Quick Tip: There's really not a whole lot to getting new drum brakes. If you've confirmed that all of the specs listed above line up with what you need for your trailer, you can be pretty sure these will work for you.

Ready to Roll When You Are

If you're looking to customize your off-road trailer or pop-up camper, these brakes can be a great way to do that.

a greyscale diagram shows how a manual parking brake cable is installed on the back of an electric parking brake assembly

Installing these brakes is easy, and using them is even easier. Run the linkage cable from your tongue-mounted handbrake (not included) to the lever on the backing plate of the assembly as shown above. Then, just pull on the handbrake any time you need a little reassurance that your valuable cargo won't roll away from you.

How to Manually Adjust Trailer Brakes

The more miles you put on your trailer, the more your brake pads will wear down. As they lose contact with the drum, stopping distances get longer and longer. To keep your brakes working great, it's important to adjust them pretty routinely. For this job, grab a floor jack and either a brake adjustment tool (sold separately) or just a standard flathead screwdriver.

Jack up your trailer enough to get the wheel(s) off the ground. Remove the adjuster plugs from the backing plate on the brake, and insert the flat end of the tool through the back of the assembly.

Screenshot from an instruction video shows how to manually adjust the the alignment on a drum brake

Push in on the star gear and lift it up. Keep doing this until the brake pads catch on your drum. When you can't spin your wheel by hand anymore, back the gear off by about 10 clicks by pushing down on the star gear. Does the wheel now spin freely (even if it sounds like the brake pads drag slightly on the drum)? Great! Then you're all done with that one and ready to adjust the rest.

How to Break In New Brakes

After you get these brakes installed and adjusted, you'll need to break them in. First, find a long stretch of road or a big, empty parking lot. Once you're there, set your brake controller to its maximum setting and get moving. Speed up to about 40 mph and brake to slow to about 20 mph. Repeat this 15-30 times. The goal is to get the brake shoes and magnet properly seated into your drum. You'll know you've done that when it feels less jerky (and more consistent) each time you apply the brakes.

Note: The brakes will be very hot after doing this, so after every 10 stops you'll want to wait about 10 minutes to let the brakes cool off before continuing. If you don't, you might cook and crack the pad material.

Ashley was outstanding. Knew what I needed even if I didn't. Bolt on replacement. Have not completed the install, but so far everything is perfect. Only thing that would be cool would be a cable regulator so we could attach the parking brake. I will manage.

by:

fter a long day of improvising we managed to get the parking brake kit operational with the Dexter electric assemblies. Not ideal by any means but in a rush to ship the trailer overseas this is the best we can do with the limited time today.

To connect the cable to the external arm of the break asy we used an off-the-shelf split bolt an nut designed for electrical grounding. It became necessary to enlarge the mounting hole in the arm to 3/8". This was quite difficult and had to be done on a drill press as the mechsnical arm is made from hardended steel.

Nonetheless this gave us a mechanical connection between the dead end of cable and the mechanical arm.
(The black paint on the arm was boiled off during the process of drilling due to high heat generated drilling thru the hardened steel. )

The angled mounting point of the cable did not fit great into the 90 degree bracket of the brake asy but it actually engaged enough to lock into place well enough to operate ok.

Otherwise, not pretty installation but functional and we believe it will satisfy Brazilian DOT regulations which require a mechanical parking brake with separate control than the electric tow and breakaway brake actuator.

Still quite disappointing and puzzlibg Dexter offers this electric brake asy with mechanical parking break mechanism but does not offer a cable kit designed to interface and operate with it. Seems crazy to have such a part designed but no cable & hardware kit for it.

For you 5,200 lbs axles you can use the Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 12" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 5.2K to 7K # AKEBRK-7-SA. • When Do I Replace The Brake Assemblies On My 2013 Heartland Bighorn 3010RE
Hello William. The Dexter 6K brake assemblies will come from the factory with a 3/16" thick brake shoe. Dexter recommends replacing them at 1/16" thick. So, you may not necessarily need to replace them now, but if not now, you will soon. If you want to replace the shoes only, I would need you to confirm exactly what brakes you have now. basically I just need to know if they are self-adjust or manual adjust. If there is a sticker or model number on the backing plate I should be able to cross...
