Turn Signals Come On With Brake Lights When Towing

Question:

I installed this onto a 2005 Honda Element, but now the brake signal is backfeeding into the turn signals. This results in both turn signals turning on whenever I hit the brakes. I’ve verified that the wiring is correct, and all trailer lights work as they should. The Element has LED lights.

It sounds like there may a wiring issue or a bad converter. When installing the Hopkins Tail Light Converter Kit part # HM48925 you want to hook up the wires to the following on your 2005 Honda Element.

Wires on converter -
White (ground) connects to Black wire on Element
Brown (tail light function) - connects to Red and Black wire on Element
Yellow (left turn function) - connects to Green and Yellow wire on left side of your Element
Red (brake function) - connects to green wire on Element
Green (right turn function) - connect to green and yellow on right side tail light of your Element

If all the connections are secure and this is how it is hooked up, it may be that you need a new converter. You do want to verify that the colors are the correct wires and test for function. I recommend part # C59236, the Curt Upgraded Modulite Vehicle Wiring Harness Kit. I have installed many Curt wiring kits and they are my favorite. The Tekonsha kit has a powered tail light converter, so a wire must be ran to the battery to power it up. It installs the same otherwise.

The biggest advantage of a powered tail light converter is the converter will not draw as much power from your vehicle's lights. Power being pulled from the vehicle's lights can put a strain on the electrical system, so having a separate power source eliminates the potential strain. With the converter protecting the factory system, the in line fuse protects the converter from any surges in power.
