Video Transcript for Ramp Springs Review

Speaker 1: Today, we're going to be taking a look at, and showing you how to install ramp springs for the 2000 pound torque rate for inch and a half shafts. The left hand side is part number RS16933LH, and for the right, you'll need part number RS16933RH.Now, these springs are designed to aid you in lowering and lifting these heavy ramps. If you don't have any springs installed, you know it can be quite a bit of a pain. As you're lowering your ramp down, you kind of have to be under it. You don't want to just let it drop .. Well, I guess you can, but you might cause damage to it, and vice versa. When you're trying to lift it up, you're going to lift up the entire weight.

With the springs installed, they've got a 2000 pound tension rating, so as we lower the gate, as we raise the gate, it's going to be much, much easier. Now, this is what I would call a medium/heavy duty utility type trailer. We'll also show you on a very heavy duty utility type trailer, the use of two of them for those much larger ramps, the triangulated style ramps. Those tend to be a lot heavier, so we'll show you that, as well.Just to give you an idea, however your ramp's held in place, you'll want to, of course, unsecure that, and then you'll see our ramp's going to come down much easier. It actually kind of floats there. We'll push that down.

That'll keep it closer to the ground. We can get our equipment on and off, then when it's time to shut them back up, much easier process than what you're probably used to, especially if you don't have springs, or if your current springs aren't in good working order. You can see our old spring. It's become worn, and it's not near as effective as it was. You see how that's pointing off, kind of in that rearward direction It just means it's been fatigued over time, so we're going to be able to replace it with a new spring. It's going to give us much more effect. Now, the left hand and right hand is going to determine which side of the pin you're going to be putting it on.

If you want it on the right side, you want a right hand spring, and if it's going on the left side, you're going to want your left hand spring. To ensure we get years of great service out of the ramp springs, they're made of a high quality alloy spring steel, so they're going to return to their original position for years and years. To ensure you have plenty of room, we're going to go over the specifications of the spring, just to give you an idea about the size. From outside of our spring to outside of our spring, we've got 2 1/2 inches. Inside and inside's going to be about and inch and a half. From the spring itself, to the end of each arm that sticks out, is going to be 4 inches, so you definitely want to keep that in mind, and make sure that you've got clearance for that, and also that, that spring will make contact with something within that 4 inch range. To begin your installation, you'll need to remove whatever's holding in your hinge pin. It's going to be the large inch and a half diameter pin that runs through here.

In our case, we've got a bolt and a nylon lock washer. We're going to use a 9/16 to get that removed. You also want to hang on to your hardware, because you're going to need this to put it back in. It keeps this pin from sliding in and out. You can see our old spring mounted here. We'll move our pin out, and the idea is to free that up. Now, this ramp's going to be very heavy, and when you pull that pin, it's going to want to fall down. You need somebody to give you a hand, or if you can handle it yourself, however you want to do it, just make sure, as you pull this pin, that, that doesn't fall down and hurt you. Now, we can remove that old spring, set it aside, and replace it with our new one. Now, we're going to be putting our spring on the other side. We've got an accommodation for one here or here, so it doesn't matter how you want to do it. Make sure you get it where you need it, though. Then, our gate hinge is going to go right in between there. As we install it, we can place that pin through. Now, as we replace our ramp onto the trailer, and install our pin, of course, we want to ensure that the pin passes through the middle of our spring, and we also want to make sure that the flange on the ramp goes in between the spring and the flange on our trailer. Now, to finish it up, we'll just reinstall the hardware that we removed to take that old one off.As we said, with these really heavy ramps, they look about the same as the other ones, but they're much thicker steel. It really is a problem, when it comes time to lower them. You're going to have to fight it. You're really going to have to put weight into it, and it can be slightly dangerous. If you have anything underneath there without steel toes on, you'll likely run into something. Same way, going up. Just make sure you get a good hold it.Then, you're putting yourself right underneath them, so if you we're to slip or your hand comes off, it can come back at you. Those springs are going to help us out a lot, with that situation. Now, just like before, we're pulling that pin out, although this time, we don't have any keepers to put it in, so we'll slide this one on, just like that, bring the pin in, a little further, we can get our other one put on.After we have our springs installed, there's a huge difference in the operation of our ramp. We'll go through that same process as before. You could see it actually hold my ramp there. At that point, we just need to press it down a little bit. That's going to make it much easier getting our equipment up and on it.Now, to raise it up, it takes a lot less effort, as well.Overall, our ramps are going to be much easier to use, but a big key is, they're also going to be much safer. That'll complete our look at the ramp springs.

