Can Brakes Be Added To Mobile Home Axle Used On Utility Trailer
Question:
I have a homemade equipment trailer with what I believe to be mobile home axles. They have old-style 5-spoke Dexter hubs with 12 x 2inch WELD ON not bolt on electric brakes. With this being a mobile home axle, is it possible to replace just the shoes? If not, what is the correct mounting flange to convert to bolt-on brakes? The axle tubes are 3inch outside dia. Thanks.

You can get a new brake mounting flange for your axle. The old flange will need to be cut off. The part is # 4-44-1. This is designed to fit a 3 inch trailer axle and should be welded in place by a professional.
Since you would also have to get the old brakes cut off as well the best recommendation I can offer is to replace the entire axle. Mobile home axles and components are designed for one-time use and nearly impossible to find replacement components that work.
Most utility trailers use an axle that measure 89 inches hub face to hub face and a 74 inch distance spring center to center.
If those measurements will work for your trailer I recommend part # e43SR. This axle includes the electric brake assemblies, hubs, drums, bearings, races, seals, and mounting hardware. It also has EZ-Lube spindles for simple lubrication.
If you need a different sized axle for your trailer you will need to go to a local dealer and get an axle.
