Adding a 7-Way Trailer Connector to a 2017 Toyota Highlander Limited Platinum with 4-Way

Question:

I already have the factory hitch and harness in place but would like to convert it to a 7 pole round connector. I will be pulling a T@B tear trailer without electric brakes. Which wires do I need to connect and which ones can I leave unattached? Do I still need any circuit breakers? Thanks for the help and information.

To add a 7-Way connector to your 2017 Toyota Highlander which already has a 4-Way installed you will just need a few parts. First for the 7-Way you can use # 37185. This will add the 7-Way and retain the 4-Way should you need it.

If your trailer does not require 12 volt power then the only wire you will need to connect, other than the 4-Way, is the white ground wire which will go to a clean, bare metal surface.

If the trailer does need 12 volt power then in addition to the 37185 you will also need about 20 to 25 feet of 12 gauge wire # 12-1-1, sold by the foot, and circuit breaker # PK54540. You will also need some ring terminals and wiring tools so if you do not have those items I recommend kit # HM51020. Ground the white wire as explained above and then you will use the 12-1-1 wire to attach to the black wire on 37185. Route the wire to the vehicle battery. You will need any leftover wire to go from the breaker to the positive battery terminal.

Attach a ring terminal to the end of the wire and secure it to the AUX post on the breaker. Using the leftover wire attach a ring terminal to one end and secure it to the BATT post on the breaker. The other end will then go to the positive battery terminal using another ring terminal.

I have included some links that will help. Please note that not all of the instructions in the links will apply to your installation.
