Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Shipping time was Great. Will put on boat trailer tomorrow.

by: 10/15/2023

Super Fast shipping and a flawless transaction. From Missouri to Tennessee in 2 days. Very well packaged. Would definitely recommend. A little more expensive but I needed a higher load range and higher quality tire. Noticed also the valves stems are steel, not rubber

Bought two of the 12" Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire & White Wheel for my Pontoon Boat Trailer. Came on time and was perfect. I've put a lot of miles on it taking my pontoon to different finger lakes in NW PA and they perform perfectly and I travel 70 mph. Definitely recommend this tire and wheel and company as it came exactly as they said it would. Will not hesitate to buy from them again.

One year review kenda d-rated trailer tires. No issues to report with these tires and rims. D-rating put to the test on several gravel pit runs. etrailer is still a five star company provide prompt service, knowledgable staff and reliable products.

A year later, and still loving these tires and rims.

by:

I received these tires in a timely fashion. I have not had the opportunity to put them on my trailer yet but I feel that they will be a great tire. The rating was just what I needed to see as I will be hauling my Indian full-dressed motorcycle on this trailer at times. I didn't want to trust the old tires that came on the trailer.

Great price and fast shipping! Etrailer.com is a great place to do business.

The wheel has good welds and a flawless paint job. The tires are (by prior experience) known to be good quality. A good matchup at a good price.

Outstanding customer service! Tires were mounted and aired up to the proper psi, the packaging/shipping was also excellent.

Item arrived quickly and in perfect condition! Love the excellent quality of the trailer wheels. My husband is excited to get his utility trailer back into working order using these wheels!

They have been great, thanks.

by:

Good fit, and no problems and fast shipping what else can you ask for?

by:

We bought a pair of these tires/wheels a year ago and put them on our Teardrop camper trailer. We later traveled Route 66 from Missouri to the California border, through Death Valley with temps near 120 degrees and from there North through the remainder of California, Oregon and Washington. We then headed East through Montana, the Dakotas and a corner of Minnesota before returning to Iowa. The tires performed flawlessly, All in all we put a little over 8,000 miles on them.

Would definitely recommend them to anyone.

by:

It's The Heavy Duty Tire I've Been Looking For. Thank You !

by:

Fit just like the old ones in every way. These have the good metal valve steams that seem to last longer for me then the rubber cased ones. Etrailer has the best price I could find, and load range D that I could not find local. These also came in a box (well 2 boxes, 2 units per box) which I was somewhat surprised on, I have ordered wheels and tires before from other vendors and they were just tied together with cardboard on the wheel, it was nice to see these actually in a box. Will come back to etrailer when I need to replace these again, its somewhat of an odd ball size as well so I was glad to find them somewhere in stock.

  • Tire and Wheel Replacement for 1996 Coleman Pop Up
Due to the age of your 96' Coleman pop up and there being a few different versions it's hard to say exactly what size you have, but we did have a guy with a 97' come tell us he had the tire size 5.30-12 mounted on 5 lug wheels so I'll go with that but I'd recommend verifying the size you see on the sidewall of the tire. You'll want to choose a tire whose load rating for two tires exceeds the fully loaded weight of your pop-up (including propane and water). We offer a 5.30-12 wheel/tire...

  • Should a 20.5x8x10 Trailer Tire be Replaced with a 5.30 x12 Trailer Tire
It is always recommended to go with the original tire size as indicated by the trailer manufacturer. The specific size was chosen for best performance given the type of load that will be on it. The modern equivalent to a 20.5x8x10 is an ST205/65-10. The Loadstar K399 Bias Trailer Tire, # AM1HP54, would be a good choice. It is a load range D tire rated for 1,220 pounds at 70 psi. For longest life and best performance you should always inflate trailer tires to the maximum psi as indicated...

  • 1/2" Wheel Stud Lug Nut Torque Setting And Tightening Pattern
The proper lug nut torque setting for the Kenda 5.30-12 Bias Trailer Tire with 12" White Wheel # AM30859 is going to be between 85-95 ft/lbs. It is important to remember to evenly torque the lug nuts in a star pattern in stages. If you try to tighten the lug nuts out of sequence or apply the full torque rating before you tighten any other lug nuts the wheel will more than likely be uneven on the hub face causing vibration issues. Follow the torque sequence in the picture but do them...

  • Do Trailer Wheel and Tires Need to be Balanced
Trailer wheel and tires don't really need to be balanced. Some people go ahead and still do it but the benefits are hard to notice and since trailers suspension is pretty harsh the weights typically end up bouncing off. I wouldn't mess with it honestly. I'd just mount the # AM30859 to your trailer and you'd be good!

  • Should Trailer Tires be Inflated to Max PSI Figure
Yes, with trailer tires you do need to always keep the tire inflated to it's max PSI rating to ensure you get the full weight capacity of it and minimize heat build up which might cause premature failure. So to ensure you get the full weight capacity of the # AM30859 you'd need to inflate it to 105 PSI when cold.
