Complete Towing Package for a 2010 Hyundia Sante Fe Towing a Travel Trailer with Weight Distribution

Question:

I just bought a 2010 Hyundai Sante Fe, SE w/ trailer wiring. I want to tow our 21 Trailcruiser with WD. So I need a hitch, wiring for 7-pin, brake controller. Can you recommend a package? I think the Drawtite would work well with WD. Is this a 1/2 day install or more?

I would recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, item # 75684, for your 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe. This hitch has a 5000lbs gross trailer weight rating and 500lb tongue weight rating, when used with a weight distribution system. You will need to check the towing capacities of your vehicle in the owners manual or at the dealer to determine if the vehicle is capable of towing the load you will require.

The best weight distribution system for your trailer will be one that matches the tongue weight of your trailer, fully loaded and ready to travel. The weight of anything stored behind the rear axle of the Santa Fe also needs to be included as tongue weight. Since the hitches available for your vehicle do not have weight distribution ratings over 500 pounds tongue weight, I would recommend the Reese Strait-Line Hitch 600 lbs TW / 12,000 lbs GTW, item # 66072, which includes the most advanced sway control available to keep the trailer tracking straight behind the vehicle, even in high winds and when large trucks pass on the highway.

The wiring you will need to install a 7-Way connector and a Brake controller on your vehicle are the Tow Ready T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Trailer Connector, item # 118415 (if you do not already have a 4-pole connector) and a Brake Controller Installation Kit, item # ETBC7, which will include all of the wiring, hardware and circuit breakers needed to complete you wiring installation. I have posted instructions and videos below to our brake controller installation from scratch FAQ that will guide you through the installation process.

For a brake controller, I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Proportional Brake Controller, item # 90885, which is easy to use and adjust to your towing needs and has great reviews by our customers that use it.

Professional installation time for the hitch is 30 minutes so for the average do it yourself-er you are most likely looking at an hour or so, not including clean up. The wiring installation will take a bit longer with the 7-way install kit, but I would think that you could complete the whole installation in 6 hours or so. If you have any trouble, feel free to contact me and I will be glad to help.