Ramp Spring - 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Round Shaft - LH - RS16933LH

These ramp springs really took the work out of raising and lowering my heavy 3 fold ramps needed for a more long and level approach to our 10 ton trailer. I always looked for help when needing to raise them, now I can almost do it with one hand. It took a little work installing them because the old system had to be rebuilt somewhat. I kept the same 1" pins and used a 1 1/16" ID X 1 1/2" OD sleeve for the springs to work on. They were well worth my time. I`d rate this an excellent product.

Still work great! They gave me a lot more flexability moving equipment without always looking for a hand or trying to raise them myself.

We installed spring and lowered ramp. Spring bent and did not assist on lifting ramp anymore. Very disappointed

The ramp spring is designed to be used with a 1 ½ round pipe not a square pipe which might cause the ramp spring to bind. You also may want to use more than one spring on heavier ramps.

I think we should have ordered these many years ago. Amazing how just a little extra item can be appreciated at the beginning of and end at unloading time can make the day that much more pleasant. A real pain in the back saver/muscle relaxer. 11#'s of lift effort vs 58#. Why waste the energy doing 58 times two ramps 2 to 10 times a day when you don't have to?

Can someone tell me how to install trailer assist springs, please!

Patrick B.

7/23/2013

The Redline Ramp Spring RS16933LH is a replacement spring and is only part of the ramp spring system on a trailer. To use this spring on your trailer you must have ramp hinge with a 1-1/2 inch diameter rod or pipe where the ramp meets the trailer. The spring slips over the rod with the tension of the spring against the ramp and trailer when the ramp is in the up position. The spring should not be welded to the ramp or trailer, the tension and the rod will hold the spring in place. The springs we carry are designed for heavyweight steel doors or ramps commonly found on heavy equipment trailers or car haulers. If your trailer is not set up to accept a hinge spring, a hinge would need to be fabricated and installed.

The ramp springs like part RS16933LH that we carry are meant for heavy ramps, not for a 100 lb door. They do make springs like these for trailer ramps that weigh considerably less, but we do not carry them, nor do our suppliers. If you have an enclosed trailer, you might be able to use something like this part, ERS160D96.

by:

They were a b**** to put on but got her done by myself works great.

by:

My 16 ft mower trailer is loaded with tools from the shop rebuild so I have been having to use my 20 ft implement trailer to haul my sub compact tractor on when mowing the in-laws yard. The ramps are very heavy which was never a problem for occasional use but doing it multiple times a week was getting old so I went looking for a solution. These springs were easy to install and made all the difference in the world. The trailer is now much more user friendly. Wish I had bought them years ago.

by:

My gooseneck trailer has the extra wide ramps on it. Each ramp covers half the trailer. These ramp springs definitely help raise the ramps. I only wish the fingers (as I call them) were about 2 inches longer.

by:

I haven't installed them yet. But the customer service has been amazing, after a simple mistake was found

by:

I had to have 2 back surgeries, and I was not to pick up hardly any weight for a number of weeks. I had a neighbor help me install the ramp springs. After that I was able to lift the ramps with almost no effort at all. I am very glad I got the springs.

by:

works great .. takes a lot of back ache out of the ramps

by:

Need two on each side… one is not enough

by:

Two points of consideration, first the ramp springs worked great and make a world of difference when lifting my ramps. Second was the instructional video. Which made the install process simple and accurate.

by:

I got what I expected. Thanks for the great service.

by:

The springs are okay, but etrailer is awesome. Super-fast shipping and amazing follow up.

by:

Product was as described & fit was good. Delivery was faster than stated. Will require some mods to trailer to gain the best benefit from springs. Will order from etrailer in the future for my trailer needs.

Im very pleased with my parts. They were delivered in a timely manner. Once I installed they worked perfectly and will purchase from etrailer with all my trailer needs.

by:

I was very impressed on the lifting pressure of these springs. The lift weight of my ramps were approximately 75 lb. I added 2 springs per ramp and now can lift a ramp with one finger, approximately 5 Lb. They were a very good addition to my 3 axel gooseneck trailer.

by:

Our company installed these to assist with heavy folding ramps on a customer's trailer. They really helped with reducing the effort needed to fold the ramps up from the ground. We used 2 springs per ramp. Great product & great price.

by:

Heavy duty springs worked great. I was thinking about using hydraulics to raise and lower my trailer ramps until I found out about these springs from etrailer.com.

