Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

We install these axles on our trailers for years and they have worked well without any problems.

by:

I inherited an aluminum trailer that ended up needing a complete overhaul and etrailer was the best resource I could have found. After researching extensively to find out what I needed and watching their videos on how to do it I ended up ordering an EZ-lube axle, galvanized hubs, springs and a hanger kit (in other words everything from the frame down).
Everything shipped quickly and arrived in great shape. All the parts worked perfectly and I couldn't be happier!

by:

Awesome quality! These are way better than what Wally World has on the shelf. Smooth as silk.

EVERYTHING IS WORKING GREAT,,,,NO PROBLEMS.....

by:

1 yr later, axle and bearing set is working well.
I decided to replace the axle under my trailer rather than the whole trailer.
I like the pre-bend in the tube for keeping tires balanced under load as well as the basic finish rather than bare steel.
Purchase price made it even better after shopping around a bit.

Doing well, as you know, the axle gets used only when the trailer does so it sits a lot. But I do enjoy that it has the pre bend to it so when loaded up it tracks true and the tire wear is even.

by:

Bought this for my boat trailer. Great looking axle took all the measurements and it looked like it would fit. When I put my hubs on it they were about one inch short. So being short there are no threads to tighten the nut against the bearing. So now I need to order there hubs. This should be mentioned when you order the axle. Or give the hub over all length.

The axel is working great with no problems.

by:

I have ordered from your company several times and this is the first time you shipped by the post office, everything has been UPS, if this is the way you are going to ship something this long and heavy through the post office, I will have to order form some other company next time I need something. I have dealt serval times ordering fishing rods and they were shipped by the post office and every time they came in damaged in some way so I will have to really give it a lot of consideration on ordering from your company again. Very dissapointed. I guess your claim on fast shipping may be true, but fast delivery is a joke.

by:

Great axel. Blindingly fast service.

Axle is still good after a year

by:

Shipped fast. Product seems strong. I do have a problem (not etrailer's fault), the axle I replaced didn't have a raised leave spring mount as this one does. That extra inch put my tires into the fenders (literally) :( will have to cut fenders off and probably end up getting another axle maybe one longer so I can have boat ride between fenders instead of over them.

by:

Axle bolted right in place and has been performing flawlessly for a year now. Great product!!!

by:

The parts where just what we needed for our trailer Shipping was fast and no damage to parts.

by:

I am happy with the final result. The first act we ordered was a fiasco. UPS says that USPS Employee signed for it but they don't except oversize packages and mine was 72" long. We hope that ups retired the first one to you because we would like a credit for it Thank you for your extra effort on our behalf.

by:

As usual, I can get parts cheaper and faster from etrailer. I don't even look for local suppliers these days. Since I discovered your excellent website and in-stock supplies, I just order and poof it appears, magic!

by:

The Axle fit perfectly and was a great deal! Everyone was great and even expedited the shipping up to Alaska. Will definitely be ordering parts from here in the future

by:

Helpful staff...quality products...fast shipping competitive pricing..etrailer recommended..that's why I am a repeat customer

by:

I now have 9780+ miles on my trailer. This item has held up to the task.

by:

Exactly what I needed. Came with all the parts necessary.

by:

Axle is what I expected at a good price I will be back for more parts in the future

by:

Best axle i have every seen. No need for bearing buddies anymore.

by:

The right part showed up on time. Thank you etrailer.com!

by:

Fast shipping, axle worded good

  • Replacement Trailer Spindle for L44643 Inner and Outer Bearings
A spindle that uses both inner and outer bearing L44643 makes it a BT8 spindle, # TRU94FR. Please note that welding on new spindles is a precision job and should performed by a qualified welder with experience welding on spindles. The alternative is to replace the axle. Axles are measured from hub face to hub face and from spring seat center to spring seat center. For example, the picture I have included is for axle # T20BTR-EZ-7258.

  • Can the Spring Seats On a Dexter 2,200 Lb Axle Be Moved and Re-Welded
Yes, you can move the spring seats to 53-1/2" apart on the Dexter 2,200 Lb Trailer Axle part # T20BTR-EZ-7258, or part # 20545I-EZ-72-10. This is pretty common practice as manufactures just place the spring seats in a common spot but the customers can move them as needed. That said, you will likely destroy the old ones getting them off so I also recommend getting the Axle Spring Seat part # TRSS175 (2).

Based on the picture you provided you are actually measuring from the inside of the drum to the inside of the drum, and not to the actual hub face. Since you are getting 62" inside to inside you are actually probably closer to 72" hub face to hub face. The closest standard axle we have to that length is the Dexter Trailer Idler Axle Beam with EZ-Lube Spindles - 72" Long - 2,200 lbs # T20BTR-EZ-7258 which has a hub face to hub face measurement of 72" and a spring center to spring center...

  • Can Replacement Trailer Axle with Smaller Diameter be Used on a Boat Trailer
If the axle is bent up in the middle then that is normal. Trailer axles have a bow in them so that when weight is placed on the trailer it flattens out. That is part of what gives an axle its capacity. If there is not enough weight on the axle then the tires will remain toe in at the bottoms and you will get tread wear just on the outsides of the tread. If the axle is bent in some other way then replacing the axle is a good idea. The diameter difference means that you would likely have...

  • Can Hubs from Old Axle Be Used With Dexter # T20BTR-EZ-7258 Replacement Trailer Axle
If your existing hub assemblies use the # L44649 inner and outer wheel bearing, hubs and races are still in good condition, you can reuse them. I'd recommend replacing the bearings and # L44610 races. I wouldn't recommend trying to bend the axle back into place. When the axle was bent, the structural integrity of the metal might have been compromised to an unknown degree. Be safe, replace the axle.
