Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

2012 Volvo S60

Great customer service. Great follow up. However, this does not fit a 2012 Volvo S60, whatever eTrailer says. To get the back bumper panel on the car required significant “coaxing” of the bumper bar. The coaxing involved ratchet straps, mallets, a massive steel Indian club. All to say that without bending the impact bar a bit, the bumper panel did not fit.

I’d recommend getting anything other than this trailer hitch if you have a 2012 Volvo S60 as the effort to get it on was not worth it.

Bought this as a gift for my daughter's 2017 V60 Cross Country. Ordered it last week, here on Monday. Delivery was excellent!

The instructions were thorough. The paper work included the original manufacturing traveler with the QA control marks. Love this!

It helped that I backed the car up on a ramps. It involved less bending and more visibility to the underside of the rear of the vehicle. The clearance to remove the screws in the wheel well was tight. I put a photo of the 1/4" ratchet with the T-25 bit.

Putting in the spacers in the bumper/hitch stackup required some thought and balancing. I started with the bottom two bolts, finger-threaded. That left enough play in the upper four bolts to bring it together.

Cutting the bumper for hitch clearance caused me the most anxiety. It's my daughter's baby and I didn't want to mess this up. I used a rotary tool and a utility knife for trimming and it came out fine. I cut a little less than the instructions said at first, just because you can't put back what you cut away. In the end, the fit was perfect.

The total project took about three hours, including supper. I'm very happy with the product and the on-line help available to finish this job. Let's see what my daughter thinks tomorrow... (grin).

2014 Volvo XC70

Went in fairly easy. I did it alone. The only part where two people might be needed is installation. The hitch is heavy, the bumper rail that fits over it is not. So you are trying to align the holes in both with the threaded holes, and it is bit tricky. The packing was very good for shipping. The insructions say to use the included washers and bolts only for installations with the raised areas, but I assessed the length of the bolts and chose to use them and the washers. In particular, the tow hook mount is thick, and at least in those two locations I would use the longer bolts regardless. My hitch has about a 1/8" offset from the tube with the receiver to the rest of the hitch - a manufacturing anomaly. Otherwise the fit and finish are perfect. One video shows prying the bumper cover end from the wheel trim, but mine was like the video where the advice is just pull straight out. I had no problem the bumper cover latches - just pull each side end straight out, and work your way along each tailight, pulling outward. I have parking sensora, so I used plastic sawhorses to support the cover while dealing with the connector. It is a bit stubborn. There is a 1/4" wide area with two ridges - which the the "tab" that you press in to release the latch. Take your time it will come apart. The threads of the mounting bolts are suprisingly finicky to get started, which would be another reason two people might make installation easier.

2013 Volvo XC70

Installed on a 2013 Volvo XC70. Used the video installation video found on webpage of product to install the hitch as well as going over the instructions.

Product arrived undamaged in proper secure shipping box. Came with bolts washers and spacers. The spacers were not mentioned in the video install guide, the paper instructions explain them, but it would be more helpful if the install video addressed them. I figured out I did not need them on my model (I hope), after reading the instructions.

Removal of bumper: My bumper had lights/wiring connected. I could not for the life of me disconnect the wiring, so it just moved it to the side and set it up on supports to not cause tension on wiring that connects bumper lights. Was able to install hitch without issue.

Instructions were a little confusing on location to cut out of under bumper for hitch clearance. My cut was a little wide on one side, tried to show in picture looking up at hitch.

Having the correct tools will greatly help. I actually had to cut a portion of my torx screwdriver handle, so I could remove one of the torx screws holding on the wheel fender well. It was that or remove the tire. A small or angled torx screwdriver would be best.

Overall a easy install for a novice. Took me less than 3 hrs. Having a 2nd set of hands helps when it comes to lifting the hitch and bumper piece up and starting a couple bolts. I installed this by myself.

Information in the online "catalog" provided complete info needed to make a decision. Hitch and accompanying wiring harness were received promptly, along with easy-to-follow instructions for installation. Entire installation - hitch and trailer light wiring - was completed in under 2 hours. No glitches. This is the 2nd time I have used etrailer.com. They have their program down pat, from timely acknowledgement of the order, to shipping, to quality products.

2008 Volvo V70

Just picked up my 2008 Volvo V70 from my mechanic who installed the trailer hitch & it looks great! Everything is concealed except the receiver & I couldn't be happier with it! Even my mechanic was impressed with it! I purchased it along with a Thule bike rack so that I could take my bike with me on an upcoming trip. The ordering process was easy & I talked to a live person so that any questions I had were answered. The hitch, locking pin & bike rack arrived very quickly. Would highly recommend ordering from etrailer!