I recommend this product, worked great!!!!!

by:

I purchased these for our paving trailer that has bifold wood lined ramps. These springs did help but the ramps are still two man ramps and I put 5 on each ramp

by:

I installed these on my trailer with a 4' split ramps. They are great as I can pick the ramp up with one finger and move them into place. Great product.

by:

I still have them, sitting on my garage floor, in the original box that I received them in.

They are the WRONG SIZE, and when I wanted to return them (yes, more than 30 days after the purchase), I was advised that they would accept them, but I needed to send them via UPS, and they will deduct about half the price I bought them for, to cover for their shipping.

SO, I am NOT happy, and will never buy from you again... SORRY!

  • Trailer Ramp Springs Recommendation
The heaviest set of springs that I have for ramp doors are the Conventional Ramp Door Spring for 8' Wide Enclosed Trailer part # CB250D96SHD which offers a 250 lb. capacity. This alone will likely not be enough for you. If in your design you can incorporate something like the Ramp Spring 2K Torque for 1-1/2" Shaft part # RS16933RH for the right and part # RS16933LH for the left it could gie you the lifting support you will need. If this is not a viable option using a winch mounted in...

  • Choosing/Sizing the Correct Trailer Ramp Spring for a Ramp Door
When selecting ramp springs for a trailer ramp, you will want to know the diameter of your hinge pin and how much space you have available in the hinge. A typical horse trailer or utility trailer ramp uses 3/4 inch hinge pins and would require two ramp springs with a 3/4 inch inner diameter. The ramp springs that we carry fit 1-1/2 inch diameter hinge pins and are designed for use with heavy-duty steel ramps like those on equipment trailers or car haulers. • Trailer Lift Gate Spring Recommendation for a 120 lb Door
It sounds like you are looking for Ramp Springs, # RS16933LH and # RS16933RH. Made of quality steel alloy, these springs provide approximately 90 degrees of deflection and are designed to help lift a ramp with 2,000 pounds of torque. These would work great for a ramp that weighs 120 lbs. For lift capacity, the spring is rated at 2,000 pounds torque. This does not mean it would lift a 2,000 lb door. Also as a note, right-side springs have green paint on them and left-hand springs are...

  • Trailer Ramp Spring for a 5x8 Enclosed Trailer 72 Inches Wide Inside
Ramp springs such as # RS16933LH would be too heavy duty for your 5x8 trailer. The only other option we carry would be a garage door type of spring system. Since the trailer is 72 inches wide on the inside you would use # 362SA7 which is 77 inches wide and can be cut to length. The torsion spring on this type of set up can be dangerous to work with if you do not have experience with them. that is why we recommend a local overhead door technician perform the installation.

  • Availability of Replacement Ramp Springs for 6" Ramp Springs
The closest springs that we have to what you are looking for are the 4" springs # RS16933LH for the left hand side and # RS16933RH for the right hand side. These are rated for 2,000 ft/lbs and will do a good job at helping you lift your ramps. I would try checking to see what your current springs are rated for as well. If you have an older trailer then it could be that they are simply wearing out but if it is a newer trailer then you may need springs that are more heavy duty.

  • Recommended Gate/Ramp Assist and Hinge for Trailer Build
The 2K Torque Ramp Spring # RS16933RH is an industrial strength spring. It is designed for up to 90 degrees of deflection, but most people by hand can cause no deflection at all. It is designed to be used with the LH # RS16933LH, and is for heavy ramps or doors like in the attached photo. I would assume it is too strong for your application based on your wording. The best size of trailer ramp spring for your trailer is going to be the 81-inch dual torsion spring # ERS120D81. This dimension is the end-to-end length as you'll see in the video. This unit consists of two torsion springs on one shaft and it has a capacity of 120-lbs. This spring can be bolted or welded to the trailer header and it comes complete with dual cables and hardware. If you replaced the springs on your ramp door with the # RS16933RH it would definitely make the door seem lighter. If the shaft diameter that you current spring is installed on is 1-1/2 inch in diameter this would fit and work well. The matching left hand side is # RS16933LH. For a spring I recommend using the Redline ramp springs Right Hand # RS16933RH or Left Hand # RS16933LH depending on what your application calls for. These are designed for trailer ramps and are rated for 2,000 lbs so you know they will work properly. Since you mentioned a gate you might be interested in the Rack'Em Double Barrel Utility Trailer Tailgate Lift Assist w/ Chain # RA-27C instead as it's meant for smaller ramps on utility trailers. If your 7-foot long and 2 foot wide ramp is heavy enough then you would use ramp springs such as # RS16933LH and # RS16933RH. But each of these springs produces 2,000 foot pounds of torque so they may be way too strong for your ramp.
