Parts Needed to Add a Brake Controller on a 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee With or Without the Tow Package

Question:

Jon, After further investigation, I did find some type of plug behind the bumper next to the frame. I have attached a picture for reference. I believe is for a wiring harness, but unsure. It also looks like it’s a female. Can you take a look and let me know what I need? One other thing to note... the trailer has a 7-pin female versus a 7-slot as I mentioned earlier.

Since you don't have the trailer towing package on your 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee you do need to start off by installing a 4-Way connector. I recommend the Tekonsha T-One # 118425 as we have found Tekonsha to be one of the most reliable wiring companies that we carry.

To have 7-Way and 4-Way connectors on your Jeep you also need the Universal Wiring Kit # ETBC7. This connects to the T-One and give you both connections that you need. It also includes everything you need for the 7-Way to fully function. This allows you to use a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 if your trailer has brakes.

I have attached some additional videos and helpful articles for you to reference.

The picture that you sent in is of something called a U.S. Car Connector. It means that your 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee was equipped with the tow package and just need a connector socket like the Hopkins part # HM40975 which will give you both a 4-Way and a 7-Way connector. If you have the tow package on your Jeep then that mean you only need the Plug-In Adapter # TK93VR to install the Prodigy P3 # 90195. This will plug into an existing connector under the driver's side dash. I have attached videos of these products being installed on a 2012 Grand Cherokee for you to reference. Since your trailer connector is a 7-Pin instead of a 7-Blade you can either cut off the connector and replace it with a 7-Blade like part # A7WCB or you can use an adapter like part # F77R. The 7-Blade style is much more common so it may be easier just to replace your trailer connector in case someone borrows your trailer and you forget to give them the adapter.
