Trailer Hitch Recommendation for a 2004 Volvo XC70

Question:

What kind of hitch should I install on my Volvo CX70 station wagon, so will it haul a horse trailer with a 1500 lb. horse or should I just stick to bike hauling w/the Volvo and get a truck? Thanks.

All of the available trailer hitches for a 2004 Volvo XC70 are class II hitches with a gross trailer weight capacity of 3,500 pounds and a tongue weight capacity of 300 pounds. If the combined weight of your horse and trailer (loaded and ready to tow) is less than these limits you could certainly tow with your Volvo.

If that ends up being the case, I recommend the Draw-Tite Class III Trailer Hitch # 36297 because it will well for both towing a bike racks. The Curt trailer hitch for your vehicle requires the use of an additional stabilization strap with non-trailer loads, such as bike racks, but the Draw-Tite Hitch does not carry this same warranty requirement. For a drawbar with a rise, the recommended drawbar is # 36061 which offers a 3-1/8 inch rise.

For a ball, you can use # 19257 (1-7/8 inch diameter) or # 19258 (2 inch diameter). For trailer wiring, you will need 4 Pole Harness, # C59496. I have included a link to the installation details.

If the weight of the horse and trailer ends up being over the capacity of the hitch and/or car, or it is too close for comfort, a different towing vehicle would be the way to go.
