mounting Flange for 3" Round Axle part # 4-44-1 is the way to go.
