Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Beveled Stud Holes

Beveled Stud Holes Front and Back

The stud holes on this steel wheel are beveled to ensure that the wheel stays tight against your trailer hub. This also eliminates the need to constantly retorque the lug nuts.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

After purchasing, and installation of the 2 Kenda 5.30-12 Tire W/12 White Wheels, 2 perfect fits, for my 1998 Tracker Trail Star boat trailer.I purchased these tires for my boat trailer because the tires on the trailer had small cracks due to the sun exposure. The boat is 16’2’’, and has a combined weight of about 1,380 lbs. The tires were very easy to mount, the ride while traveling on the interstate to the lake was smooth, and the handling on the boat trailer felt well secure at a high speed of 70mph. Overall I am very pleased with these tires. I also purchased two tire cover to put over the new tires, to preserve them from this Hot Atlanta, GA. sun.

Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 Bias tire,LR C, with White Rim: Tires arrived in excellent boxes, on time. I was excited to see the tires were in good shape upon arrival. I cleaned them up, applied 303 on the whole rim and tire. An excellent choice of tire for my fishing trlr. These tire are a high speed tire, wider than the 4.80 tire and will wear very good in the desert heat. I ordered 3 tires, I won't have to worry about a flat for years to come. This is my second time I purchased tires from e-trailer, they have a vast line of products with good prices ,thanks e-trailer, I will return again.

by:

These tires work as expected and are a great fit for my 2000# GVWR utility trailer.

by:

These arrived earlier than I expected and it was great. They arrived in a box in great condition. I am using them on my Harbor Freight utility trailer and they are a good match for the old ones.

by:

A little disappointed in the quality. Rim not completely painted

Huh, that quality does not look good at all. Let me get you over to our customer service department for them to look into a replacement for you.

by:

This is the fourth tire of this brand and style I've purchased. I'm not sure what mileage i've gotten with them but they look nice and have not given me any problems

by:

Needed both new tires and wheels. These came already mounted, and slightly pressurized. Was told that balancing was not needed. Easily put on trailer and drove nice. No problems noted.
Ordering was easy. Questions were quickly answered by customer service. Shipping was quick. Good company!

Have had tires and wheels on for one year. Holding pressure and rolling fine. No problems.

by:

I have had use of one of the two tires I purchased at the same time since then and it is working perfectly. The rim is a little rusty but solid otherwise. It was worth the price as I shopped around for several days for them and the best price with shipping. Thank you!

Excellent. Has been in use over a year. Bought with rim. Durable for my 5x8 trailer and loads over 1,599 lbs at times.

by:

I trailer my boat on gravel roads in northern Minnesota to my favorite fishing lakes. After one year of usage these tires are still holding up to the difficult terrain. In the past with other tire brands, I would typically have to start plugging holes in the tires or replace them by mid-summer but I haven’t had any issues with these yet.

So, after one year, I’m very pleased with these after previously trying trailer tires from at least three other tire manufacturers.

by:

Product seems to be good. trailer had the same tires from 2007 on it when I got it and were still holding air but in bad shape due to age. Rims are nice and the old ones are still in good shape.

by:

The Kenda Loadstar 5.30-12 wheel & tires were an upgrade (from 4.80-12, load range B) for my Zieman 3-motorcycle trailer. They came ready to be installed and bolted right up! Also, etrailer.com was easy to order from and provided delivery tracking.

by:

Delivery was fast and the tire rim was exactley what I needed. After a year the tires and rims have held up as expected

by:

Perfect fit Came a day early too

by:

I must say, etrailer has the Best website and service I have ever had online. Even though I had chosen 1 incorrect tire of 2 different types, they helped me to get the wrong tire returned and quickly arranged for the right one to come. I am amazed by this kind of good service in a day when it's very rare. Much Thanks to Shery T. and George J. and the whole etrailer team. We Islanders would say in our local Hawaiian pidgin language---"etrailer.com is-- Da Best!" Aloha and Mahalo from your #1 customer here in Honolulu Hawaii.

I needed new tires for my 13 yr old 5'x8' utility trailer. ETrailer had the right product (for some reason 5.30-12s are not that common in my area) and a good price which created the highest value from the various sources I found on the web and locally.

I was very pleasantly surprised how well everything came packed.

Very good experience.

by:

  • Where to Find a Tire's Required PSI Pressure Rating
Your trailer tire will have a lot of information noted on its outer sidewall. This will be molded into the rubber. Some of this information will be fairly small and may require wiping down the tire to remove any dirt in order to see it. The type of information noted on a trailer tire includes the tire size, for example 5.30-12 as with yours; its weight Load Rating; correct cold PSI tire pressure and sometimes a speed rating letter code. The tire's correct pressure will be noted somewhere...

  • Do 4.80-12 and 5.30-12 Trailer Tires fit the Same Size Rim
Yes, the 4.80-12 tire size and the 5.30-12 tire size both fit a 12 inch diameter wheel that is 4 inch wide. So the part # AM30660 with a 4.80-12 tire would have the same rim as the # AM30820. Both these rims have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern.

If you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern you would want the # AM30780, if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern you would want the # AM30820. I attached review videos for both wheel and tires.

  • Replacement Pontoon Trailer Bunk Brackets to Provide Increased Clearance Between Boat and Ground
Since your clearance issue is not so much with your trailer as with your pontoon boat's skegs, the better solution is to install taller bunk brackets to lift the height of the boat on the trailer, rather than lifting the trailer higher off the ground. Keep in mind that a tire would have to be 3-inches taller overall to give you 1-1/2-inches more height. A tire that much larger would probably create a new problem with fender or wheel well clearance. The linked page displays all bunk brackets...

  • Trailer Tire Recommendation for a Boat Trailer with 5.30-12 Tires and Towing at Highway Speeds
All of the ST (Special Trailer) tires that we carry are DOT (Department of Transportation) rated for 65 miles per hour unless stated otherwise on the tire. It is not recommended to run a trailer tire at a higher speed than 65 miles per hour due to the heat buildup that will occur inside the tire and cause the tire to break down and cause the tire to fail. All trailer tires are constructed with thicker sidewall dimensions for handling weight and are designed to be used at 65 miles per hour...

If your Shorelandr boat trailer has a 5 lug wheel, it'll have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern but if you wish you can measure it. This is really simple to do, just measure the distance between two adjacent wheel studs, center to center. If the distance is 2-5/8 inches, then you've confirmed it's a 5 on 4-1/2.