The product came quickly and was packaged well to avoid damage. I was surprised how strong it was. Installation was pretty easy, I wouldn’t say a 10 in difficulty like the website. More like a 6. I was concerned it wouldn’t fit my car which is a special model called R Design, but it fit perfectly. The most difficult part was getting both sides of the bumper to align, the spacers push out the bumper pretty far so the cover is a very tight fit., think wife trying to fit into wedding dress 15 years later tight. The bottom I wasn’t able to put screws back in so I just used zip ties. I may take a grinder to trim Back the spacers a 1/4 inch to better fit without zip ties. I would very much recommend. It looks good and is well hidden. Installation hints: put tape on the rear fender to avoid scratching while putting bumper back on. Also do a search of online videos to see how to remove Bumper cover, that easily saved me 40 minutes.

Installed on a 2008 Volvo XC70

This
really couldn't have been any more straight forward to install. I hit a snag with a stripped bolt in a hard to reach place (13mm bolt connecting to the tow hook assembly on the right side), but once I resolved that issue by moving some additional components out of the way, it was smooth sailing. You don't need any specialized tools, and I was able to do the job from start to finish with T20 and T25 torques bits, and 10mm and 13mm socket wrenches. Took about 1.5 hours by myself.

TIP: A floor jack makes an excellent set of extra hands for holding the hitch in place when bolting it in by yourself!

etrailers has a great set of installation videos [online] that were extremely easy to follow. I used this one for my 2008 Volvo xc70.

2016 Volvo XC70

I installed this today on a 2016 XC70. The video really spells it all out extremely well. I would add a couple of points to watch out for.
1) the 10mm nuts under the bumper fascia are plastic. Mine were finger tight. When you reattach them, use a wrench and not a power driver or you risk stripping and splitting the plastic.
2) I have parking sensors and corner marker lights in the bumper fascia. You’ll need to disconnect that as you remove the fascia. Have a helper hold up the fascia while you do this, or support the fascia on a box or something else.
3) I did the job solo, with the car on the ground. The step where you lift the hitch and the bumper onto the car and attach it is probably best done with a helper. However, I was able to support the hitch on a step stool at the correct height to attach the bolts into the car.

Next up, doing the wiring. I use this hitch to attach a Yakima 4-bike rack with the Lampost lighting device (this is no longer available from Yakima).

2016 Volvo V60

The hitch was easy to install on our 2016 Volvo V60 and took about an hour and a half. A couple things that will help make the install easier. Have something to lay your bumper on. After you remove the screws and connectors at the top of bumper shroud be prepare to pull hard starting at the wheel wells and the cover should come free easily. When putting it back I suggest you start at the top near the car entry and work down to the wheel wells it willl be easier to get things aligned for the screws in the wheel well. Make sure you have all the right tools. We had to make a slight cut in both our muffler heat shield and shroud underneath the bumper where the hitch will hang. Not hard to cut just take your time and make sure the cuts are aligned. It saved us over $400-$500 doing ourselves and purchasing the hitch on etrailer.

I'd like to register a complaint. Typically, for car projects in the garage, I like to allocate an entire afternoon with just me, my tools, and plenty of pilsner beers to complete the task.
This install was so straightforward and easy, thanks to the instructions and online videos, that I completed the project in only 2.5 pilsners. This allowed me too much time to work on my wife's assigned projects for the rest of the afternoon.
But seriously... This a real-deal, top quality product. I've towed lots of stuff with it with no problems. And it's not obtrusive-looking on the car. Good stuff. Highly recommend!

I should have bought from etrailer sooner!! I’ve been reluctant to add a receiver hitch to my Volvo wagon due to aesthetics. I’ve always had one on my Ford trucks - but hey this is my kinda sporty grocery getter wagon. Well I’m getting older and would prefer a bike rack below shoulder level. That lead me to want a receiver hitch and my daughter’s fiancé used etrailer to find a hitch, so he sent me a link to the web site. Options, prices, videos were over the top and I ordered one on my first visit. It arrived today and I’m completely satisfied with design and workmanship. Here’s a photo of the install without the bumper cover reinstalled. Couldn’t have done it without the videos. Once the bumper cover is back on I won’t even notice the addition.

Ford Transit Connect

This is the fourth different hitch that I have purchased from etrailer.com, and once again... a smooth and easy installation.

From start to finish, etrailer.com does it right. The Draw-Tite hitch and all components were packaged safely and carefully. No damage in transit.

The instructions were thorough, and the online videos helped to clarify the details.

The finished project is quite satisfactory. This do-it-yourself kit looks like a professional, factory installation!

2016 Volvo V60

I installed this receiver hitch on a 2016 Volvo V60 Cross Country T5. I watched the instructional videos and made my installation take no time at all. I only reverted to the written instructions for the amount of torque required on the bolts. I was skeptical about cutting the trim to fit the hitch but I think it looks very professional and at the right heath for my bike carrier. Thank you.

by:

The hitch came quickly and fit perfectl y.

by:

Hitch fit like a hand in a glove. Well finished, speedy delivery, with appropriate hardware which I didn't need. Video implied easy, straight forward bumper cover removal, but was the most difficult to execute, Volvo's to blame for that one.

Finished product is of sight except for the receiver.

2016 Volvo V60

I think the estimate of 2 hours to install is a good one. In fact, most of the issues I had was while trying to get the body panels back on. One tip I would make is that you have a vinyl siding tool handy. I had one and it made it easier to pop the panels back on.
Regarding the hitch, it was a piece of cake. Instructions were clear (watched the video online first) and components are excellent. I am very pleased with the installation and finish. I think my friends and relatives are now lining up to have me help them.

Great hitch and super easy to install on Volvo XC70. Start to finish the install was a two hour job for one person...only one step requires two people. The install video was super informative and easy to follow.

2016 Volvo XC70

I'm sure the design and build of this product are excellent. But the packaging and shipping leaves much to be desired. The hitch came rattling around a large box, breaking through the sides, crushing the other products inside, and chipping the paint

The hitch and wiring from etrailer are holding up very well. I towed a 5 x 8 U-haul cargo trailer about a thousand miles with zero issues. The finish is holding up including in the spots where I touched up the factory paint job

When I read it was a 10 of 10 for difficulty I was a bit worried. This install was a breeze. My 15 year old helped me and we were done in just over an hour. On the S60 we did not even need to cut the bumper cover. Cannot even tell it's installed unless you are looking for it.

2015 Volvo XC70

As advertised, easy install. Nice to have 2 people for bumper removal and install to make sure you don't scratch any paint on the sides. Only issue I had was outer ring on 2" trailer hitch entry area was welded a little off center. Needed to file entry area to get hitch to insert. Have used the hitch several times. Would give a rating of 5 stars if I wouldn't have had the file issue.

by:

very easy to install, was able to connect to an unused port of power in the rear fuse box.

  • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2014 Volvo S60
For your 2014 Volvo S60 the Draw Tite hitch part # 75916 would work well for carrying a bike rack. It's the exact same hitch as the Hidden Hitch you referenced as they are made by the same company. This hitch has a 2 inch opening though so it will require rack to have the same size shank. Most likely the adapter you mentioned would not be available so it would be time for a new bike rack. The most popular bike rack we carry that has been confirmed to fit this vehicle is the Thule Camber...

For your 2018 Volvo V60 I recommend the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75916. This hitch offers a 2 inch receiver compatible with the majority of bike racks and other accessories. Since you are using this hitch for a bike carrier you will want to make sure the bike rack clears the back bumper. When installed the distance form the center of the hitch pin to the back of the bumper for this hitch is 6 inches so you will want to make sure you select a bike carrier with a distance...

The Curt # C56386 also carries over from the 2015 to the 2016 model, so it will fit your vehicle regardless of whether or not it's considered a 2015 or a 2016 model. I've confirmed this with Curt.

For your 2015 Volvo XC70 I would recommend the Curt # 13266 over the Draw-Tite # 75916. These trailer hitches have an almost identical design. Although the Draw-Tite has a higher towing capacity, it looks like both of the hitches exceed the towing capacity of your vehicle so you will be limited by your vehicle. I would double check the owner's manual to make sure. Both have a concealed cross tube, so you will only see the receiver tube at the back of the vehicle giving it a factory look....

The Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness # C56224 will give you a 4-way flat connector. If your trailer requires a 5-way we do have the Adapter # C57187 you will be able to add...

  • Recommended Trailer Hitch for 2013 Volvo S60
For your 2013 Volvo S60 I actually recommend just going with the Draw-Tite Class III 2" Trailer Hitch Receiver # 75916. This 2 inch hitch essentially has an identical mounting bracket design to the Curt 1-1/4" Hitch # C12066 you referenced, so it's not going to stick out any further. In fact based on installations we have performed with both hitches the Draw-Tite will likely be a bit more recessed behind the bumper than the smaller Curt model. A 2" receiver is going to open up the door...

  • Is Install of Draw Tite Hitch 75916 The Same on AWD 2015 Volvo V60 as FWD Model
We checked with Draw Tite and the install of the # 75916 would be the exact same on a FWD model of a 2015 Volvo V60 as it would be on an AWD model. The install video I attached a link to would cover the entire process.

The Draw-Tite Hitch # 75916 is rated for 4,000 lbs towing/400 lbs tongue while your 2013 Volvo XC70 is rated for about 3,300 lbs towing/330 lbs tongue from what I could find online (you will want to verify this in your copy of the owner's manual). • Hitch and Bike Rack Recommendation for 2016 Volvo V60
The first thing you'd need to install a hitch bike rack on your 2016 Volvo V60 will be a hitch like the Draw Tite part # 75916 that fits your V60, has plenty of capacity, and is mostly hidden. Then for a bike rack I really like the Hollywood Racks Trail Rider part # HR200Z as it's very well made and stable, is easy to load, and costs less than similar bike racks that rival it's quality.

  • Does a Higher Rated Trailer Hitch Receiver Increase the Towing Capacity of My Vehicle
Unfortunately, you need to go by the lowest rated component which in most cases, including yours, is the vehicle. Hitch manufacturers often make their hitches rated higher than the vehicles they're designed to fit. Just like with the Draw-Tite # 75916 that fits yours 2015 Volvo XC70. Adding a higher rated hitch (Or anything else) doesn't increase the capacity because the vehicle is still only able to handle the weight it's rated for.
